VAPOR-TORCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 13, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. lt rLrnrn OnAUssi, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Long Island City, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vapor- Torches, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to vapor torches, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class designed for use as a paint burner, as a heater for soldering irons and other articles, and for various other purposes; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which;
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved vapor torch with part of the construction in section, the burner proper being shown in full lines in one position and in dotted lines in another position, said figure showing also in dotted lines a support for a soldering iron or other article to be heated; Fig. 2 a section on the line 22 of Fig. l Fig. 3 a longitudinal vertical section of the body portion of the burner; Fig. 4 a section on the line 44 of Fig. 3; and, Fig. 5 a perspective view of a device for holding soldering irons or other articles to be heated and adapted to be con nected with the body of the torch or the reservoir thereof.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a can a of the usual form and construction, said can being provided at one side with an air pump a which is in communication therewith at the bottom thereof by a pi e a controlled by a valve a these parts eing also of the usual construction. The can a is also provided in one side of the top a thereof with a valve inlet l) to permit of the discharge of air therefrom when desired and, in the practice of my invention, the top of the can is provided with a threaded opening a, in which is screwed one member 0 of a coupling 0 provided with a circular head 0 the other member 0 of said coupling being !provided with a similar circular head 0".
Formed in the adiacent surfaces of the circular heads 0 and c is a circular passage and the coupling member 0 is provided with a port 0 which communicates with said passage and with the interior of the can a, and the coupling member 0 is provided with a port 0 which communicates with the circular passage 0 and with a tubular end portion 0 of the coupling 0 The heads 0 and c of the coupling membersc and o are connected by a bolt (Z in such manner that said coupling members are free to turn one upon the other, and in the operat on of the device hereinafter described, the coupling member 0 is rotatable on the coupling member 0 Connected with the end 0 of the coupling member 0 is a pipe ewhich is formed into a coil 6 provided with a tubular extension 6 with which the burner body f is connected.
The burner body f is roughly oblong and cylindrical in form as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3, and consists of a top portion f and bottom portion f said parts being hinged together at one side as shown at f and adapted to be secured together at the opposite side by means of cars f formed on said part, and a screw or bolt f passed therethrough or in any other desired manner.
The burner body f when connected with the coil 6 is in line with the axis thereof, and said burner body is provided with a longitudinal opening g, the top and bottom walls of which, at a predetermined distance from the end thereof opposite the coil, converge as shown at g and g to form inwardly directed members between which is a narrow passage 9". This construction forms a burner chamber 9 in the end of the body of the burner adjacent to the coil 6 and a supplemental chamber 9 in the opposite end thereof. The opposite side walls of the narrow passage 9 are provided with air inlets port 9 which are preferably oblong in form, and preferably formed in the adjacent faces of the top and bottom portions f and f of the body portion of the burner, and in the chamber 9 is placed a vertically arranged nozzle device h, which is secured in the bottom wall of said chamber and which communicates with a passage h? formed in the bottom part f of the body portion of the burner and with which the extension 6 of the coil 0 communicates, and the nozzle device it is provided with a discharge port h in the axial line of the body portion of the burner. As thus constructed, it will be seen that the burner chamber g", which also serves as a mixing chamber, is cylindrical in form except at the end thereof opposite the coil e where the walls thereof converge as described. In practice, the vapor from the nozzle device it and air through the ports or passages g and 9* are admitted to the apex of said chamber, and this construction facilitates the heating of the body portion f of the burner. It will be understood, of course, that the flame from the body portion f of the burner is discharged through and upon the coil '6 and the petroleum or other hydro-carbon liquid placed in the can a is highly vaporized before it enters the burner head or the body portion f of the burner.
In practice, the pump a is operated to supply a requisite amount of pressure in the can a, and this pressure forces the petroleum or other liquid up through the coupling 0 and through the coil 6 where it is vaporized in the usual manner and as hereinbefore described.
I also secure to one side of the can a a vertically arranged keeper 7', adapted to receive a rod 4?, and to be held therein and adjusted therein by means of a set screw i and the end of which, as shown in the drawing, is provided with a loop or ring t and this device may be used as a support for a soldering iron or any other article which it may be desired to heat and, in practice, the top portion 01'' of the rod i may be of any desired form or shape.
By means of the coupling 0 it will be seen that the burner comprising the body portion or burner head f and the coil 6 may be held in a variety of positions, as for instance, in a horizontal position as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, or in a partially upright position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and this is the position in which the burner is held when it is desired to heat an article supported thereover.
My improved torch may be used for any of the purposes for which devices of this class are intended, and various changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made, Within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a vapor torch, a burner, comprising a body portion having a longitudinal chamber extending therethrough, a coil connected with said burner and supported in line with one end thereof, the top and bottom walls of said chamber being contracted near the end thereof opposite the coil, the side walls of said chamber being provided with air inlets between the contracted top and bottom walls, and a nozzle device in the end portion of said chamber opposite said coil and in communication with said coil and adapted to discharge vapor centrally and longitudinally of the body portion of said burner and in the direction of said coil.
2. In a vapor torch, a burner, comprising a body portion having a longitudinal chamber extending therethrough, a coil connected with said burner and supported in line with one end thereof, the top and bottom walls of said chamber being contracted near the end thereof opposite the coil, the side walls of said chamber being provided with air inlets between the contracted top and bottom walls, and a nozzle device in the end portion of said chamber opposite said coil and in communication with said coil and adapted to discharge vapor centrally and longitudinally of the body portion of said burner and in the direction of said coil, said burner body being also divided longitudinally into two parts hinged together at one side.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 21st day of January 1908. l
WILFRID CHAUSSE.
