To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WILLIAM A. Down- ING and JAMES T. Moi-Tues, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ticket-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to ticket holders, and the object of our invention is, to provide a novel holder adapted to facilitate the sale and delivery of tickets printed upon a continuous slip of paper and wound upon a reel or like central support.

Our invention aims to provide a novel cabinet for housing rolls of tickets, the tickets of each roll representing different denominations. The tickets are so arranged and means provided that the ticket slip of each roll can be drawn by hand to expedite the delivery in detaching any desired number of tickets from a slip, thus obviating the necessity of singly detaching tickets, as is the present practice. In this connection, we have devised a ticket holder particularly designed for parks, nickelodeons, theaters, and places of amusement where a large number of tickets are delivered, each being provided with a prescribed date or number whereby the tickets delivered one day cannot be fraudulently used another day. To this end, we have devised an improvement upon our ticket holder granted January 14th, 1908, 876,866, said patent disclosing a ticket holder having a novel guide for facilitating the delivery of tickets.

The present invention comprehends first, a novel printing device for dating and numbering the tickets as they are drawn forth through the guides; second, a novel antifriction roller in connection with the guides; and third, a money drawer in connection with the cabinet employed for housing the rolls or slips of tickets.

Our invention as briefly stated above will hereinafter be more specifically described and the features of novelty defined in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our ticket holder, illustrating the lid or cover plate thereof and the money drawer in an open position, Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly broken away and partly in section,

illustrating the key primarily employed for feeding tickets into the guides of our holder, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the printing device, illustrating the inking roll or pad thereof, Fig. e is a plan of a portion of our holder illustrating the inking de vice, with the cover plate thereof removed, Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view of the same, Fig. 6 is an elevation of the printing device, and Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view of a type roll used in. connection with our holder.

In the accompanying drawings, 1 and 2 designate boxes with the box 2 serving as a cover for the box 1. The box 2 is provided with a hinged cover 3 having a transparent plate 4, said cover 3 and the box 2 being retained in closed positions by clasps or fastening devices 5 of a conventional form, carried by the front walls of the boxes. The front wall of the box 1 is provided with a handle 6 by means of which the box may be conveniently carried.

The boxes 1 and 2 are provided with central, vertical revoluble reels 7 constituting axial supports for ticket strips 8 and 9 wound in the form of rolls. The front right hand corners of the boxes 1 and 2 are provided with vertical slots 10 and with sheet metal guides 11 and 12, these guides extending rearwardly along the sides of the boxes 1 and 2 to the rear edge thereof. The guides are preferably formed from single pieces of thin sheet metal bent into substantially U- shape in cross section and have their rear ends projected upwardly to provide arms 13 for severing the tickets. The exposed side of each guide is provided with graduations bearing numerals, the distance between the lines of graduations being equal to the length of the tickets printed on the strip.

The construction described above is fully disclosed in our Patent 876,866, and reference will now be had to the improvements upon our ticket holder. The first improvement comprises a printing device located in the front right hand corner of each one of the boxes 1 and 2, and as the printing device of each box is identical, we deem it only necessary to describe one of said devices and for the same reason have only illustrated one device. The front right hand corner of the box 2 is provided with a triangular casing let, and the hypotenuse side of the casing is provided with an opening 15 and an inwardly lprojecting deflector 16. The front angular corner of the casing 14 is provided with an opening 17 and with another inwardly projecting deflector 18. The front end 19 of the guide 11 protrudes into the slot 10 and joins the right angular sides of the casing 14, whereby the strip of tickets 8 guided into the casing 14 will readily enter the guide 11.

In the casing 14 is detachably secured by screws 20 a bearing 21 for a vertical revoluble inking roll or pad, said inking roll or pad comprising a perforated tube 22 normally closed by a threaded cap 23. The tube 22 is adapted to contain ink or printing fluid, which passes through the perforations 24 of the tube and escapes through felt or padding 25 surrounding said tube.

The bottom of the casing 14 is provided with an irregularly shaped opening 26 serving as a socket for a plate 27, which in turn serves as a base for a vertical revoluble type roll 28 and feed rolls 29. These rolls are rev olubly mounted upon the base plate 27 and are retained in position by a top plate 30 connected to the base plate 27 by posts 31. The top plate 30 is connected to the posts 31 by screws 32, whereby said top plate can be easily removed when it is necessary to disassemble the elements of the printing device.

