Description

To all 'wiumiI 'it `'may concem:
snAcKLnToN, or FALI. mvnnmssicnusn'r'rs.
I sArErYens-vnnvn;
Be it known that I,'W1LLIAM TON, a citizen of the United States, 'residin at Fall River, in thecounty of Bristol an i State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements Vin Safety Gas-Valves; and I do declare the follo to the a full, clear, and exact description of 'the invention, lsuch as will enable others skilled inthe artvto which it;
ains to make and use the same.
Ple ymventionrelates to gas valves, and
- button of the valve and particularly to that type used upon light urners although it is well adapted for any he'object of the invention is the provi-,
sion of means which absolutely prevents the accidental turning on' ofv t e gas. Fre-` quently serious 'accidents have been caused by persons brushing against'the Operating thus turning it so that the gas escaped.
It is the object of my .invention to obviate this 'diflicultyf and broadly speaking con-' sists in roviding a latching` devicewhi'ch absolute y prevents the valve beingoperated by accident.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consistsv of' certain novel features of construction, combination `and arran ement of parts, as will be more fully descri ed and particularly pointed out in the ap ended claim.
' In t e drawings, Figure 1 is a pers ective view, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectiona view, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view'of the plug removed.l i
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 represents the valve casing which as usual is sup lied with a connecting nipple 2, and a jet nipple 3. Seated in the casin is the usual a erture turning plug 4, whic closes the out et to-the jet nipple 3. Secured to t the bottom 'of this turning plug is a notched `disk, adapted to be engaged by the lower end of a lvoted locking awl 6, carried in between t e ears 7, secure to the outer part of the casin and controlled so as to normally c kee lits loc g end in engagement with the dis 5 by `a spiral spring 8 w ich is disposed in a spring pocket formed in the casmg 1 above the ears: 7.' -.'I`he upper end is :pro-

In the position shown in F' 1 the valve e in theposi- I tion 'shown in 2 the vavle 'is in open ratentea m 1e, 1eoe. w
adapted to beengaged by the fingerjofithe operator so that its ower eng'ag' end he disengaged from the disk 5. z'Ighe pawl 6 1s forme with an in'wardly-'projecting lug. or finger'for holding the pring sprin pocket, 'said lug or nger forming a stop nniting the inward movement of, said is locked mv closed position, w
position. It Will be seen'readily from the may Vvided with a thumb piece 9,' which is i Sinthe' perspective and from' the seetional'view that the valve cannot be turned to open the same a unless the thumb piece is operated, although it may be closed at any time, the looking awl ridin idly over the notches which ,are ormed raing or in -the form of ratchet teeth. w j
It will be noted that the operation of the pawl 6 in no way tends' to loosen the connec tion between the valve casing -1 and the turn plug 4, as the pawl bears directly on the a -notched disk 5 which is arranged below the casing.
' From the foregoing description, taken in i connection with the accompa'nying drawings, the construction and operation of thev inventionv Will -be readily understood 'without re uiring a more extended explanationarious changes in the form, proporti'on and the minor details of constructlon may be resorted to'without departing fromthe principle or sacrificing an ofthe advantages of.
this invention as de ed inl the appended claim. r I I Having thus described my invention, what,
I claim and desir to secure by Letters Patent is spring poc et; form1ng a imitin saidpawl, a spring disposed in t e The combination with the valve casing i ears, a i i ,upper end removably pivoted between .the
ears, said pawl being provided with an inwardly pro'ecting lug ada ted to enter the stop for.
k pocket 'andaround the lug for holding the thumb iece 'away from the casing, a turn plug 'In't-eSt'nnony whereof I have hereunto set avlng a'downwardly projeotmg handle or- I my hand lu presence of two subscribing tion extendingthrough the oasmo' an sewltnesses.
eured thereto, and an enlarged disT; secmjed WILLAM SHACKLE' `01\;. 5 on the turn plug below the Valve easing, and Witnes'ses: I
in position thereon to be Yengaged by the JOHN T. JARVIS,
