Description

B; MGGAUGHEY. BROILER-` v APPLICATION FILED NOV. 25, 1908,

BERNARD McCAL'GI-IEY, Oli PAWTUUKET, RHODE ISLAND.
BROILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 25, 1908. Serial No. 464,491.
To all whom it may concern:
Bev it known that I, BERNARD MCCAUGHEY,
-a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of 'Providence and Stateof Rliodelsland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broilers, of whiclithe following is a specification.
My invention relates to broilers and has for itsobjects not only the ends commonly Sought in this class of structures, but also meansfor affording a thorough cooking and exposure of an article to be cooked upon both its sides; an improved means of pivotally connectingthe leaves g .and meansjfor pivotally connecting the leaves with, the
aine or base in such a manner as to leave the hands of the operator free to insert the article to be broiled'; and to attain the de sired objects in a simple, durable, and con-- venient structure.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
wherein,
Figure 1 is a side 'elevation of my novel structure with the housing closed, Fig. 2, a'
perspective view of the saine showing the ousing cover elevated and the top leaf of the frame in opened position, Fig. 3, an end elevation of the frame, and Fig. 4, a partial section on line a; of Fig. 3.
Like reference characters indicate like I parts throughout the views.
My broiler comprises a fiat metal base or frame, 1, provided with a central aperture, 2,- and having adjacent thereto upon the bottom face of the base pivoted fingers or clips, 3. Mounted by hinges, 4, to the upper face of the base is'a housing cover, 5, having an end aperture, 6, for the handles. A catch,
. 7, is located upon the top of the base to engage one endof the housing, and a pivoted catch, 8, at the opposite end of the base provided with a handle, 9, upon its f ree end. Near one end of the opening, 2,- of the base are two interspaced posts, 10. Fixed tothe base, 1, by rivets, 11, or otherwise is the flattened end portion, 12, of a pivot pin or projection, 13.
For use in the describedor other convenient housing deviceis a broiling frame coniprising upper andlower leaves, 14 and 15. lheformer comprises a broad marginal band or frame, 16, longitudinal cross bars, 17, and
achndla 18. The lower leaf, 15, has corre- Patented March 1e, 1909.
fixed by rivets, 24, or otherwise to ltht-)frames, q
16 and19, respectively, butts or hinge plates,
25 and 26, connected byja p intle, 27. Upon 7G the other side of thegcavities are similar plates, 28 and 29, fixed .respectively to the frames, 16 and 19, by rivets, v30, and con nected by a pintl'e, 31. The two hinge memf bers described in detail above permitunlimited distention of the leaves, 14 and 1.5. The leaves are mounted upon the base introducing them into the opened housing sothat the pin or projection, 13, passes through the cavities, 22, 2 3. The combined length ofthe latter is ample to allow the projection, 13, to have Afree vertical play therein. This slot and hinge arrangement also makes it ossible for the leaf, 14, to take andretain t e position shown in Fig. 2, with the broad surface of its frame, 16, resting upon and supported in distended position bythe projection, 13, while the frame, 15, is substantially horizontal with its handle, 21, .resting upon the base, '1, intermediate the posts, 10. The particular arrangement of slots permitswhatever frame happens to be lowermost to lie in a position closer to the bed of the coals, thus securing a maximum of heat.
TWithA leaves in the position just described, one or botliof the operators hands is free to insert into leaf, 15, the article to be broiled; after which the frame, v16, is brought down over the article and upon the lower frainc with the handle, 18, extending betweenthe posts, 10.
' While broiling the leaves are manually rotated upon the projection, 13, through the medium of the handles.
Wiliat I claim is z- 1. In a broiler, the combination of two frames, each provided with a marginal cavity opening into the other and vertically elongated, bars upon the frames, hinge members connecting the frames adjacent the cavities, a base receiving said frames, a pivot projecting longitudinally from said base for coperation with said openings and handles upon the o posite ends of the frames, the rims ot' said 'rames being formed of lat stock vertically elongated and serving to prevent displacement of the material being broiled.
2. In a broiler, the combination of a base having an opening, a fixed pivot pin on the base extending into said opening, and two frames, each provided with a'vertically elongated marginal cavity, said cavities opening into each other and receiving said pivot pin, hinge members connecting the frames adjacent said cavities, and handles projectin from` the opposite ends of the frames and restin upon said base.
v3. fn a broiler, the combination of a base having an opening, a fixed pivot pin on the base extending into said opening, and two frames, each provided with a vertically elongated marginal cavity, said cavities opening into each other and receivin said pivot in, hingemembeis connecting t 1e frames at jacent said cavities, handles projecting from the opposite ends of the frames and resting upon said base, and interspaced osts secured to the base adjacent one en of said opening and between which said handles are received.
4. In a broiler, the combination of a base having an opening, a iixed pivot pin on the base extending into said opening, and two trames', each provided with a vertically elon gated marginal cavity, said cavities opening into each other and receiving said pivot pin,
hinge members connecting the frames adjacent said cavities, handles projecting from the opposite ends of the frames and resting upon said base, interspaced posts secured to the base adjacent one end ol" said opening and between which said handles are rcceiverh and a cover hinged to said base upon one side of said opening to close over the -trames.
5. In a broiler, the combination of a base having an opening, a iixed pivot pin on the base extending into said opening, and two frames, each provided with a vertically elon gated marginal cavity` said cavities opening into` each other and receiving said pivot pin, hinge members connecting the frames adj acent said cavities, handles projecting from the opposite ends of the frames and resting upon said base, interspaced posts secured to the base adjacent one end of said opening and betweenwhich said handles are received, a cover hinged to said base upon one side oi said opening to close over the frames, a iixed catch upon one end of the base to engage one end of said cover, and a pivoted catch uppn the opposite end of said base to engage the op Osite end of said cover.
n t-estirnoir'xv whereof I have alt'med nl v signature in presence of two witnesses.