The type roll 28 is provided with a longitudinal groove 33 for type 34, said type being retained within the groove 33 by a follower 35 and a screw 36, said screw being mounted in the lower end of the roll 28, and easy access had to the same by cutting away the base plate 27, as at 37. The type 34 can be easily changed from day to day to date the tickets as they pass through the casing 14, and with each rotation of the roll 28, the type 34 are adapted to contact with the inking roll and obtain therefrom suficient ink to permit of a ticket being distinctly marked or dated. The vertical feed rolls 29 are provided with coverings or'sleeves 38 of resilient material, as rubber, and these rolls are adapted to contact, as best shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. In order that the rolls can oper ate in unison with the type roll 28, the spindle 39 of one of the feed rolls is provided with a gear wheel 40 meshing with a gear wheel 41 mounted upon the spindle 42 of the type roll 28, said gear wheel's being retained upon said spindles by nuts The gear wheels can be either mounted upon rectangular portions of the spindles or contracted portions thereof so that the gear wheels can be frictionally held by the nuts 43 for rotation with said spindle. Since the type 34 contacts with the inking roll, said roll will be intermittently moved by the movement of the type contacting with said roll, consequently the periphery of the inking roll will be equally worn. The lower ends of the rolls 28 and 29 are firmly retained in position by the base plate 27 engaging in the opening or socket 26-, while the upper ends of the rolls are held by the edges of the top plate 30 contacting with the inner sides of the casing 14, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings; Covering the rolls within the easing 14 is a plate 44 adapted to fit upon the casing, said plate being retained thereon by arms 45 pivotally mounted in sockets 46 pro vided therefor upon the hypotenuse side of the casing 14.

The plate 44 is provided with openings 47 to clear the nuts 43, and in connection with these nuts, we use a key 48 ada ted to fit upon either of said nuts. This rey is employed for primarily rotating the rolls of the inking device for starting a strip of tickets through the device.

Our second improvement comprises antifriction rollers 49 which are journaled in the front ends 19 of the guides 11 and 12, these rollers preventing the strips of tickets 8 and 9 from binding in the guides.

The third improvement consists in providing the box 1 with a money drawer 50 having compartments 51 formed therein, said drawer being provided with a conventional form of lock 52.

It is thought that the utility and operation of the improvements constructed as thus described will be readily understood.

If a purchaser desires five tickets, the ticket seller grasps the strip at the point opposite to Fig. 5 and pulls the strip to clear the outer edge of the arm 13, when the five tickets thus drawn are severed and delivered to the buyer in a connected form. If less than five tickets are called for, the ticket is grasped at the point opposite the number corresponding to the number of tickets required, the strip is pulled and the tickets severed therefrom in the manner above described. As the tickets pass through the printing device, each ticket will be dated, whereby a ticket sold one day cannot be used upon another day.

\Vhile in the drawings forming a part of this application there is illustrated a preferable form of construction embodying the invention, it is to be understood that the elements may be varied or changed, as to the sha e, proportion and exact manner of assem lage without departing from the spirit of the invention. 7

Having now described our invention what we claim as new, is

1. A ticket holder and printer, embodying boxes arranged one upon the other with the upper box serving as a lid for the lower box, 7

with the boxopenings, said triangularcas mgs also having inwardly-extending ticket deflectors at opposite sides thereof, and a printing device located in each triangular casing.

2. A ticket holder and printer, embodying boxes arranged one upon the other with the upper box serving as a lid for the lower box, a hinged cover carried by the upper box, reels centrally-disposed Within said boxes, guides of U-shape in cross section communicating at one end With openings in said boxes and extending along one side of said boxes, a printing device located in each box contiguous to the opening thereof, each printing device comprising a triangular casing having openings formed therein, deflectors carried by the side Walls of the casing adjacent said openings, a type roll journaled in said casing and adapted to be operated in unison with said feed rolls, and an inking roll j ournaled in said casing.

3. A ticket holder and printer, comprising in combination With a box having a ticket discharge opening, and a ticket holding roller j ournaled in the box, of a casing arranged in the box having a ticket outlet opening communicating With the discharge opening in the box, said casing also having a ticket inlet opening, top and bottom plates mounted in said casing, a pair of feed rollers and a type roller journaled in said plates, a bearing carried by the casing, an inking roller journaled in said bearing, and ticket deflectors carried by the casing at opposite sides of the feed rollers.

In a ticket printer, the combination with a ticket supporting box, of a casing arranged in the box having a ticket outlet opening, said casing also having a ticket inlet opening, top and bottom plates mounted in said casing, a pair of feed rollers and a type roller journaled in said plates, a bearing carried by the casing, an inking roller journaled in said bearing, and ticket deflectors carried by the casing at opposite sides of the feed rollers.

5. In a ticket printer, a substantially triangular casing having a ticket inlet opening at one side and a ticket outlet opening at one corner, top and bottom plates mounted in said casing, a pair of feed rollers and a type roller j ournaled in said plates, a bearing car ried by the casing, an inking roller journaled in said bearing, and ticket deflectors carried by the casing adjacent said ticket inlet and ticket outlet openings.
