APPLIOATION FILED PHIL-3, 1913.

WITNESSES:
' bearing between 11 l gl l fig ecification Letters Patent.
all whom it may concern it known that I, Ismail J. Jonuson, a :i mi of the United Statenresiding at Red ing in the county of Shasta and State of ali ornia, have invented new and useful znproveinen'ts in Rotary Pumps, of which he following is a specification.
This invention relates to a rotary pump.
It is the object of this invention to provide a rotary pump of the type in which a revolubie drum carrying blades is mounted eccentrically in a cylinder casing having inlet and outlet ports.
The principal object of this invention is to provide'means for obviating rubbing contact between the blades and casing, and to provide means for preventing noise caused by the blades passing; over the division be tween the intake and discharge openings of the casing. Y
A further object is to provide a rotary pump which is simple in construction and positive in its action.-
Further objects will appear hereinafter. The invention primarily resides in a drum revolubly mounted in the cylinder ofthe casing, eccentric thereto, a series of divided blades or vanes extending diani'etri city through the drum with spring members the divisions of the blades, rollers adjacent the outer ends of the blades, and track or runway in the casing: on which the rollers travel to furnish a rolling contact between the blades and the casing.
The invention further consists ot the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accomi g drawings, in which Figure 1 1s a vertical longitudinal section of the invention taken on the line XX of 2. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the liueY-J? of Fig. 1, partly in elevation. F'g. 3 is a detail elevational view of the drum with parts broken away.
In the drawings A represents the pump casing which is formed with a cylindrical interior which communicates with an intake opening 2 and a discharge opening 3 through segmental channels or passages 4,
formed in the casing A. The intake and discharge openings 2 and 3 are separated by means o1".- a wall or partition 5 which terminates at its inner end adjacent the cylindrical interior of the casing. The segmental channels 4 leading from the intake and discharge openings 2 and 3 extend approximately three-fourths around the cylindrical interior of the casing A, as shown in Fig. 1.
ll'lounted in suitable bearings 6 carried in hubs 7 formed on the casing 44, is a shaft 8 which extends through the cylindrical interior of the casing A, eccentric to the axis thereof. Rigidly mounted on the shaft- 8 within the casing A, is a hollow drum or cylinder 9, which is formed of quadrants secured together by means of face plates 10, as shown in Fig". 3, which face plates are bolted to the end faces off the quadrants. The cylinder or drum 9 is of such diameter that its outer periphery will be in sliding contact with the inner wall of the casing A. at a point adjacent to the inner end of the partition The quadrants forming the cylinder 9 are spaced a short distance apart to form diametrically opposed slots 11 extend h s; transversely ot the perimeter of the drum, the full width thereof. ,Mouuted in the drum, and extending through the slots 11 is a pair oi blades or vanes, each of which is torn-led of two connected parts 12 and 12. The blades 1212 are of such length that their outer ends will almost contactthe surface of the cylindrical interior of the casing A, as shown in Fig. 1, and the portions 12 of the blades are bentoutwardly at 12 to pass alongside of the shaft 8.
The connection between the portions 12 and 12 of the blades consists of a tongue 1? formed on, the portion .2, which extends into a slotor groove 14. formed on the portion 12. The tongue 13 and the slot 14: cx tend the full width of the blades.
Mounted within the portions 12 of the blades, in recesses formed in the slotted ends thereof, are helical expansile springs 15, which hour between shoulders on the portions 12 of the blades and the inner ends of notches formed in the tongues 13 on the portionslZ ot' the blade, in such manner as to normally retain the ends of the blades in their outcrn'iost position. A sutlicicut space is provided between the connected ends of the blade portions 12 and 12' to allow them through either of the ports 2 to have a slight movement toward each other when the blades contact and ride over the cndmf the partition 5, as will be later described.
The outer ends of the blades 12*12 are cut away on their end edges to form oilsets, in which rollers 16 are n'iounted; the rollers 16 being revoluble upon bushings 17 carried by studs 18 formed on the edgesof the blades 12-12, as shown in Fig. 2. The outer faces of the rollers 16 slidably contact the end blades of the casing A. The peripheries of the roller 16 extend av short distance beyond the ends of the blades 1212 and are adapted to travel upon the pehiphcral walls of the cylindrical chamber in the casing, A; the walls of the cylinder thus forming a runway or track for the rollers.
