Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 9, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. Gnnnn, citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Island, in the county of Hall and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention provides a support or rest for the head and designed most especially for barbers and dentists chairs, although adapted for use in any capacity where an adjustable and easy support for the head is desired.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.
While the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the invention applied to a chair, the head rest being turned backward so as to show more clearly the relation of the frame bearing and standard. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the head rest, the dotted lines showing the endless apron. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line aa of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on the line bb of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of a roller, showing the spindle in full lines and a portion of the frame.
Corresponding and like parts are referred' to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The rest comprises a frame 1, bearing 2 and apron 3, the latter being endless and supported upon rollers 4. The frame 1 isprovided at a central point with a reduced portion 5 which is round in cross section and adapted to fit within the bearing 2 for rotative movement. The end portions of the frame are curved outwardly and forwardly to provide arms of similar formation which terminate in flattened ends 6 which support the rollers 4 and the endless apron 3 against downward displacement. Spindles 7 project from the flattened ends 6 and support the rollers 4, the latter being prevented from vertical displacement by means of nuts 8 fit ted to the upper ends of the spindles 7. Caps 9 are fitted to the upper ends of the rollers 4 so as to conceal the nuts 8, to close the upper ends of the rollers and to give a finished appearance thereto. The end portions or arms of the frame 1 adjacent to the reduced portion 5 are widened and provided in their lower sides with recesses 10 to re ceive, respectively, a latch 11 and a latch operating lever 12, said parts having widened portions fitted in. the respective recesses and held in place by a pivot fastening 13.
The bearing 2 is formed of sections to enable it the more easily to be fit ed about the reduced portion 5. The sections may be connected in any manner, as by means of a splice-piece 1 1 fitted into grooves for. red in adjacent ends of the sections and held in place by pins 15. The opposite ends of the sections project and are adapted to receive between them the upper end of a standard 16, or like supporting means, to which the head rest may be attached. Fastenings 17 extend through openings in the projected end portions of the bearing sections and serve to secure the same to the standard 16, or other equivalent part. The bearing 2 is approxi mately of circular form and is provided intermediate of its ends with a circular enlargement 18 having a stop shoulder 20 and a series of notches 20 to form teeth which cooperate with the latch 11 to secure the head rest in the required angular position.
The latch 11 has a finger piece 21 at one end, and its opposite end portion extends across the space formed between the inner ends of the arms of the frame and is adapted to enter the recess in which the latch operating lever 12 is pivoted, thereby obtaining a firm bearing at each side of the part 2. The latch operating lever has a finger piece 22, similar in construction and arrangement to the finger piece 21 so as to conform to the arm or end portion of the frame. The end portion of the latch operating lever overlaps the projecting end of the latch, thereby enabling said latch to be disengaged from the bearing 2 upon the application of pressure to the finger piece 22. A spring 23 arranged in the recess in which the latch 11 is fitted, normally exerts a pressure upon said latch to hold it in engagement with the bearing and its projecting end in the recess in which the latch operating lever 12 is fitted.
The apron 3 may be of textile, leather or other material, and is endless so as to be turned upon the rollers 4 and bring a new portion in position to receive the head. The endless c ron is adapted to be lengthened or shortenecI, as may be required, and for this purpose a buckle 24 is secured to one end of the apron and is adapted to make adjustable connection with the opposite end portion.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A head rest comprising a frame having its middle portion reduced, rollers fitted to end portions of the frame, an endless apron mounted upon said rollers, a bearing receiving the reduced middle portion of the frame, and a latch pivoted to the frame upon one side of the bearing and adapted to make adjustable comiection with said bearing and engage with the frame upon the opposite side of said bearing.
2. A head rest comprising a frame having its middle portion reduced, rollers fitted to end portions of the frame, an endless apron mounted upon said rollers, a bearing receiving the reduced middle portion of the frame, a latch pivoted to the frame upon one side of the bearing and adapted to make adjustable connection with said bearing and engage with the frame upon the opposite side of said bearing, and a latch operating lever pivoted to the frame upon the side of the bearin receiving the free end of the latch and adapted when operated to effect disengagement of the latch from the bearing.
3. In a head rest, the combination of a frame having its middle portion reduced and having the parts bordering upon the space formed by the reduced portion widened and recessed, a bearing mounted upon the reduced portion of the frame, and a latch pivoted in one of the recessed ends and having an end portion adapted to enter the opposite recessed end, said latch adapted to engage with the bearing and hold theframe in the required angular position.
4. In a head rest, the combination of a frame provided with supporting means for the head and having its middle portion re.- duced and the end portions bordering upon the space formed by the reduced portion widened and recessed, a bearing mounted upon said reduced portion of the frame, a latch pivoted in one of said recessed ends and having an end portion fitted in the opposite recessed end, and a latch operating lever pivoted in the last mentioned recessed end and adapted to overlap the adjacent end of the latch to effect disengagement of the latter from the bearing.
5. In a head rest, the combination of a frame provided with supporting means for the head and having its middle portion reduced, a sectional bearing fitted to the reduced portion of the frame and having an annular enlargement formed with a stop shoulder and a series of notches to provide teeth, and a latch pivoted to the frame and adapted to secure the same in the required angular position with reference to the bearmg.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
