INVENTOR "TOR/V5781 Patented Mar. 2, 1909.
'UNiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
FRANKLIN TOMPKINS, OF NEW DORP, NEW YORK.
ao'ranr ENGINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 2, 1909.
Application filed January 2, 1909. Serial No. 470,385. I
a s ification such as will enable those, skiliiail in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to rotary engines,
pumps and other apparatus of this class, and
particularly to a paratus of this class that employs a cylin cal casing in which is eccentrically mounted a rotatable piston member provided with radially movable piston blades; and the object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the class s ecified in which the rotatable member an radially movable blades are so formed as to prevent the cram ing, twisting or locking of the said blades w en in their outermost position or at the limit of their outer movement; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in an apparatus of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the fol.-. lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of myimprovement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the v1ews, and in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a rotary pump casing and inclosed parts made according to my invention; Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and, Fig. 3 a view similar to Fi ,1 but showing a modified arran ement o the rotary member and-piston bla es.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in Figs. 1 and-2, I rovide a cylindrical casing a, one side a 0 which is detachable and in which is eccentrically mounted the rotary member I). The rotary member t in he form of construction shown, is cross-sha ed form or provided with radial arms I)", four of which are shown, and said rotatable member is provided with trunnions b? one of which has a bearing 1) in the detachable side a oi the casing 11, and the other of which passes through the opposite side of said casin and through a stuffing box device a connects therewi and'forms a power shaft 12 with which 1y be connected a'belt or other power transmitting device ofany kind or class. The radial arm members b of the ro tatablepart b are slotted longitudinally as shown at b, and these slots extend through the central portion of the rotary member as clearly shown in Fig. 1, the slots in the opposite arms I; bein in communication through the center of sai rotary member;
Mounted in the slots b in the radial arm members I) are radially movable blades 0, and these blades are provided at their opposite side edges and adjacent to their inner faces with side trunnions c movable in concentric grooves 0 formed in the ends or oppo-.
site side portions of the casing a, said grooves being formed around the central axis of said chamber and concentric therewith, while the trunnions of the rotary member b are eccentric to said axis. With thisconstruction, it will be seen, that as the member b rotates the blades 0 are given a radial movement and in one position of the rotary member I), or at one point of its rotation, the blades 0 are almost entirely pro'ected from the radial arms or arm members 2 of said rotary member as clearly shown at the bottom of Figs. 1 and 2, and in order to prevent the blades 0 in'this position from cramping, twistin or locking by reason of their contact wit walls of the cylindrical casing, I provide the inner edges or faces of saidblades with parallel projecting members or fingers of which pass through the central portion of the rotary member I) in the radial movement of said blades, and these projecting members or fingers c on the blades 0 are soarranged that the said members or fingers on two opposite blades 0 interlock when said blades are in their innermost position, while the projecting fin ers or members 0 on the other two blades 0 a so interlock Whensaid blades are in their innermost position, and the fingers or members c of one pair of blades cross the fingers or members 0 of the other pair of blades as clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.
It will be uiiderstood, of course, that the fingers or members 0 of the blades 0 strengthen and brace said blades when in their outermost position and prevent the same from cramping, looking or twisting bethe inner and claimed in an application for Letters Patent of the United States filed by me Feb. 18, 1908, Serial No. 416,512 which application was allowed Dec. 8, 1908, and the casing a is provided at its opposite sides with inlet and outlet ports or passages d and d through which steam is admitted to and escapes from the said casing.
My invention is not limited to the exact form of the rotary member 6 herein shown and described, and this rotary member may be formed in the same manner as in the application above referred to, or as sometimes formed in other a paratus of this class, and it is immaterial whether the rotary member be mounted on, or forms a party of a shaft, all that is necessary in any construction of this kind being that the radially movable blades 0 be mounted in radial recesses which extend through the center of the rotary member in order that the fingers or members 0 on the blades 0 may have sufiicient play in said rotary member to accommodate the operation of said blades.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modification in which a casing e is employed, said casing consisting of two cylindrical parts 6 which are in communication at e and in each of which is mounted a rotary member f having radial projections f which interlock as shown at f in the operation of the apparatus. general form of this apparatus is one which is old and Well known, but with my improvement the radially projecting parts f of the rotary member f are provided, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, with the radially movable blades 0 having the trunnionsc movable in the concentric grooves 0 and said blades are provided as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 with parallel projecting members or fingers c at 'their inner edges or faces which pass through the central portions of said radial members in the operation of the apparatus and as will be readily understood from the description of the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and with this or these exceptions the apparatus shown in Fig. 3 will be constructed in a manner similar to others of its class.
In practice, I also provide the trunnions c of the blades 0 with anti-friction, bearings g which are free to turn on said trunnions with in the grooves 0 and these bearings are shown in section in Fig. 2 and indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
My invention is not limited to the exact details of the construction of the rotary member and the radially movable blades mounted therein as herein shown and described, and various changes in and modifications of this construction may be made, in view of the appended claims,-without departing from the Thespirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an apparatus of the class described, a cylindrical casing, a rotary member mounted eccentrically therein and provided withradially movable blades, said radially movable blades being mounted in recesses which extend through the center of the rotary member, and said blades being provided at their inner edges with projecting fingers or mem bers which move radially through the cen* tral portion of the rotary member in the operation of the apparatus, the fingers or members of opposlte blades inter-locking,
and the fingers or members of blades arranged at an angle to each other crossing eachother during said operation.
2.' In an apparatus of the class described, a cylindrical casing the opposite sides or ends of which are provided with concentric grooves, a rotary member eccentrically mounted in said casing and provided with radially movableblades having trunnions movable in said grooves, said blades being mountcdin radial recesses formed in the ro,
tary member and passing through the center thereof, and the inner edges of said blades being provided with projecting portions which move through the central portion of the rotary member in the operation of said apparatus.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, a cylindrical casing the opposite sides or ends of which are provided with concentric grooves, a rotary member eccentrically mounted in said casing and. provided with radially movable blades having trunnions movable in said grooves, said blades being mounted in radial recesses formed in the rotary member and passing through the center thereof, and themner edges of said blades being provided with projecting portions which move through the central portion of the rotarymember in the operation of said apparatus in such manner that the projecting portions of opposite blades interlock, and
the projecting portions or blades arranged at an angle to each other cross each other in said operation.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this- 31st day of December 1908.
