AUTOMATIC FIRE-ALARM BOX.

To all whom it may concern.'
.Be it known that l, Hiram ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haddon'lield, in the county of Camden and State of N ew Jersey, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Fire-Alarm Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in automatic iire alarm boXes, such as are operated by electrical connection with a thermal circuit closer of the general type shown in my application for patent, Serial Number 415,948, and which ave electrical connection with a central station for sounding a gong thereat a number of times corresponding to the number of the thermal circuit closer station.
Reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts througl'icut the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation with a section of the casing removed, Eig. 2 is an elevation of the opposite side, a section of the casing being removed, Eig. 3 is a top plan view partly in section, with the cover removed and illustrating the wiring of the various cir-4 cuits, and Fig. d is a vertical section taken ver 1S thereof will contact with the finger 17 I of the lever arm i.) thereby raising the lever on the line Lil-4 of Eig. 3 and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Reference numeral 1 designates the casing provided at one end with binding or terminal posts 2, 3 and 4, and at the other end with posts 5 and 6, or casing are switches A and B.
Reference letter C .indicates the thermal circuit closer, or in fact, any circuit closer circuit at G, that the wheel 1Q stops before adapted to act automatically in case of iire, and D and E indicato two sets of batteries, two cells to the set.
The battery set l) is connected at one end with the thermal circuit closer andthe binding post 3 and through wire 3 with one terminal ofthe motor M'. The other ond of the battery set D connects with the binding post 6 from which wire 6 leads to the said switch B At opposite ends of the box y l l l l l l l i l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l i l and from thence through wire 6 to the bindf ing post 5. Awire 5 connects the said post 5 with the lower adjustable contact screw 7 of an automatic clrcult-brealrer G. The upper adjustable contact screw S of the circuit-g breaker G is carried by the free end of a lever arm 9 pivoted at 10 to a block 11 insulated by element 12 from the metal frame 13, The
said screw 1 is mounted in a bracket 14 together with an extension 1.5, and the said parts 7, 1,4 and 15 are insulated from each other as illustrated. To the free end of the lever arm' 9 and to the said extension 'is connected a coil springl le for holding the lever arm normally depressed, The lever arm t) is provided with a can]v linger 17 insulated therefrom. and which is adapted to be enn gaged b y a loose cam lever lSto lift the said arm 9 upon every revolution of the wheel 19, the movement of the ioose lever 18 being .limited by stops 20 provided on the wheel 19. The aforementioned circuit from battery set l) is completed to the other terminal or motor M through wire 11 connected with the said block 11. .Pivoted in a block 21't insulated from the casing 13 is a pawl 22 provided with a ledge 28 and this pawl is normally pressed into the path of the movement of lever '9 by a spring 2d, as illustrated in lf ig. 3. The screws 7 and 8 normally contact as in sig. 2 to complete the motor circuit with battery set D in event thermal circuit closer C becomes closed. 1n. case of fire, this circuit closer will become closed and the motor M will thereby be caused to operate and through suitable gearing, to he descrilfed, will cause the wheel 1Q to rotate. Upon one complete revolution of the said wheel 19, the loose learm 9 and breaking the electrical circuit at (if, causing the motor M and consequently the wheel 19 to stop. While the lever arm 9 is in this raised position, the pawl 22 will be sustained on the ledge 23 of the pawl until the device is reset. lt will be noted that when the motor El stops, due to breaking of the loosel level' 1S passes or trips the 'linger 17. .llesetting consists in restoring thermal circuit closer C to normalV open position, manually lifting lever arm 9 and moving loose lever 18 from beneath finger 17 as in l' ig. 2, and in forcing the pawl 22 to position out of path of arm E) to permit the said arm 9 when released. to fall under tension of spring 1.6 to close the automatic circuit breaker G. The casing 1, as illustrated in Fig. 5, is provided with an opening 22 closed by wicket 22, to permit access to interior of the box.
