Description

ititrd tutr zatemt @Willlb '1- LE ROY SIINOUR AND H.` L. TRAPHGAN, OF EATON, OITIIO;
'P-RAPHAGAN ASSIGrNS IEIIS BIG I I'I' TO SAID SENOIIR.
Letters Patent No. 91,674,11eted June 22, 1869'.
IIIDIIPRO'VN'IEIV'I' IIN FAS'I'IIN'IN'G'- i'OG-EI'EEER. THE SOIIIES .AND "D'PPERS OI' -BOO'I'S AN'ID SHOES.
The Schedule referred to n these Letters Patent and making part ot' the same.
To all 'IDILOm 13t mag; concern 'Be it known that we, F. LE BOY SEIEIOU'IE: and H.
IJ. TRAPIIAGrN, of' Eaton, in the county of Preble, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and. improved Mode of Fastening the Upper Leather and Soles of Boots and Shoes Together, and Half-Soling the Same; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. 4
Specelfications. 4 First. No. I, in the drawing, represents the inside sole of the boot or shoe.
Second. No. 11 represents the metallic clamp. The clamp is made of Varioils metals, tin, lead, steel, malleahle iron, or hrass. The dots marked (L are screwholes. The projecting points Of the clamp, marked b, are used to aid in adjusting and securing the upper leather, and for levelling the space between the clamp.
Third. No. III represents the outside, or bottom sole of the boot or Shoe, and the dotted points, marked o, screw-holes.
Fourth. No. IV represents the heel of the boot or shoe, and the dotted points, serew-holes.
Fifth. In constrneting a boot or Shoe, we place the sole No. I on the last, bring the upper leather over sole No. I. We theo lay the clamp No. II on sole No. I, and .draw the upper leather to thepoints of the clamp, marked b,-then secure the clamp With a-,few
s'crews. Then we 'lay on the clamp the outside or hottom s'ole or soles, and fasten by serews passing through No. III and No. II, and into No. I.`
The heel No. IV is fasteriecl to its place with screws.
In the construction of some qualities of shoes, we use simply the serews. In others, we use a clamp preoisely similar to No. II, except it is constructed without the projections marked b, and is placed on the inside of sole No. 1, 'and the screws pass through No. III and No. I, and into the clamp No. II.'
We are aware of the fact that boots and shoes have been made with serews, entering through awoodeu sole into a wooden bottom, and coniining the upper between said sole and bottom. We therefore disclairn the application of screws for the purpose named, but
What we do claim, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is--- The combination of a leather sole With metal plate, when the uppers are Secured by means of screws, substantially as and for the purpose described.
' F. LE BOY SINOUB.
H. It. TIAPHAGrAN.
