Application filed September 30, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. FRANK- LIN, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Austin, in the county of Travis andState of Texas, have invented a new and useful Churn-Dasher, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to churns and has for its object to provide a comparatively simple and thoroughly efficient device of this character by means of which the labor incident to the operation of the churning may be materially decreased.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a dasher including an operating shaft having a supporting ring connected therewith by a plurality of radiating blades one edge of each of which is deflected downwardly and provided with an opening or perforation to permit the passage of milk or cream through the dasher blades.
A further object is to extend one end. of each blade laterally beyond the supporting ring at the base of the latter so as to force the milk or cream against the interior walls of the churn and thus thoroughly agitate the entire contents of the containing vessel.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood. that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the ap pended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a churn constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the dasher removed from the churn body. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the dasher. Fig. 4 is a detail. bottom plan view showing the manner of connecting the dasher with the operating shaft.

The improved churn forming the subject matter of the present invention includes a supporting base 5 having a yoke or frame 6 secured thereto and provided with spaced depending arms 7 to one of which is journaled a transverse operating shaft 8. The operating shaft 8 is also journaled in a suit- Specification of Letters Patent.

able'bearing 9 in one side of the frame or yoke and is provided with a pinion 10 which meshes with a master gear 11 also journaled 011 the yoke or "rame.
Secured to the inner end of the transverse shaft 8 is a beveled gear 12 which meshes with a correspondingly beveled pinion 13, which latter is keyed or otherwise rigidly secured to the main operating shaft 14.
The main operating shaft 14 extends within the liquid. containing receptacle 15 and also within the tubular member 16 of the dasher and to which it is detachably combined. by means of a set screw or similar fastening device 17.
Surrounding the tubular member 16 at a point adjacent the lower end thereof is a single annulus or supporting ring 18 preferably having its upper and lower edges bent or crimped to form annular reinforcing ribs 19.
Extending between the supporting ring 18 and the tubular member 16 are a plurality of integral radiating blades 20 having their intermediate portions deflected downwardly to form semi-circular wings 21 having openings or perforations 22 formed therein to permit the passage of milk or cream through said blades.
The body of the dasher at the juncture of the radiating blades bears against an annular stop shoulder 23 formed on the lower'end of the tubular member and is provided with an elongated slot to permit the passage of suitable clamping fingers 24 carried by said tubular member. 7
Disposed on each side of the slot 25 are cam faces 26 which engage the fingers 24 when the tubular member 16 is partially rotated and serve to clamp the blade in engagement with the shoulder and thus prevent ac cidental displacement of the dasher during the churning operation.
The blades 20 are provided with cut away portions defining stop shoulders 27 which bear against the interior walls of the supporting ring and are soldered. or otherwise rigidly combined therewith.
The terminals of the radiating blades are extended laterally below the churn at the base of the supporting ring to form peripheral projections 28 which serve to agitate the milk or cream and force the same in contact with the interior walls of the containing vessel so as to thoroughly agitate the entire contents of said vessel.
Attention is here called to the fact that the semicircular wings 21 of the radiating blades are arranged entirely within the confines of the supporting ring and are bowed rearwardly with respect to the direction of rotation of the dasher so as to present inclined faces to the material to be agitated.

By orming the dasher with a single supporting ring the inclined wings and terminal projections of the dasher blades are brought into intimate contact with the liquid thus materially increasing the efficiency of the churn and also reducing the labor incident to the churning operation.
The dashers may be made in different sizes and shapes and may be galvanized or otherwise coated to prevent the metal from corroding.
Having thus described the invention What is claimed is:
1. A churn dasher including a tubular member, a supporting ring surrounding said member, radiating blades connecting the ring and tubular member and provided with semi-circular inclined wings having perforations therein, said wings being disposed within the confines of the ring, and projections formed on the blades and extending laterally beyond the exterior walls of the supporting ring at the lower rim of the latter.

A churn dasher including a tubular member, a single supporting ring surrounding the tubular member and having its interior walls smooth and unobstructed and its exterior walls provided with reinforcing ribs, a plurality of radiating blades connecting the supporting ring and tubular member and having their outer ends cut away to produce shoulders adapted to bear against the interior walls of the supporting ring at the lower edge thereof, the terminals of said blades being extended laterally beneath and beyond the exterior walls of the supporting ring at the lower reinforcing rib, and semi-circular enlargements formed integral with the blades between the terminal projections and the tubular member, said wings beingi clined downwardly and provided with openings disposed concentric with the curved walls of said wings.
