My iiivention is an improvement in air "brake attachments, and has for its object to provide mechanism for use in; connection with railway carsforautomatically controllingthe' air: brakes to'cause the same to be applied when atruck is derailed.

The presentembodiment of the invention, -is shown in connection with the truck 1,of

said nipples having a common axis, and the said bore is tapered and is adapted to receive a valve 6, shaped to fit the casing and having a transverse port 7 which normally registers with the nipples 4:. The valve is also provided with a second transverse port 8 and this port has an exhaust outlet 9 communicating with the atmosphere.
The valve has at the outer end thereof a perforated ear 10, and this ear is connected with the controlling mechanism to be described. The said mechanism comprises a lever 11 which is pivotally mounted on the car by means of a rod 13. This lever is arranged with one end adjacent to the valve 6, and the other end is pivotally connected to the bolster of the truck by means of a Specification of Letters Patent.

shown more particularly in Figs. 3 and 4.
The lever is provided witlia cross head 16 near the valve and intermediate the ends ofthe lever, and the cross head is connected to the earlO of the valve by a pair of links 17. These links 17 are pivoted to the ear at one end of the links and to the ends of the cross head at the other. The links are longitudinally slotted as shown at 18, and the rivets 19 which connect the cross head to the links pass through the slots.
It will be evident from the, description, that so long as the parts are in normal position on the rails, there will be no movement of the valve, because the slots 18 perniit a limited movement of the lever 11 with respect to the valve to compensate for inequalities and curvaturesin the track, and
" the head 15 of the lever will prevent accr dental displacement of the valve from jar or jolting. Should, however, the wheels leave the rails, as shown in Fig. 2, the displacement of the truck willswing the lever 11 and will cause the valve tobe moved from the positionshown in Fig. 5 to that shown in Fig. 6, bringing the exhaust port 8 into register with the train pipe 2 and the brakes will be set, stopping the train at the earliest possible moment.
n will be noticed that the link 14 is con- I nected to the bolster with a lost motion connection, the lever being slotted at the bolster for engagement by the pin which connects it to the bolster. This connection provides for lost motion in transit.
I claim:
1. The combination with a railway car and a train pipe, of a valve casing interposed in the length of the said pipe, said casing having a tapering port transverse to the pipe, a valve in the casing having a said connection in the casing having a port normally regns tering with the train pipe an having a second port communicating with the atmosphere and adapted to register with the train pipe when the'valve is moved longitudinally, and a connection between the said valve and the truck for moving the valve when the truck is displaced with respect to the pipe beyond a predetermined distance,
said connection comprising a'lever pivoted to the car, said lever having a head engaging the valve when the parts are in normal posi tion to hold the valve closed, the lever having a cross head intermediate its ends, a connection between the end of the lever remotefrom the valve and the truck, links connecting the valve with the end of the cross head and having a lost motion connectlon wlth the same.
3. The combination with a railway'car and a train pipe, of a valve casing interposed in the length of the said pipe, said casing having a tapering port transverse to the pipe, a valve in the casingghaving a port normallv registering with the train pipe and vhaving a second port communieating with the atmosphere and adapted to register with pipe when the valve in the casing having a port normally registering with the train pipe and having a second port communicating with the atmosphere and adapted to register with the train pipe when the valve is moved longitudinally, and a connection between the said valve and the truck for moving the valve when the truck is displaced with respect to the pipe beyond a predetermined distance.
5. The combination with a railway car and a train pipe, of a valve casing interposed in the length of the said pipe, a valve in the casing having a port normally registering with the train pipe and having a second port communicating with the atinosphere and adapted to register with the train pipe when the valve is moved longitudinally, a connection between the said valve and the truck for moving the valve when the truck is displaced with respect to the pipe beyond a predetermined distance, said connection comprising a pivoted lever connected at one end to the truck and engaging at the other the valve to normally hold the valve closed, and a cross head on the lever'having a lostmotion connection FLOWERS.
