Application filed `Tune 19,-l9D8. Serial No. 439.388.
the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art 'to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to smoking appliances, employed for holding smoking tobacco, matches and a pipe in convenient and plates detached.
accessible position, and has for one of its objects to produce a simply` constructed device ofthis character 'of improved construction, and increased utility and efficiency.l
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having means for storing tobacco, matches and a pipe within acasing and wherein they are each protected and readily accessible independently. With theseand other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features. v'of construction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically, pointed out 1n the claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the improved apparatus. Fig. 4 is a sectionalside view on the line 4 4 of F ig. 2. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-#5 of' Fig. 2Q Fig. 6 is aplan view with the hinge cover removed. Fig. 7 isjaperspective view of one of the slide The improved device comprises' a casing 1() of sheet metal referably with sides and rounded edges and) with one end open and provided with a cover 11 hinged at'12 to the casin Theopposite'end of the casing is close as at 13 and provided with two openings or apertures 14-15 and longitudinal guidewa s 28-29. The interior of the casing is ivided by partitions 16-17 into three compartments, a pipe receiving oompartment 18 accessible through the hinged closure 11, av match receivingfcenipartment 19 accessible through the aperture 15, and a tobacco receiving compartment 2O accessible through the aperture 14C.
The pipe emplo ed in the improveddevice will preferaby be of the separable 'or folding form, which will thus occupy less space and consequently leave more space for the tobacco which is a desirable condition. I
Disposed within the casing 10 is a diaphragm or division platef21 spaced slightly from the apertured end 13 and provided with.
apertures-224213 and registering with the apertures 11i- 15. 'Slida ly' dis iosed between the casing end 13 and tthe diaphragm or division plate'21 are imperforate 'out oi valves or slides' wir-25, the slide'Zd adapted to close the registering apertures 11i-22, and
the slide .25 adapted to close the registering The slides 24e-25 are apertures 15-23. reduced in width at their inner ends and lap past each other when open as shown, and are provided with finger lugs 26-27 projecting respectively through the uideways28--29- The slides `are thus mova between the end'13 and diaphragm 2l., by simply manipulating the finger lugs to open and' .close the compartments 19 or 2() vas recpnred.
he casing is made of sheet metal, and the4 sides preferably covered with leather, leatherette, or like fabric or material, and the.' hinge covers preferably nickel. plated or otherwise ornamented.
. The diaphragm 21 is an im ortant feature ie independently of theinvention as it not only protects the guides and provides a guideway therefor, butalso prevents the tobaccoor matches from' escaping through the guide slots! A cover 3() will preferably be employeeover the end containing the apertures Iii-15 and hin ed atA 31 to the casing, the cover 30 being su stantially the'same as the cover il at the other end oi the device. f
What is claimed, is 1. A device ofthe classdescribed com rising a casing divided into com artnents vaving separate outlet apertures Yt rough one end and with an irdependent guides/'ay associated with each outlet', a p ate spaced from the end having the outlets and the' guideways and provided with o enlngs registering vwith the outlets, shut oli p ates operating be tweensaid spaced plate and said apertured end and with Finger lugs projecting through said guideways.
2. A device of theclass described comprising a casing having a closure at one end except 'or spaced apertures therein and having an intermediate partition eXtendin0- partly therethrough an thence extendingklongitudinally toward one end whereby a compartment 1s formed within the casingl at one corros ner and accessible through one end oi thec'asing', a detachable closure bearing over the 4accessible through said apertures, a detachi able closure over the apertured end oi the casing, and slides arrgtnged to independently open 'and close said. apertures. 'l
3. A device of the class described comprising a casing having at closure at one end except for spaced apertures therein. and having en intermediate partition extending partly therethrough and thence extending ongitudinally toward one end whereb;T e compnrtment is formed within the casing at one corner and accessible through one end of the casing, e. detachable closure bearing over the casing and closing said corner compartment, u longitudinal partition extending from said. transverse partition to the apertured closure of the casing and forming two compartments accessible through saidep'ertures, and slides arranged to independently open und close said apertures.
'In testimony whereof, I eil-1X my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
