OPTICAL-ILLUSION DEVICE.

Be it k110i: n that I, FRED J. I/VIEDENBECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenroclr, in the county of Waushara, State My invention relates to a new and improved optical illusion device dependent for its operation upon the phenomenon of interference of rays of light passing through a grating of finely ruled lines; and the object thereof is to produce an attractive and effective device depending upon the above mentioned principle and designed to be used for advertising purposes or as a toy.

WVith the above object in view m invention consists in the improved optica illusion device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, described in the following specification, and particularly claimed in the concluding claims.

In the drawing; Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof, and Fig. 3 is an elevation showing a detail.

In the drawing, 1 and 2 are two members forming the exterior casing of my device, which members are preferably made of wood and are joined together at 3, for which purpose the member 2 is provided with a reduced portion 4 which fits within a cavity 5 formed within the member 1, as shov. n, and whereby a joint between the members 1 and 2 is formed. The members 1 and 2 are provided with passages 6 and 7 formed by boring longitudinally of said members, so that one may look through the device.

The members 1 and 2 are so formed that when assembled my device is largest at the middle and tapers toward both ends like a cigar, and the exterior surface thereof will preferably be stained and if desired grained to resemble the wrapper of a cigar.

Advertising matter may be printed or otherwise placed upon the exterior surface of my device in case it is used for advertising purposes.

Such being the construction of my im proved optical illusion device it is held to the eye of the user, he preferably facing a strong light and looking toward a light background as the sky, and a solid object like a pencil or the fingers viewed through the device. The object viewed will then appear translucent, and in the case of the fingers the darker or solid portion will suggest the bones of the hand. And the general effect will be in fact, so far as what is seen is concerned, much like the effect produced by the familiar and scientifically truthful X-ray device.

Having thus described my invention and explained the use thereof, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In a device of the class described, an exterior casing comprising two members one of which is reduced at one end to enter and fit Within a cavity formed in the other mem ber to thereby form a joint; a piece of feather mounted upon the end of said reduced portion; passages extending longitudinally of both said members; and a band extending round said members and adapted to conceal the joint between them.

2. In a device of the class described, an exterior casing comprising two members one of which is reduced at one end to enter and fit within a cavity formed in the other member to therebyform a joint; a piece of feather mounted upon the end of said reduced portion; passages extending longitudinally of both said members; and a band extending around said members and adapted to conceal the joint between them, said members being tapered from their abutting ends toward their free ends whereby said exterior casing is in form similar to a cigar.
