SAFETY DEVICE FOR GAS-FIXTURES,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 6, 1909.
Application filed April 20, 1908. Serial No. 128,237.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that we, JOHN G. JAMBAS, a
a citizen of the United States, and FRANK J.
STEPHENS, a subject of the King of England,
and residents of lVatertown, county oi Jefferson, and State of New York, have invented certain new and usetul Improvements in Safety Devices lor Gas-Fixtures, oi
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates more particularly to a device ada ted to be applied to the or dinary gas coc or valve to automatically shut off the gas.
The primary object of the invention. is to provide a simple and efficient device which may be readily applied to the handle of the ordinary form of gas cook forming a part of the usual gas fixture, in such a way as will prevent the gas from being accidentally turned on, and which is adapted to-hold the gas plug or valve to permitthe burner to remain lighted at will, but in case of partly closing the same the said device will automatically force the cock to a closed. position so as to entirely shut off the gas, thereby preventing the possibility of an accident due to the gas being turned on, and also serving to economize in the use of gas.
A further object of the invention is to provide a weight which is so arranged on the handle of the cock that the latter may be either in a closed, partly closed, or an open position, and which when once in a closed positionwill hold the same to prevent accidental movement thereof. a
The invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this s ecification, and will then be ointed out in t e claims at the end of the c escription.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation showin the position of one form of fixture when t 1e gas is turned off; and Fig. 2 is a plan view'showing the position 01 the device when the gas is turned on.
The supply pipe may have the usual as fixture 11, which may be of any suitable mm, and to which the invention is applied,
or said device may be employed in connection with cocks or similar devices used to cut off the supply of gases or fluids. of various kinds. As shown the device is applied to the ordinary fixture 11, which has the usual burner 12, and a suitable cock comprising a casing 13 and a valve plug or memher 141. The plug has a rotary movement as usual, and is provided with pins 10 and 15 forming a stop to limit the movement of the plug, ,and which is adapted to engage the shoulders 16 arranged in. the casing, and to operate the plug is the handle 19, which may be of the usual or of any preferred construction.
To shut oil the gas automatically or to hold the valve or plug in either an open or a closed position, we provide a device 20. This device is provided with a weighted handle portion 21, and is pivoted at 22 to the plug handle 19 or other part thereof, so that said device may swing freely on its pivot and be placed in different positions. The device 20 has its end 23 adapted to rest on the handle or other part 19 of the plug, and in this position, whether that shown in full lines or that shown in dotted lines of Fig.
2, it will hold the plug open to permit a full flowof the gas; while if the part 19 is given arslight movement or the device 20 moved opposite to that shown in Fig. 2, the
weighted part 21 will automatically throw 1, the cock to a closed position so as to entirely shut off the gas as shown in Fig. 1. By this means the plug can be held in either position, and the liability 01 being turned on after once shut ofl is reduced to a minimum,
as any movement of the plug will cause the device 20 to restore the plug to its closed position.
The plug 14 may be held in one or more intermediate positions. ing 13 is provided with a projecting guide, are or device 24, and in this are is a notch 25 which is adaptedto be engaged by a pin or pawl 26 carried by the device 20. There may be more than one notch 25 and by means of said notches and the pin the plug 14 may be held in one or more intermediate positions between the closed and full open. position. As the device 20 is pivoted at 22, the said device may be moved so as to remove the pin 26 out of the path of the are if so desired. 1
From the foregoing it willbe seen that As shown the cas-' simple and efficient means is provided whereby a gas cock or other controlling device may be positively held 1n either a closed, open or an intermediate posltlon, and which is so made that the device will automatically if shut off the gas unless placed in a certain position, thus avoiding liability to accidents.
member pivotally mounted on one face of said key or handle and arranged tov be shifted relatively to the axis of the plug to hold the latter open or closed as the case may be.
2. In a safety device for fixtures, the combination with a valve casing, and a cutoff plug rotatably mounted therein and provided with a key or handle, of a Weighted member secured to one face of said key or handle and arranged to hold the plug open or closed as the case may be.
3. In a safety device for gas fixtures, the l combination With a valve casing, and a cutoff plug rotatably mounted therein, and provided With a key or handle, of weighted member pivotally mounted on one face of said key or handle, and arranged to be shifted relatively to the axis of the plug to hold the latter open or closed as the case may be, and means for locking said weighted member against movement.
4. In a safety device for gas fixtures, the combination With a valve casing, and a cutofi plug rotatably mounted therein and provided with a key or handle, of a Weighted member pivotally mounted on one face of said key or handle and arranged to be i shifted relatively to the axis of the plug to hold the latter open or closed as the case I may be, a pin carried by said Weighted memher, and means carried by said casing for l engaging said pin. i 5. In a safety device for gas fixtures, the l combination With a valve casing, and a cut-i off plug rotatably mounted therein and provided With a key or handle, of a Weighted & member pivotally mounted on one face of 4-;
i said key or handle and arranged to be shifted relatively to the axis of the plug to hold the latter open or closed as the case may be, a pin carried by said Weighted mem- 1 her, and a notched member carried by said casing for engaging said pin.
This specification signed and witnessed I this 16th day of April A. D. 1908. JOHN G. JAMBAS.
