R. R. vFENNER, OF URBANA, ILLINOIS.A
Leum Parmi No. 91,617, dazed June 22, 1869.

AThe Behedule referred to in these Letten Patent and making part of me seme.
To all whom it may concmn:`
Beit known that 1, R. R. FENNER, of Urbana, in the county of Champaign, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Plow and Ido hereby declare that theA following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe aecompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked' thereon. v Figure -Il. is an lupright perspective view of my iuvention, from the. landside.
Figure 2 is a back view of iig. 1.
nigurc 3 is a plan view, the dotted lines showing the two extremes to which the beam can be thrown.
Figure 4 is an elevation of the diagonal slotted T- piece, or guide-plate.
j Figure 5 isa transverse sectional view on the line z zot' tig. l.
Figure 6 is a transverse sectional view ou the line y y of lig-2.
Similar letters of reference indicate like partsi'n all the figures.
This inventiou'relates to stubble and subsoii-plows; an(
1t consists in the construction and-combination o'f its various parts, as herein described and claimed.
A is the beam. v
B is the landsidev 0 is themould-board.
Lugs, d d', are 'constructed or cast, in the process of manutacturaon the -landside of the piow,.as shown in tigi 5. The standard D, which -supports the beam A and its adjun'ats, slides vertically within the groove, or channel thus formed.
The shalt D' passes through a portion of the bedplate E, projecting inward from the beam A, said shafthaving, upon eithenside otfthe said projection, rings, firmly soldered or otl1erwise-fastened thereto.
The lower portion of the shaft has a screw-thread surface, which plays through thescrew-threadeye e, said eye beingr firmly embedded in the laudside of the plow, as shownin iig. l.
The beam A has a free lateral swing ou the standard-bolt f.
F is a metal plate, coveringthe end, upper-and lower sides of the beam. .Projecting t'rom this plate is the threaded. rod g, passing through the upper slot of the guide-plate G.
g is a ring, placed over the rod g, while is n threaded and-wheel. gi is a metal pla having flanged edges, and is air- Qbv-- v tached to (or it maybe constructed with) the 'cross bar l.. Within the iianges of this plate Aslides the lower portion ofthe guide-plate G.
The hand-wheel 'h has a threaded rod, which passes' through the vertical slot, and is fastened by a screwnut.
The upper portionof the guide-plate is convex in form, to adapt' itself to the changes in the position of the beam.
When it is desired to have the'plow take more land, the hand-wheel g should he loosened, and the front end of the beam pushed inward. To take less land, it should be directed outward. Thus the width of the furrow becomes easily regulated.
v1f the plow runs too deep, loosen thehand-wheel h,
then lower the beam, by turning the shaft D' tothe right, andfasten th'ehand-wheel Itas before. It' the plow does not run deep-enough, perform the same operation, except you raise the beam.
As indicated bytlie,. title, my invention can be adjusted for use as a'subsol as well as for a stubbleplow".
When you wish to subsoil a piece o-f ground, set the plowas for stubble or old ground, plow once around the land, tben raise the beam to a 4sufficient height,l
and plow again in the same furrow; change back to stubble, and so on alternately, adjusting from stubble to subsoil, until the workis completed.
My invention is adapted .to ilght ditching-and all kinds of `plowing, and as such especially-commends itself for its convenience. as weil as its economy, to the judicious farmer. v Having thus described my invention,
-iVliat I claim, and desire to'secure by .Letters Pat- 'cnt from the United States, is-
1. The combination of .the shaft D', bed-plate E,
standard D, eye c, with the laudside of a plow, for the purpose ot' raising or lowering the beam, substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the guide-plate G, threaded rod'g, and plate H, for the purpose ot giving the beam A a lateralmotion,' substantially 'as and for the'purpose herein shown'and described.
In testimony whereof', I-llave signed my name to this specilieation, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. l
