I ELJ. POPE. CONTRACTING REEL FOR PAPER MAKING MACHINERY.

UNITED STATES PATENT OPETCE.
EDWARD J. POPE, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO 0. ELMER POPE PAPER COMPANY, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
CONTRACTING REEL FOR PAPER-MAKING MACHINERY.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. POPE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Contracting Reels for Paper-Making Machinery; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to reels for paper making machinery.
It has for its object to provide an improved construction of reel of the class shown and described in my pending application, filed December 26, 1907, Serial No. 408,090, in which the reel is adapted to be automatically contracted as the paper is wound thereon so that each layer of the paper will be of the same length whereby the strain on the ma terial does not increase as it winds up and an even thickness of the 1 iaterial is produced.
The invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the reel, one of the hubs and a part of the hollow shaft .being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a left hand elevation. Fig. 3 is a broken end elevation showin the bracket for supporting the drum upon vv hich the rope carryin the weight is wound, and Fig. 4 is a detailed view of an arm of one of the spiders.
In carrying out my invention, I mount the hollow shaft 1 in suitable bearings 2 on the uprights or standards 3. Spiders 4. are rigidly secured to said shaft and carry radially arranged and longitudinally movable rods 5. Ribs 6 upon which the paper is wound are carried by the outer ends of said rods 5.
Each arm of each spider is provided with a erforated lug 7 to guide one of the rods 5. Each arm also has laterally extending lugs 8 between which a bent lever 9 is pivoted. One end of said lever en ages a pin 10 passed through the rod 5 while the other end of said lever is adapted to be engaged by a hub 11 mounted to slide on the shaft 1. Each of the rods 5 carries a collar 12 to limit the outward Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 24, 1908.
Patented March 9, 1909.
Serial No. 445,210.
movement thereof by coming in contact with the lugs 8.
The hollow shaft 1 is longitudinally slotted at 13 and in said shaft is arranged a bar 141 connected to pins 1 5 which are passed through the hubs and the slots 13. A beam 16 is hinged to the floor and normally pressed against the protruding end of the bar 14. by means'of a weight 17 supported by a r0 e 18 which is wound around the drum 19 and connected to the upper end of said beam. The drum 19 is mounted on a bracket 20 which straddles the bearing for the shaft 1 and is secured to the right hand standard or support for the machine.
It will be seen that the pressure of the beam 16 upon the end of the bar 14, which is caused by the weight 17, tends to yieldingly press the hubs 11 against the inner ends of the levers 9 which causes said levers to normally hold the rods 5 and ribs 6 in an extended position. When the paper or material is wound upon the reel the latter gradually contracts or shrinks so that the outside diameter of the roll of material remains constant and the under folds or layers become slack and drop in between the ribs toward the shaft as shown in Fig. 2. The degree of contraction of the reel may, of course, be regulated by varying the weight 17.
I claim:
1. A reel of the character described consisting of a shaft, spiders secured thereon, radially arranged and longitudinally movable rods mounted on said spiders, ribs car ried by the ends of said rods, levers pivoted on said spiders, one end of one of said levers engaging each of said rods, hubs mounted to slide on said shaft and adapted to engage the other ends of said levers, and means to yieldingly press said hubs against said levers whereby said rods and ribs are normally held in an extended position.
2. A reel of the character described .consisting of a hollow shaft having slots therein, spiders secured on said shaft, radially arranged and longitudinally movable rods mounted on said spiders, ribs carried by the ends of said rods, levers pivoted on said spiders, one end of one of said levers engaging each of said rods, hubs mounted to slide on said shaft and adapted to engage the other ends of said levers, pins on said hubs extending through the slots in said shaft, a bar ar ranged in said shaft and connected to said pins, and means to yieldingly hold said bar in position to press said hubs against said levers whereby said rods and ribs are normally extended.
3. A reel of the character described consisting of a hollow shaft having slots therein, spiders secured on said shaft, radially arranged and longitudinally movable rods mounted on said spiders, ribs carried by the ends of said rods, levers pivoted on said spiders, one end of one of said levers engaging each of said rods, hubs mounted to slide on said shaft and adapted to engage the other ends of said levers, pins on said hubs extending through the slots in said shaft, a bar arranged in said shaft and connected to said pins, a hinged beam engaging the end of said bar and extending above the same, and a weighted rope connected to the upper end of said beam and wound around a drum for the purpose specified.
4. A reel of the character described consisting of a hollow shaft having slots therein, spiders secured on said shaft, raida'lly arranged and longitudinally movable rods mounted on said spiders, ribs carried by the ends of said rods, levers pivoted on said spiders, one end'of one of said levers engaging each of said rods, hubs mounted to slide on said shaft and adapted to engage the other ends of said levers, pins on said hubs extending through the slots in said shaft, a bar arranged in said shaft and connected to said pins, a hinged beam engaging the end of said bar and extending above the same, a drum mounted on a bracket which straddles the shaft, and a Weighted rope connected to the upper end of said beam and wound around said drum for the purpose specified.
5. A reel of the character described consisting of a shaft, spiders secured thereon, radially arranged and longitudinally movable rods mounted on said spiders, laterally extending lugs on said spiders, bent levers pivoted to said lugs, one end of one of said levers engaging each of said rods, hubs mounted to slide on said shaft and adapted to engage the other ends of said levers, and means to yieldingly press said hubs against said 1evers whereby said rods and ribs are normally held in an extended position.
6. A reel of the character described consisting of a shaft, spiders secured thereon, radially arranged and longitudinally movable rods mounted on said spiders, laterally extending lugs arranged in pairs on said spiders, each of said rods extending between one of the pairs of lugs, collars mounted on said rods and adapted to engage said lugs to limit the outward movement of said rods, bent levers pivoted to said lugs, one end of one of said levers engaging each of said rods, hubs mounted to slide on said shaft and adapted to engage the other ends of said levers, and means to yieldingly press said hubs against said levers whereby said rods and ribs are normally held in an extended position.
In testimony whereof, I a flix my signature, 1n presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD J. POPE.
