POST OR PILE DRIVING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,974, dated October 15, 1889.

Be it known that we, MARTIN L. MOWERs and GEORGE W. MOWERS, citizens of the United States, residing at Lucas, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post or Pile Driving Machines; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in post or pile driving machines; and the leading object of our invention is the provision of a machine which will drive posts or piles on uneven as well as even surfaces in a perfect manner.
A further object is the provision of a machine which is compact and may be readily and easily transported from place to place.
A further object is the production of a machine which will possess merit in point of simplicity, durability, and inexpensiveness of construction, and which will be thoroughly efficient for the purposes intended.
To attain the desired objects, the invention consists of a post or pile driving machine having improved means for adjusting the driving mechanism with relation to the surface in which the post is to be driven; further, of a driving mechanism adjustable on a suitable running-gear and adapted to be readily transported on said running-gear.
The invention consists, finally, of the novel construction, combination, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, substantially as illustrated, described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

Referring by numerals to the drawings, in which similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in said figures, the numeral 1 designates the running-gear on which the mechanism is mounted, the running-gear being of the common and well-known construction. On the bolsters 'of the runninggear is mounted a frame consisting of the end sections 2 and side connecting-rails 3. To one of the end sections is connected one end of a bar or link 4., and the other end of said link is connected to a lever 5, by means of which the frame may be shifted or adjusted laterally on the running-gear. In the end sections 2 of the frame are secured standards or uprights 6, to which are pivoted the crossbars 7 of the rectangular frame 8. In the front ends of said frame 8 are secured the lower ends of the derrick 9, in which the block or weight 10 slides.
Depending from the bolsters of the runninggear are yokes 11, having openings 12, which receive the ends of a shaft 13, and thus form the bearings for said shaft. On the shaft 13 is secured a gear-wheel 14., with which meshes a worm 15 on a shaft 16, having its bearings in the yoke 17, surrounding the gear-wheel 14, and in the ear or lug 18, secured to one of the side rails 3. The shaft 13 is connected with the rectangular frame 8 by means of chains 19, and it will thus be seen that by rotating the shaft 13 the rectangular frame will be tilted, the purpose of which is to bring the frame level should the running-gear be on uneven surface.
' Mounted on the frame 8 is a suitable motor 20, which imparts motion to the band 21, which passes over the pulley 22 on shaft 23, which is mounted in the frame 8. On said shaft'23 is a gearwvheel 24-, meshing with a gear-wheel 25 on the shaft 26, also mounted in frame 8. 011 said shaft 26 is mounted a drum or spool 27, adapted to be shifted or slid on the shaft 26 through the medium of the shifting lever 28, engaging a collar 29 on the drum, and the drum is formed with teeth 30, adapted to form a clutch with the teeth 31 on the shaft -26. From this construction it will be seen that the drum may be caused to revolve with the shaft, or may revolve separate therefrom, the purpose of which will appear.
Passing around the drum is a rope or chain 32, having one end connected to the weight 10, which rides on grooves in the derrick. Connected at their upper ends to the derrick are inclined rods or bars 33, the lower ends whereof are connected to a cross-bar 34, se-
cured to sprocket-chains 35, traveling over sprocket-wheels 36, carried by shafts 37, one of which shafts is provided with a crank for moving the chains. The cross-bar 34 is guided in its movements by means of the strips or cleats 38, secured to the frame 8. From this construction it will be seen that the derrick is capable of being tilted to accommodate it to uneven surfaces, as by moving the cross-bar 3a the bars 33 are moved, and consequently the derrick inclined to different angles.
The operation of the machine will be readily understood from theforegoing description, taken in connection with the drawings.
When it is desired to drive a post or pile on even ground, the mechanism remains in its normal position. The motor operates the drum to elevate the weight to the desired height, and when the height is attained the drum is shifted out of contact with the teeth on the shaft 26, and the same revolves in the reverse direction and the weight falls upon the post, driving it into the ground.
When necessary to drive a post on an uneven surface, the rectangular f ram e is brought into a horizontal position by the mechanism described, and the post may be readily and quickly driven. The mechanism may also be adjusted laterally as well as inclined to accommodate the mechanism to the desired purpose. Q
The great advantages and features of merit of the machine will be readily seen and appreciated by all skilled in the art, and are calculated to recommend the machine as a desirable and practical one'for the purposes intended.
Having thus fully described the invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a post or'pile driving machine, the combination, with the running-gear, of the frame mounted thereon, the tilting frame pivoted to said frame, the chains connected to the pivoted frame, and the shaft for drawing the chains and tilting the pivoted frame, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a post or pile driving machine, the combination of the running gear, the yokes depending therefrom, the shaft mounted in said yokes, the gear-wheel and worm for rotating said shaft, the frame mounted on the runninggear, the frame pivoted in said frame, and the chains connecting the pivoted frame with the shaft, substantially as and for the purpose described. In a post or pile driving machine, the combination of the frame, the frame pivoted in said frame, the chains and shaft for tilting the pivoted frame, the derrick pivoted in the pivoted frame, the inclined bars connected to said derrick, the cross-bar connected to the inclined bars, and the sprocket chains and wheels for moving said cross-bar, substan- 7o tially, as and for the purpose described.
4:. In a post or pile driving machine, the combination of the tilting frame, the motor mounted thereon, the band driven by said motor, the shaft rotated by said band, the shaft rotated'by said shaft, the drum on the latter shaft, the clutch on the drum and shaft, the lever engaging the drum for shifting the same, the rope or chain passing around the drum, the weight connected to said rope, and the derrick for guiding said weight, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
