IMPRQVED APPARATUS FOR WINDING- MAPS, SONGS, CURTAINS, &c.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sanne.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, J AMES S. Os'rnANDnn, of the city and county of Albany, State of New York, have invented a new and improved Device for Revolving or Turning, `as may be required, Curtain or other Rollers or Spindles, and the like, which may be beyond the reach of a person desiring to operate them; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specili-l cation, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the invention.

Rollers for curtains, maps, illustrations of lessons, songs, and the like, when placed high above the reach of thehands, have been operated by cords and pulleys, connecting each with their individual roller, to serve as a means to operate the same, and'can only be thus arranged and operated at considerable expense, where manyiare used in a room or building, as Vcach must pulleys; and while cords and pulleys" are necessary, they are tobe considered, as now used, as necessary adjuncts, and not adornments, be they as haudsomely fitted and arranged as they possibly may be.

Another objection to such fixed individual cprds and pulleys is, that persons other than those whose duty or business it is to operate such rollers, can have equal facilities for effecting a change, which, under soignel circumstances, would not be advantageous or desirable. j By my invention,I,abrd a ready means of operating such rollers, which consist in a longhandled bar or stall', provided with a pair of pulleys and an endless leys, placcd'ncar the handle ofthe staff, which crank, when turned, rcvolves'or turns a keyatt-achcd to the second pulley, placed on the further end of the stattf.

The said winding-key or wrench D is provided with
