citizen of the United States, residing at Clark, in the county of Clark and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful Rent-Collecting Means f or Telephone Service, of which the following is a specification.

The primary object of the present invention is to provide novel. simple and effective mechanism for maintaining by the aid of a check or coin, an operative connection he 1-5 tween the telephone instrument and the central station, and furthermore to employ mechanism controlled from such central station, 1' or effecting the discharge of the checks or coins from the said means, and thereby until another check or coin has been intro duced.

The short circuit of the telephone instrument is thus again com leted, and the instrument cannot be use until another check or coin is do ted. This is of importance, 5 inasmuch as it permits the placing of a series of the controlling devices on a single line, and each one will be nutomaticallv stopped as i soon as the coin has dropped mm the coin engaging means. The employment of a toothed wheel 27 with a selector 33 is impor- 5 taut, for in case of electrical disturbances, the magnet 38 may be energized, but the gmoremcnt ol' the motor will be comparatively small and not sul'licicnt to permit the g wheel 27 to make a complete rotation, and thus effect the operation of the latch. An inumber of deep notches may therefore be employed so as to make it improbable that & the motor will be operated a sullicicnt numher of times to ellect an unauthorized release of the controlling check or coin within a predetermined pcriod of time. One of the particular advantages of the mechanism as n 5 whole is that it can be installed with any system and instruments now in use without ,altcring or disturbing said instruments or svstem as it merely constitutes menus for short circuiting the lines, and thus cutting uui, euiui iuaiuuncnie.
It will of course be understood that the controllin devices may be located at any point, an the short circuit-lug connections etl'ected in ant desired manner. Preferably, however, each mechanism is located in close proximity to the telephone instrument, where it can be conveniently su lied with checks or coins on inspected wit outdiflicult The spring motor is rcwound in the ordiuarv manner by a key, this rewinding being made at certain periods by the inspector or collector.
From the foregoing, it is thoughtthat the f construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, with out further description, and it will be under- 5 stood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of const-mct-ion, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what- I claim new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. In mechanism of the character described, the combinationwith circuit controlmeans, of a movable check holder constituting an actuating device for the circuit controllin means, a. latch for maintaining the check older-in a redetermined position, a. motor for moving t latch, holding means for the motor, and mechan'mm for releasing the holding means to permit the movement of the motor.
2. In mechanism of the character de- III) scribed, the combinationwith circuit controlling means, of a swinging check holder constituting an actuating device for the circuit controlling means, a latch for holding the check holder against swinging movement, a motor for operating the latch, holding'means for the motor, and a magneticallyeo eratd detent device for operating the olding means. l
3. In mechanism of the character del scribed, the combination with circuit controlling means, including a swinging contact element, of a check holding device mounted on the swinging contact element, a swinging latch engaging the contact element for holding the same and the checkholdingdevice against swinging movement, a motor, a rotary device operated by the motor and engaging the latch to swim the same, a detentl'or the motor, and an e ectro-magnet engaging the detent to operate the same and release the motor. 4.
