Improvement in Binders, of which the fol-Y lowing is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to looseleaf binders; and my primary object is to provide an improved construction of binder adapted for use as a transfer binder, or for analogous purposes, and having improved means for locking the clamping-bar of the upper, or movable, cover to the binding-posts of the binder.
The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 represents a broken plan view of a transfer binder constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a broken sectional view taken, as indicated,` at line 2 of Fig. 1 and showing the binder in a locked condition; Fig. 3, a similar sectional view showing the upper clamping-bar shown in- Fig: 2, with a locking-device in the nonlocking position; Fig. 4, a broken sectional view taken, as indicated, at line 4 of Fig. 1;
and Fig. 5, a perspective view of a releasingdevice employed.
` In' the construction illustrated, A, A1 represent the upper and lower covers-of a loose-leaf hinder, having attached thereto, respectively, tubular clamping members A2, A3; At, binding-posts rigidly connected with the lower clamping-member A3 and extending through perforations Awith which the upper clamping-member isprovided near its ende; and A", locking-devices connected with the i upper clamping-member A2 and* coacting .with the binding-posts A4. The-covers ma be constructed in any desirable manner. Ordinarily they comprise boards 1` (cardboard or Wood) joined by iexible connectiene 2 to the-tubular clamping-bars. The

The slots Q are bounded by' upwardly-converging Walls 10, as shown in Fig. 3, and the inclination of the bores 8 is rearwardly and upwardly, as shown in Fig. 4. The bores 7 serve as runways for gravity-lock balls 11 adapted to project throughthe slots 9 and englage the binding-posts A?. In the lower wa s of the plugs 7 are cut longitudinal slots 12 which serve to receivethe wedgeportions of sli-des 13 adapted to` move beneath the balls 11 and release them from .engagement with the posts A4.Y Each slide 13 preferably comprises a horizontally-.disposed shank passing through a slot 15 in theupper portion of the corresponding plug 4; a thumbpiece 16 connected with the outer end of .said shank; .a downwardly-turned offset 17 located inside the plug 4; and a horizontal stem 1S which rests on the bottom wall of the tubular-member A2 and extends into'the slot 12, where itis equipped at its upper edge with awedge 19 having beveled surfaces 20, 21 and a'ilattened apex aiiording a horizontal surface 22. The slide 13 normally occupies the position shown `in Fig. 2', in which position the wedge 19 is located at the inner side of or beyond the ball 11. This corresponds with the locking position, the ball 11, in this position, being in locking Vengagement with the binding-posts A4. In

From the. foregoing description it Will be understood that whenthe slides 13 are in the position shown in Figs. l and 2, the balls 12 are ermitted to drop to the lower ends of the bores 8 and protrude somewhat through .the slots 9 into the post-receiving perforations A5 of the' upper clamping-member, Where they loclringly engage the bindingosts extending through said perforations Af. en the slides are moved outwardly, the Wedges serve to elevate the balls l1 in .the manner illustrated. in Fig. 3, thereby releasing the balls from locking engagement with the binding-posts, and ermitting the upper clamping-member to e raised With relation to the binding-posts.
In assembling the parts, the plugs 7 are slipped into the tubular-meniber'A2 after the balls have been ent7ered in the bores 8. The slides are then entered, the beveled surfaces21 enabling the Wedges to pass beneath the balls; the plugs '7 are then riveted in position and the end-plugs@ are then forced 4into position and secured in a desirable manner.
From the illustrations and descriptions given it Will ybe at once appreciated that my improved construction provides an exceedingly simple and effective loclringdevice, and that the resulting binder construction is neat in appearance and handy in operation. The parts vof the locking-devices are all housed Within the upper tubular clamping- .member A2, except the small protruding binding-post and a clampin -member having a perforation receiving sai post, of a locking-device comprislng a gravit -lock member en aging said post, and a s de having a -bevele surface adapted to ride beneath said gravity -look member and elfect release thereof from binding engagement with said post.
