UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEreE.
ROBERT E. SHARP, OF GRADY, OKLAHOMA.
CHURN.
To all whom it may concer/n:
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. SHARE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grady, in the county of Jefferson and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in churns and more particularly to a cover for a churn body carrying a dasher, a motor for o erating the latter and means for remova ly securing the cover upon the churn body.
The object of the invention is to provide a sim le and practical device of this character W ich may be produced at a comparatively small cost, and which will be strong, durable and convenient in use.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter .fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side e evation of the invention a plied to a churn body; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a vertical section; and Fig. 4 is a top plan view.
In the drawings 1 denotes a churn body which may be of any suitable form and construction but which, as illustrated, is a cylindrical vessel.
2 denotes the improved cover which is removably mounted upon the body and carries a motor 3 and means for operating a dasher 4. As illustrated, said cover is circular and adapted to be removably retained u on the upper edge of the body 1 by spring c ips 5 secured at one end to the top of the cover and having curved depending portions to engage the side wall of the body. Any number of said spring clips may be provided, four being referably used and arranged at equally distant points upon the Cover, as shown in Fig. 4. The motor 3 is preferably a spring motor secured in a suitable casing having attaching feet 6 to rest upon the top of the cover and apertured to receive fastening screws 7. The motor is adapted to be wound up by means of a removable crank handle S and upon its drive shaft 9 is secured a crown gear 10 which meshes with a pinion 11 fixed to a vertical shaft 12 which carries the dasher 4. Said shaft 12 extends through a central opening in the cover 2 and Specification of Letters Patent.

( is mounted for rotation in a bearing opening in the lower member 13 of a Ushaped bear# ing bracket 14, the upper member 15 of which has a bearing opening to receive the reduced upper end 16 of the dasher shaft. Said U-sh. ed bracket 14 has its lower member forme( with op ositely projecting attaching feet 17 whicli are apertured to receive fastening screws 1S and it not only serves as a bearing for the dasher shaft but also as a guard for the pinion 11 which is arranged within it. The lower end of the shaft 12 is tubular or hollow, being formed with a squared bore or socket 19 to receive the similar shaped upper end 2O of the shank or spindle 21 of the dasher 4. This dasher may be of any suitable form and construction but, as illustrated, it comprises a plurality of curved agitating members 2,2 secured at their ends to up er and lower heads 23 which are fixed to tie spindle 21. The squared end 2() of the dasher spindle prevents the dasher' from rotating with respect to its shaft but at the same time permits said dasher to be adjusted vertically according to the size of the body 1. 24 is provided in the lower portion of the shaft and adapted to impinge against the dasher spindle to secure the latter' in an adjusted position.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the invention provides an exceedingly simple, practical and handy device vfor the purpose intended. By providing a cover which may be used in connection with a churn body of any construction and arranging upon it a motor and gearing for driving a dasher shaft, a very convenient and labor saving device is produced. When the dasher is attached to the gearing and the cover is in position upon a churn body the motor may be quickly wound up so that it will operate the gearing and rotate the dasher without care or attention upon the part of an attendant. After the churning has been completed the cover with the dasher attached may be readily lifted off of the body, the dasher may be then removed from its driving shaft to permitit to be effectively cleaned and the cover and motor may be stored away for future use.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
The combination of a circular cover plate for a churn body, spring clips arranged around the edges of the same and adapted to engage the side walls of a churn body to re- At set screw tain the cover plate thereon, a U-shaped bearing bracket arranged centrally on top of the cover plate and having upper and lower arms formed with bearing openings, the lower arm being engaged with the cover plate and formed with apertured attaching ears to receive iastenings which retain the bearing upon the cover plate, a centrally arranged dasher shaft having a tubular lower portion to receive the shank of a dasher, said tubular lower portion being rotatable in the bearing opening in the lower arm of the U- shaped bearing bracket, the upper end of said shaft being reduced and rotatable in the bearing opening in the upper arm of said 15 bearing bracket, a beveled pinion fixed to the shaft between the arms of the bearing bracket, a motor casing fixed to the upper face of the cover plate and having a rotary shaft, and a beveled gear fixed to the motor 20 shaft and in mesh with said pinion.
In testimony whereof I hereunto alix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT E. SHARP.
