AIR-BRAKE-SETTING APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 13, 1909.
Application filed August 21, 1908. Serial No. 449,661.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT GALE and Doc M. LILLEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Bonham, in the county of Fannin, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Brake-Setting Appliances; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in air-brake setting appliances, and it has forits principal object the provision of an exceedingly simple, inexpensive, and eflicent apparatus arranged for connection in such a manner with the stern of an airdischarge valve with which the train-pipe is provided that the actuation of the apparatus will be effected automatically when one of the trucks of the car becomes derailed. With this end in View, the appliance, briefly described, comprises a rock-shaft located beneath the floor of the car and j ournaled in brackets secured thereto, a pair of depending stirrups fastened to the bent ends of the shaft and arranged to embrace the axles of the truck, and a lateral arm carried by the shaft and connected through a retractilc coil-spring with the valve stem.
The referred embodiment of the invention is i lustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by the same reference characters throughout the views thereof.
Of the said drawings, Figure 1 is a fraginental side elevation of a box-car equipped with the improved brake-setting appliance. Fig. 2 is an enlarged pers ective view of the appliance,oas well as of t 10 connections between the latter and the valve stem.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates generally the car, and 2 the frame of one of the trucks carried thereby. 3 indicates in like manner, the train pipe, and 4, the axles of the truck wheels 5. he pipe 3 is provided with a brake-valve (:3 of any ordinary type, the valve body (not shown) being connected with an operating lever 7.
The brake setting appliance which forms the subject of this invention consists primarily of a rock shaft 8 journaled in depending brackets 9, secured to the floor of the car,and operating connections between said shaft and the valve lever, these connections being hereinafter fully described. he ends of the rock shaft are bent laterally in the same direction, as indicated by the numeral 10, and each bent end is formed with a series of perforations in which is interchangeably fitted a split pin 11, which is likewise arranged to pass through the perforations formed in the bent upper end of a depending stirrup 12, said stirrups being adapted to embrace the axles 4. T he inner arm of each stirrup has a length considerably in excess of that of the other arm, and it is the free end of this longer arm that is bent upon itself and is formed with the perforations through which the split pin 11 passes, each of said bent cnds straddling the corresponding bent end of the rock shaft.
Adjacent one end, the rock shaft has socurcd thereto, a collar 13, upon which is formed an upwarllly-extcnding lateral arm 14, whose free end has a perforation formed therein. This arm is connected by a split pin 15 with a U-shapcd clip 16, the legsof which are perforated as shown, to permit the adjustable connection of the clip and said arm. The big-ht portion of the clip has socurcd thereto an eye-bolt 17 to which is fastened the lower end of a retractilc coil spring 18, whose upper end is connected by a link 19 with the valve lever 7.
Owing to this construction, and to the particular arrangement of the various parts of the appliance, as above described, it will be apparent that when either pair of wheels leaves the track, the frame of the truck will also drop, carrying with it, the stirrups 12. This downward movement of the stirrups will effect the rocking of the shaft 8, owing to their connection with the bent ends 10 thereof. The actuation of the rock shaft, in turn, will cause the arm .14 to swing downward, thus rocking the valve lever and opening up communication from the train pipe to the atmosphere, the air under compression in the pipe being thus free to escape and set the brakes throughout the train.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination, with a car truck and its wheels, of a brake-valve and its stem; a rock-shaft located above the truck and provided with a lateral arm; connections between said arm and the valve stem, said connections including means for normally holding said stem in position to close the valve;
and a depending actuating member secured to each end of the rock-shaft, said members being arranged to engage the axles of the truck Wheels.
2. The combination, With a brake-valve and its stem, of a rock-shaft provided with a lateral arm; connections between said arm and the valve stem, said connections including means for normally holding said stem in position to close the valve; and a depending stirrup secured to each end of the l'OClQ-Sllitfb.
3. The combination, with a brake-valve and its stem, of a 1'oel;sl1aft provided intermediate its ends with a lateral arm, and having its ends bent laterally in the same direcl tion; connections between said arm and f the valve stem, said connections including means for normally holding said stem in posiltion to close the valve; and a depending g stirrup secured to each enn of the rock-shaft. I In testimony whereof, We ELIlilX our signa l tures in presence of two Witnesses. l ALBERT GALE.
