To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID PELToN MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ReversibleCover-Fastening Devices for Baskets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to improvements in reversible cover fastening devices for baskets, the main object of my invention being the provision of a fastening device for basket covers, which will permit of any class of basket being transferred into a covered basket or what is more commonly known as a hamper. At the present time, it is the custom to make two classes of these articles, that is baskets and hampers, and this necessitates the carrying in stock of these bulky or rather space-occupying hampers, thus making the storage alone a big item; and it has therefore been my object to provide a cover fastening device, which is quickly secured in place upon baskets to convert them into hampers, thus necessitating carrying in stock only baskets and covers. My fastening device is also designed to lit in the hand-hole portions of baskets, and more particularly what is known as rock elm or split baskets, and conceal the hand hole so that when the cover is in position, it is impossible to tamper with the contents through said hand-holes.

To clearly illustrate my invention, attention is invited to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the end of a rock elm or split wood basket with my fastening and cover in place. Fig. 2 is a section through the upper edge of the basket and cover with my fastening device in place. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the exterior plate. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the interior plate. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a basket with my fastening device in locked position. Fig. 6 is a modified form of fastening carrying a hinged portion for the cover. Fig. 7 is the other member of this fastening. Fig. 8 is a section through the basket with the member of Fig. 6 in position. Fig. 9 is a similar view with the member shown in Fig. 7 in position.

Referring to the drawings :the numeral 1 designates the split wood or rock elm basket, which is provided with the upper rim 2 and with the hand-hole 3, one at each end, so that the outer member of the rim forms a portion of the grip for lifting the basket.

My fastening device, consists. primarily of the inner plate or member 4, J. hose shoulder 5 fits beneath the interior portion 6 of the rim 2, so that its apron 7, fits over and conceals the hand-hole from the inside, the exterior plate or member 8, having its shoulder 9, fitting beneath the exterior portion 10 of the rim 2, so that its concealing apron 11, covers and conceals the hand-l1 ole from the outside. In order that these two plates may be held securely in place and prevented from any lateral movement, I employ the two bolts 12, which pass through the openings 13 of the plate or member 4, having their heads 14 seated in the plate 4 when assembled, the threaded ends of the bolts entering the threaded openings 15 in the outer plate 8, these bolts clamping the plates tightly upon the rim 2, and over the hand-hole. In order to insure the device against any movement whatsoever, small screws 16, are passed through either one of the plates 4 or 8, or both so as to engage the rim 2. The outer plate 8 is provided v. ith the tv o eyed lugs 17, for the reception of the metal handle 18, and with the projection 19, carrying the journal or bearing 20, for the reception of the hooked stud 21 of the cover carrying casting 22, or for the pivotal locking member 23, of the opposite casting for the cover, this construction being similar to the fastening device shown in the Bartlett patent #775,960, November 29, 1904.

In Figs. 6, 7', 8 and 9, I have shown a modified form of fastening device, but in all cases, it is my object to conceal and close the handhole opening of the basket. In this instance the construction of the plates varies, the one for one hand-hole being slightly different from the other, so that when the cover is once attached to one side it is not necessary receiving lug 38.

to entirely remove the cover from the basket to reverse it. The member shown in Figs. 6 and 8, consists of the concealing plate 24, which is provided with the substantially rectangular projection or block 25, which enters and fits snugly within the hand-hole of the basket, the pivoted clamping plate 26 being secured upon the inner face of the block 25, so that after the block is wedged within the hand-hole, the plate may be turned and engage the basket above and below the handh'ole and thus hold the plate in position, the screws 26 being employed to hold the clamp in locked position. Formed integral with the plate 24 is the upwardly projecting centrally arranged lug or boss 27, which is hingedly connected to the lugs 28, which carries the sleeve 29, the hinge allowing the sleeve to be moved to assume the position shown in full and dotted lines Fig. 8. Journaled in the sleeve so as to be rotated when desired to reverse the cover 30, is the headed pin or stud 31, which is carried by the plate 32, which carries said cover. The member, which coacts with the above member in holding the cover in the desired place, and which is clearly shown in Figs. 7 and 9, comprises the plate 33, which fits upon the interior of the basket, and has its rectangular projection of block 34, enter the hand-hole from the inside of the basket. Upon the outer face of the block 34, are provided the lugs 36, for the reeeption of the handle 37, and the pad-lock Formed integral with the plate 33 and extending upwardly therefrom is the lug 39, carrying the sleeve 40, which is adapted to aline with the sleeve 29 of the other fastening, and has the headed pin or stud 41 j ournaled therein. This stud is carried by the other cover carrying casting 42. In order that the plate 33 and its parts may be held securely in the hand-hole and the cover locked in position, I provide the hinged hasp 43, which is carried by the sleeve 40, and is adapted to fit over the pad-lock receiving lug 3S, and be held thereon by a pad-lock. From this construction, it will be seen that the members shown in Figs. 6 and 8, always remain in the same relative position, while the members sh own in Figs. 7 and 9, are carried by the cover, and that to open the basket, the pad-lock is removed, the hasp disengaged from its h1g7, and the plate 33 removed from engagement with the basket by pressing against the outer edge of the cover above the handle-opening and pulling upon the rim 2, the rim and the portion of the basket surrounding the handle-opening, being flexible enough to allow the projection or extension 39 to then be shoved through the handleopening upon the inside of the basket. In combination v ith a basket having hand-holes at opposite ends, and a cover for the basket, of a cover attaching or fastening device adapted to be secured to the basket so as to cover the hand-holes to prevent access to t he basket through said hand-holes, means for pivotally securing the cover to said fastening devices, and handles carried by said devices.

2. In combination with a basket having an upper rim and hand-holes at opposite ends near the rim, and a cover for the basket, of a cover attaching or fastening device adapted to be secured to the basket so as to close the hand-hole to prevent access to the basket from the exterior, and means -whereby the cover is pivotally secured to said fastening device.

3. In'combination with a basket having an upper rim and hand-holes at opposite ends near the rim, and a cover for the basket, of a cover attaching device, each member of which comprises an inner and outer plate adapted to fit over the hand-hole upon the interior and exterior of the basket, means passing through the hand-hole to secure the plates to the basket and rim, said plates covering and concealing the hand-hole, and means whereby the cover is pivotally secured to each member. 7

In combination with a basket having hand-holes at opposite ends, and a cover for the basket, of a cover attaching or fastening device adapted to be secured to the basket from within through said hand-holes, means for pivotally securing the cover to said fastening devices, and handles carried by said devices.

5. In combination with a basket having an upper rim and hand-holes at opposite ends near the rim, and a cover for the basket, of a cover attaching or fastening device adapted to be secured to the basket from within so as to close the hand-holes to prevent access to the basket from without, and means whereby the cover is pivotally secured to said device.

6. In combination with a basket having an upper rim and hand-holes at opposite ends near the rim, and a cover for the basket, of a cover attaching or fastening device adapted to be secured to the basket from within so as to close the hand-holes to prevent access to the basket from without, and co acting means carried by the cover adapted to engage said member carried by the basket.
