APPLICATION FILED 1'23. 28, 1908.

ALVA ALLEN, OF NORTH ENGLISH, IOWA.
EAVES-TROUGH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 2, 1909.
Application filed February 28, 1908. Serial No. 418,319.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVA ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at North English, in the county of Iowa and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Eaves- Trough, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in eaves troughs, and has for its object to provide more particularly for the attachment thereto of the down-water spout, as usually employed in connection with such troughs.
It, also, has for its olject to effect the ready and economic connection between said trough and spout. Also, to provide for securing connection or attachment of the down spout with the trough as applied in place for use upon a building and without this being done in the shop, as usually practiced.
Additional advantages and objects of my invention will be apparent from the subjoined description and accompanying illustration.
The invention consists more especially in the joint formed between the eaves trough and a down spout, and in the details for carrying out the same, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed and pointed out by the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention,Figure 1 is a broken longitudinal section produced through an eaves trough and a down spout, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a broken detached view of said down spout. Fig. 3 is a broken enlarged partly sectional and perspective view, more clearly disclosing the joint between said eaves trough and down spout.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In the practice of my invention, the eaves trough 1, as usual, is provided with an opening 2 near one end for the attachment thereof of the down spout 3, said opening lzeing formed in the ordinary way by the use of shears, which will be readily understood.
The down spout 3, as herein illustrated, has its upper preferably flared end bent or turned outward as at 4, and then folded down upon itself as at 5, and then reversed, extending in the opposite direction, as at 6, in one continuous piece, thus forming a lower and 1 an upper flange with a pocket 7 between them to receive the bottom of the eaves trough at the edges of the opening 2 formed therein. It will be noted that after the in sertion of the edges of the opening 2 of the eaves trough into the pocket 7, that the upper flange formed wall of said pocket is hammered down upon the inner surface of the bottom of said eaves trough, with the lower flange formed Wall, or outwardly turned portion 4, formed upon said down spout, resting upon a suitable support, and by means of such hammering, said lower flange 4 is at the same time clamped tightly against the under side of the bottom of said eaves trough, thus firmly uniting said eaves trough and down spout, all Without the use, as will be observed, of solder. It will thus be noted that from the foregoing a very simple and economic methodv of attaching the down spout to the eaves trough is effected and whereby, as stated, the use of solder as usually employed for such purposes, is dispensed with which is a desideratum for connecting together these parts. It is, also, found in practice that by means of my invention the saving of caves trough material is greatly promoted and. time expedited in forming the joints between the eaves trough and its down spout.
It will be understood that details as to construction, arrangement and disposition of the parts above described may be readily changed or modified without departing from the spirit of my invention, and the same yet remain, under the terms of my claim, fully protected.
lVhat is claimed is:
As an article of manufacture, a connection for eaves trough and down spout, comprising a sheet metal down spout body, having a rib formed near one end thereof, comprising a flattened bead, arcuate in elevation, to fit the cross sectional contour of an eavestrough, and a flange extending beyond said bead, at right angles to and with its edge in parallel relation to the bead.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto alliXed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
ALVA ALLEN.
Witnesses:
