Description
,J. W. HILL.
Projectile;
Patented June 22, 18 69.
77 382 M95668 %m I I/ flit-ind sate J. W.;HILL, OF'JEFFERSON, IOWA.
hatter-s Patent No. 91,633, dated June 22, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN PROJECTILES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ot the same.
To all whom it may concem Be it known that I, J. HILL, of J efiers'on, in the county of Greene,and State'ofIowa,have invented a new and improved Projectile; and I do hereby declare that the followlngis a full, clear, and exact description there'- of, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the-same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specificatiom ,This invention'relates to an improved constructionof projectiles, having for its object to provide projectiles which will, after having travelled through a por-, tion of their flight, discharge, from acentral bore,
smaller projectiles, imparting to them, in addition to the speed attained in being discharged from the gun,
an; accelerated speed, by a secondary charge within the shell, the part so discharged being also charged with a third part, to be similarly discharged, or the same may be repeated a greater number of times, thus obtaining a'capacity of shooting a great distance.
In the accompanying drawings- I igure' 1 represents a'longitudinal section of a shell, constructed according to mydmprovement, and
,Figure 2 represents a plan of "the front end of the same. I
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
I propose to make the shell with a longitudinal bore through the greater portion of its length, and charge it with smaller portions, similarly formed and charged, each of such portions having acharge of powder behind it, in the bottom of the bore of the larger portion.
The last-bored portion may, if preferred, be charged placed within the bore of a gun, and fired in the usual maunen. It is provided with a large bore, B, and a.
fuse-hole, c. a
D represents an interior or secondary portion, similarly arranged, and fitting the bore B, into which it is placed in advance of a charge of powder, E, and which may, in like manneiybe loaded with another section, or with a solid bolt or round shot, F.
In case the latter does not fill the whole length of the bore, it may be filled with ballast, or other substance, to close the bore to the end, which I prefer to close with a cap, G, fitted with a sufficient degree of strength to hold until the shellisiired, but which will be forced off without endangering the bursting ofthe part D. g l
The end of the whole may be confined by a cap of canvas, or other substance, fastened into the groove H by a cord or wire tie, to prevent anyot 'the'interior parts from slipping out while being handled.
Each of the several fuse-holes may be provided with time-fuse, and the successive discharges of one'section. from the other thereby secured at the right time to give the greatest possible velocity to the several parts, the last one taking the accumulated speed of all the others;
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters the inner shell being closed by the cap G, as herein set forth and shown.
J. W. HILL.
