Be it known that I, ANDREW J. CHANDLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at l-lermitage, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented or discovered certain new and usei'nl Improvements in Reel-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention has for its object to provide a reel holding apparatus of such construction that a plurality of horizontally rotatable reels, for holding wire or the like, may be conveniently mounted therein in such a manner as to permit them to pay oil2 the wire or other material either simultaneously or independently, and either in the same direction or in opposite directions.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of an apparatus embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same, partly in vertical section.

Referring to the drawings, the invention comprises a frame which may be of wood or other suitable material, and which willpreierably comprise a sill or bottom cross-piece 12, two uprights or posts 13 of suitable size to afford steadying feet, a cap or top cross piece '14, and inclined braces 15 which may be halved into the uprights or posts and into the ends oi the sill or bottom cross piece, the parts being all rigidly and preferably removably secured together in any suitable manner.

Bolted to the sill or lower cross piece is a hollow post or standard 16 which may be of cast iron or other suitable material, and which receives the lower reel 17. Secured to the lower side of the upper reel 18 is a circular metal bearing block 19 iitting over the upper end of the post or standard 16 so that the said upper reel is adapted to rotate on said post or standard independently of the lower reel and the said upper reel is steadied in this position. by a removable rod 20 which passes down through a suitable aperture in the cap or upper cross piece 14 and through a central hole in the said upper reel so as to enter the hollow post or standard 16. It will thus be seen that the weight of the upper reel will be sustained by the said post or standdard 16, and not by the lower reel, so that the said reels will be free to be rotated in either direction independently of each other. The heads of the reels may consist either of disks, as shown, or of spokes such as are common in wire reels, and of course may be of wood or metal.

From the foregoing it will be understood that the invention provides a convenient apparatus in which a plurality of reels may be conveniently mounted in such a manner that they will be adapted to be rotated either simultaneously or independently in paying ofi the wire or other material which they may contain. This apparatus is more particularly intended for use in connection with hay presses, ior holding wire to be drawn oii in binding bales of hay, and it aiiiords means whereby the wire can be supplied as needed, to the head blocks oi the balers and be kept out of mud or water which may be on the ground. it is compact and portable, and can be readily taken apart, if necessary.

ln placing the reels of' wire in the reel holder the lower reel will first be mounted in place on the post or spindle 16 and the upper reel -will then be inserted into place on top of said post, after which the rod 20 will be inserted in place to secure the upper reel in position.

lhile the construction herein shown is intended to hold only two reels, it is obvious that three or more reels might be contained in the holder by making the frame of suitable height and by providing the upper head of the upper reel with a suitable bearing block 21, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, which will be adapted to receive a bearing block like 19 attached to the lower end of another reel to be superposed on the upper reel 1S. This constructionl will permit the additional reel or reels to rotate independently of each other, but of course not with so much freedom as where only two reels are provided for, as in the preferred form of the invention, as the weight ofthe third reel would be borne by the reel 18, in case a third reel were employed.