Formed in the drum 9 at the ends of the slots 14, are recesses 19 into which the rollers it pass when the outer ends of the l'iladcs 12 12 are disposed in their innermost position in relation to the drum 9. A substantial, durable construction is obtained by extending the blades 12-12 through the drum and forming them with oilset portions 12 to clear the shaft 8. The sha'l t 3 may thus extend entirely through the drum 9 and be supported in the bear ings tt on each side of the drum; the portions 12 of the blades being cut away so that. tlu: blades may cross each other at right angles, as shown in Fig. l.
in the opeintion oi the invention, the shaft 8 is rotated by means o'l" any suitable source of power, to rotate the drum 9 within the casing A.) The rotation of the 'drum 9 causes the blades 'l2-l2 to rotate there with; the rollers 16 on the outer ends o't' the blades traveling on the inner wall of the cylindrical ehan'il'ier formed in the easing A, and acting to hold the ends of the blades 12-42 out of contact with the casing A, and at the same time form a roll ing bearing for the end thrust of the blades. due to centrifugal force. The blades 1212 in rotating with the drum 9 are caused to have a reciprocal movement in relation to the latter, and are thus caused to ride back and forth in the slots 11. hen the ends of the blades in moving around with the drum 9', strike the partition 5, they are slightly compressed lengthwise in opposition to the springs 15, thus silencing the impact of the blades on the partition 5. The blades in rotating, act to draw liquid into the pump through the intake opening 2 in the manner common in rotary pumps, and advance it around the interior of the casing l/\ and d'iscl'iarge it through the discharge opening 3. v I
It is manifest that the pump may be :lriven in either direction to discharge or 3. By extending the channels 4 to open into the crescent-shaped space between the drum 9 and the casing A at a point where the decrease of the sectional area of the space is slight, the full working capacity of the blades is obtained, both in drawing the liquid into the pump casing and discharging ittherefrom.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a rotary pump, a casing having im interior periphery formed on arcs of dif t'crent adii, parallel contiguous inlet and discharge passages in the larger periphery, with a dividing septum, a drum having an axis intermediate of the axes of the casing, pistons extending through radial channels in the drum, and guides coincident with the smaller arc of the casing, whereby the pistons are held in operative contact with said smaller arc of theca-sing opposite the inlet and discharge and are carried free from the remainder of the casing during'rotati'on.
2. A rotary pump having parallel, con- :iguous inlet and discharge passages at one side of the periphery, with an intermediate :cptum, a channeled crescent-shaped interior portion, the sidewalls of which have the same radius with the smaller arc of the easing which is located opposite to the inlet and di:-:(.-harge passages, a sectional hollow drum revoluble Within the casing, having its axis intermediate of the axes of the casing, and pistons slidable in slots at right angles through'the drum, said pistons having rollers journaled in their ends and adapted to travel on the side walls of the crescent and maintain operative contact between the outer edges of the pistons and the' smaller casing surface.
A casing for rotary pumps having its interior periphery formed of cylindrical arcs of dittcrent radii, parallel contiguous inlet and outlet passages connecting with the larger are, a rotary piston carrying drum journaled Within the casing and havlng an axis difierent from those of the casing, pistons slidable radially through the drum, and a crescent-shaped guide therefor within the easing having its thicker portion coinciding with the larger arc of the casing and its interior curvature of the same radius and continuous with the smaller arc of the casin 4. a rotary pump of the character described, a casing with its interior periphery in arcs of different radii, crescent-shaped guides, the curvature and the terminating horns of which are continuous with the smaller are of the casing, parallel, contiguou's inlet and outleta-ssages through the opposite periphery-of the casing, a drum within the casing having a continuous shaft 3,97%326 g3, jom naied nutsideof the casing 6116s, and my hand in the presence 03? two: subscribing plstons shdable at rlght angles through the Witnesses;
