WILLIAM KNAUS, Ol ,OTTERVILLE, MISSOURI Letters Patent No. 91,452, dated .Tune 15, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN NAIL-EXTRACTOR.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part 0f the same.
To all whom 'it ma/y concern l Be it known that I, WILLIAM KNAUS, of Otter ville, in the county of Cooper, and State ofMissouri,.
l have madecertain new and useful Improvements in "Nail-Extractors, and I do yhereby declare that the following isl a vfull and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andto the let- `ters of reference marked thereon. Y The object of this invention is tol produce an instruplate, to which is 'also pivoted a counter-hook, which passes through a mortise in the level', and terminates close in front of the point of the lever, in such a position as to grasp the head of the nail between these two hooks.
Ilo enable those skilled inthe art to make and use my improved nail-extractor, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The drawing represents a side and front elevation of the improved nail-extractor.
The leverA is of metal, and has a sharp point, c,
and a handle, A', Vby means of' which to operate it.
V A short distance above its point, the lever A is fulcrumed by the pivota to the base, or fulcrnm-plate B.
At or near the heel of this plate, the counter-hook C is pivoted to it by means of the pin b.
Brom this pivot-point the said counter-hook curves forward, and passes through a mortise at a2, in the lever A, and terminates at c in a kind of claw-hook, directly in front 'of the hook, or sharp point a.
At the point where the hook O passes through the mortise of the lever A, a small rivet, as, passes through a curved slot, d, in the piece C, and permits it to play back and forth in the said mortise, but prevents it from being wholly withdrawn therefrom. v
The mode of operating this instrument is as follows:
By means of its handle the sharp hook ais pressed down into the Wood, close by the side of the nail to be drawn, and then the handle A' is to be pressed back on the fulcrum-plate B, thereby bringing the point of the hook G in contact with the front of the nail-head, which is then firmly seized between thetwo hooks, and
by pressing farther back on the lever, will be exv tracted.
What I claim, is-
'lhe implement herein described, consisting of the fnlcrum-plate B, the hook C, and lever A, all constructed and arranged as set forth.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand and seal, in presence of l WILLIAM KNAUS. [Ln s.]
