IMPROVEMENT IN BRACKET-CLAMP.
The Scheduleeferred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Mbo-
VTo all 'whom it may concern will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formingpart of this specification, iu which- Figure l is a side View of our improved clamp, and
Figure 2 shows the same in use. Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. This inventionconsists in certain improvement in shingling-clamp, whereby a more secure and convenient device is Obtained, as hereinafter explained. A In the accompanyingI drawings, A A are a pair of jaws, which are pivoted together at B, in the usual manner. v
Instead of giving the lower jaw a hooked shape, as heretofore, we make it of a wedge-shape, and project it out beyond the upperjaw, as shown by a, fig. 1, and
-give the upper side of this jaw a serrated surface; and
by this construction 'the lower jaw is pushed under the end of' the shingle, and inserted at once, without having to previously raise the end of the shingle.
On the heel of the lower part, A, we provide a series fof teeth, c, which also bites in the-next shingle below,
as shown in fig. 2, and by adding to the holding-power of the clamp, makes it moresecure in itsposition.
We also employ a earn-lever, D,Vin place of the ordinary screw-bolt, for' spreading the rear parts of the jaws, by which the jaws are operated more expeditiously than ordinarily.
The lever D occupies a slot or recess in the upper part, A, in such manner that it is retained by thervet B; and as the parts are made of malleable cast-iron, and the only fitting in its manufacture is the riveting of the parts together at B, itis cheaply constructed.
By'the'se means we obtain a clamp of greater holding-power, and which is` also Operated-with the greatest facility.
We'do not claim a pair Of clamping-jaws, for seizing the end of the shingles, as shown in patent, No. 52,757 but t What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The jaws A A, hinged at B, the lower jaw being serrated and wedge-shaped at one extremity, and projectiug beyond Vthe upper jaw, in combination with the cam-lever D all constructed, arranged, and Operated in the manner and for the purpose'set forth.
The above specification Of our invention signed by fus, this 22d day of May, 1868.