The gearing, aforementioned, for operating the wheel 19 consists of a shaft 25 on which said wheel 19 is mounted, and. on this shaft 25 is a large gear 26 meshing with smaller ya motor, an alarm mechanism involving two ,l able contact gear 27 on shaft 28. A large gear 29 is also l secured to the shaft 23 and is operated by a l small gear 30 on shaft 31 to which latter is l secured a large gear 32 operated by worm 33 on the motor shaft 34. The shafts 25, 28 and y31 are journaled in the metal 'frame 13.
Secured to the outer end of the shai't 2S is a counting wheel 35, and attention is here directed to the fact that this counting wheel, owing to the gears 26 and 27, turns several times around to the single rotation of the wheel 19, to enable the alarm to be sounded a number of times before the trip lever 13 of the wheel 19 raises the lever arm 9'to break the motor circuit at G.
rllhe batteryT set E, (see Fig. 3) is in circuit with the binding post 4 and the other end is in circuit with a gong F or other alarm and with the binding vpost 2. The binding post 2 is in electrical connection through wire 2 with the lower adjustable contact screw 36 of the closer H, (see Fig. 1). rfhe binding post 4 is connected by wire 4 with the switch A from which the circuit is completed by wire 4 with the bracket 37 insulated -from the metal frame 13. Journaled in this bracket by means of a pin 38 are two arms 39 and 40 constructed to move together, the arm 4'0 being insulated by collar 41 from the other parts and out of circuit, and the arm 39 ,being in circuit with the bracket 37 and carrying the upper adjustable contact screw 42. These contact screws 36 and 42 are normally drawn toward each other by coil spring 43 attached at one end to the insulated bracket 44 of the upper contact screw land at the other end to the bracket 45 of the lower stationary contact screw 36, which latter is mounted in and insulated from a bracket 46 of the metal 'frame 13, but also insulated from the same.
During the rotation o'f the wheel 19 as previously described, the counting wheel 35 will rotate a number oi' times, as desired or rather as geared, and as the end of the arm 4() falls into the notches 35 of said wheel 35, the arm I 39 will be lowered thereby causing the contact screw 42 thereof to engage the contact screw 36 of circuit closer H to close the gong circuit and sound the gong F a number ol' times corresponding` to the number of notches l in the counting wheel 35. V
To test the box, open switch A and then close switch B, and letthe box run until the motor circuit is broken at G, which will take about two minutes, then lift lever arm 9, pull loose lever 18 in wheel 19 forward or to position illustrated in Fig. 2, push pawl 22 ack, which closes circuit breaker, then turn switch B off and switch A on and boX is ready for work.
Having, fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device of the character described,
contact members, means operated by the motor during operation of the alarm mechanism for moving one of said contact members from engagement with the other to break the motor circuit, and means for positively locking said contact member in said disengaged position.
2. ln a device of the character described, a motor, an alarm mechanism involving two contact members, means operated by the motor during operation of the alarm mechanism for moving one of said vcontact members from engagement with the other to break the motor circuit, and a pawl for automatically locking said contact member in said disengaged position.
3. In a device of the character described, a motor, a circuit breaker comprising two contact members, means continuously movable by and during operation of the motor for operating one of the contact members, said means being capable of independent movement.
4. ln a device of the character described, a motor, a circuit breaker involving a movable contact member, normally rotatable means operated by the motor for operating said contact member, said means being capable of independent movement in the direction of its travelafter operation of said contact member.
5. ln a device of the character described, a motor, a circuit breaker involving two contact members, means continuously movable by and during operati-on of the motor and being adapted to engage one of the contact members to disengage it from the other, said means being capable of being moved out of engagement with the first contact member independently of the motor, and means for positively engaging and locking said first contact member in disengaged position.
6. In a device of the character described, a motor, a motor circuit breaker involving a movable contact arm, a shaft rotatable by -means of said motor, a cam member continuously movable with the shaft for movin the contact arm into cut-out position, sai cam member being capable of independent movement on the shaft.
7. In a device of the character described, a motor, a circuit breaker involving a movable contact member, a shaft rotatable by means of said motor, an arm loosely mounted on. the shaft and being capable of independent concentric movement, means carried by the shaft for causing said arm to move therewith to move said contact member to open position, and automatic means for engaging said member to hold the same in open position after independent movement of said arm.
