ORVILLE M. KNOX, OF ONEIDA, NE\V YORK.
WIRE-REEL.
I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,516, dated March 3 18961 Application filed. March 6, 1895. Serial No. 540,718. (No model.) i
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORVILLE M. KNOX, of Oneida, in the county of Madison, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wire-Reels, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to anovel construction of a wire-reel which is adapted to receive the wire in coils of different sizes and is de signed to be used more particularly in the building of wire fences. g
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, efficient, and inexpensive reel on which coils of different sizes can be easily placed and readily moved about and uncoiled, particularly in the building of a wire fence; and it consists essentially of a head permanently secured to one end of a horizontal shaft, a removable head on the opposite end of said shaft, and a series of cross-bars between said heads and adjustable radially for the purpose hereinbefore mentioned.
The reel is mounted on a suitable portable supporting frame provided with j ournalbearings for the shaft of the reel. The heads consist of metallic hubs mounted on the aforesaid shaft, in which are secured radiallyslotted arms, in the slotsof which are adjustably secured the aforesaid cross-bars, as hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is an end View of my improved reel shown mounted on a portable support. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section of a portion of one of the heads, showing the attachment of the arms to the hub and the adjustable connection between the arms and cross-bars. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of one of the cross-bars in perspective, and Fig. 5 shows a side view of the reel with one of the heads removed and the free ends of the cross-bars drawn in in order to receive a coil of wire.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a portable support, herein shown in the form of a bench or table, and mounted thereon are two vertical posts B B, provided on their upper ends with the journalbearings a a, in which is mounted the shaft 1). On each end of said shaft is mounted a hub c,
the latter removed from the shaft.
formed with the sockets c o, in which are secured the radial arms d d, provided with the longitudinal slots cl d, in which are adjustably secured the cross bars e e by pins 6. e passing through said slots and bars. To the side of each head is secured a ring or hoop f, which serves to brace the same and retain the arms in their connection with the hub.
The described reel is used in the following manner; The reel is removed from its support and placed endwise 011 the ground. The pins 6 e of the upper head are withdrawn and The free ends of the cross-bars are then drawn toward the shaft, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The coil of wire is then placed over the crossbars 6 e and is thereby caused to lie on the upper face of the lower or fixed head on which the ends of the cross-bars are adjusted to the size of the coil. The other head is then mounted on the shaft and fastened thereon, and the adjacent ends of the bars are adjusted and secured on said head to correspond to the other ends of the bars. The reel is then placed on its support and the wire can easily be uncoiled without liability of becoming tangled.
When the reel is used in the building of wire fences, Iprovide the end of the shaft 1) with a suitable wrench or crank Jr by which to turn the reel, so as to tighten the wire stretched on the fence, and in this operation the support A is to be braced in its position by means of a stake or post driven in the ground, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
What I claim is The combination, with a portable bench or table A, of two vertical posts B B mounted thereon and provided with suitable journalbearings, a horizontal shaft mounted removably in said bearings, a stationary or fixed head on one end of said shaft, a removable head on the opposite end thereof, and a series of radially-adjustable cross-bars pivoted to the fixed head and detachably connected to the removable head as set forth and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 18th day of February, 1895.
ORVILLE M. KNOX.
