FASTENING DEVICE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 30, 1909.
Application filed November 22, 1907. Serial No. 403,376.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PHILIP E. Hoc- QU'ARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shirley, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, and JACOB C. BEACH and IsLEr H. BEACH, citizens of Canada, residing at Shirley, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, United States of America, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fastening devices, and while especially designed for use in connection with a cord or string for quickly tying up and loosening packages of letters, news papers and other mail matter, it will be ap arent that the device of this invention may lle used for a variety of purposes other than those above mentioned.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showing the fastening device or tie applied to a package of mail matter. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the fastening device per se, the parts thereof being shown in their gripping position. Fig. 3 is a similar View, but showing the gripping jaw operi to receive or release the cord or string. Fig. 4 is a similar viewlooking toward the other side of the device. F 5 is an edge view of the fastener.
The fastening device contemplated in this invention comprises two members, a body member 1 and a grip or clutch member 2. The body member l is arranged on a curve from end to end and is provided at or near one end with a hole 3 in which the cord or string or other flexible connection 4 is adapted to be fastened at one cnd. .l`hc opposite end of the body l is provided with a bitingl shoulder' 5 which is at an :ingle or oblique with respect to the pivot (5 which connects 'lhe grip or clutch 2 is pivotally conncctcd at one end to one sido of thc body l by means of the pivot G and 'when brought into alincmcnl with the end portion ofthe body l said member 2 extends beyond the extremity of thc body l and is rccurved to form a hook 7, the bend 8 of which lies at a short distance beyond the biting shoulder 5 i i i i i i of the member 1. Furthermore, the lengt-h of the recurved portion or hook '7 of the member 2 is suoli that when the grip or clutch 2 is swung to one side as shown in Fig. 3, an entrance throat 9 is left between the point of the hook and the side edge of the body 1 of suilicient width to permit the cord or string 4 to be quickly snapped into the hook or removed therefrom.
After the cord or string is wrapped around the package in the manner shown in Fig. l, the grip or clutch 2 is swung laterally to one side 'as shown in Fig. 3 g the cord or string is then passed through the entrance throat 9 into engagement with the bend S of the hook, whereupon the tension on the cord or string will rock the clutch member 2 back to a position substantially in alinement with the body 1 as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 whereupon the cord or string will be firmly gripped between the biting shoulder 5 of the body 1 and the bend 8 of the hook of the clutch member 2 and willbe held securely thereby until the tension on the spring or cord is relieved .so that the gripping member may be rocked laterally to again'release the cord and allow the same to be slipped out from under the hook 7 through the entrance throat 9.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is A fastening device of the character dcscribed comprising two members constructed of sheet metal, one member of which is continuously llat and curved throughout its length on opposite edges and a stringl connected at one end ol' said member having' a smooth edge which is inclined inwardly, thol second member having oneI cnd bcnt in hookforni to 'lit over said inclined cnd of the lirslmentioned member, said second member being pivoicd at ils other end to thc iirst mentioned member to permit of ils movement into and out of position to clamp the string between iis hook poi-lions and the inclined edge of the irst nnnliomnlfmember, substantially as specified.
