MERCHANDISE HANGER.

INVENTOH SAMUEL 5. WEAVER,
SAMUEL S. WEAVER, OF SHELBY, OHIO.
MERCHANDISE-HANGER.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented March 9, 1909.
Application led April 16, 1908. Serial No. 427,434.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. WEAVER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Shelby, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Merchandise- Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in merchandise hangers and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the supporting bracket and a portion of one of the supporting arms. Fig. 3 is a side view of one of the arms, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view of a portion of one of the supporting arms.
The present embodiment of my invention comprises a bracket consisting of a base l, and provided with openings 2, whereby it may be secured to a support by screws 3, and a pair of spaced lateral flanges 4, the said flanges having their free edges inclined as at 5, and provided with a series of openings 6, the openings of one flange being in alinement with the openings of the other flange. The plate is cut-away as at 7 and the flanges are braced against the plate by the braces 8.
The supports each comprise a pair of rods 9, having their inner ends provided with an angular portion 10 for engaging the openings 6, and the outer end of one rod is provided with a bracket 11, having a socket 12 for receiving the said rod, and a lateral arm 13 provided with an opening throughy which passes the threaded end 14 of the other. rod, a nut 15 being threaded on to the end of the rod for securing the parts together, and adjusting same. It will be noticed, that the angular end of one rod is inserted in an opening in one of the flanges and that the angular end of the other rod is inserted in the corresponding opening of the other flange. By reason of the inclination of the edges of the flanges, and the inclination of the series of openings, the supporting arms fold flatly upon each other like the leaves of a book, as will be evident from an inspection of Fig. 1. The rods are braced together by means of truss members 16, said members being in the shape of the letter X, and provided at the end of each arm of the X with a sleeve 17 embracing a rod, a set screw 18 being threaded through the sleeve for retaining the truss member in its adjusted position. In the drawings the arms are shown as provided with two truss members, but it is obvious that more or less would be made use of depending upon the length of the arms.
The improved hanger is especially adapted for displaying carpets, floor rugs and such like articles, and is provided with nine arms in the present instance, each arm supporting two floor rugs, or twenty four samples of carpet.
By tightening or loosening the nut 15 the outer edges of the supports may be raised or lowered for the purpose of adjusting them with respect to the bracket and to each other.
I claim:
1. A merchandise hanger comprising a plate adapted to be secured to a support, and provided with parallel lateral flanges spaced apart from each other, the outer edges of the flanges being inclined with respect to the plate, and provided with a series of spaced openings, the openings in the one flange being in alinement with the openings in the other flange, and a plurality of supports each comprising a pair of rods having their inner ends bent to engage corresponding openings in the flanges, a bracket provided with a socket for receiving the free end of one of the rods, and with an opening through which passes the free end of the other rod, said free end being threaded, and a nut on the threaded end for securing the parts together, and a plurality of truss members arranged at spaced intervals between the rods.
2. A merchandise hanger comprising a support provided with lateral flanges, having inclined outer edges, each provided with a series of openings, the openings of one flange alining with the openings of the other flange, and a plurality of supporting arms, each comprising a pair of rods having their inner ends bent to engage corresponding openings in the flanges, means for connecting the free ends of the rods, and a plurality of truss members arranged at spaced intervals between the rods.
SAMUEL S. WEAVER.
