JOHN G. BRONAUGH, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
STAGE BORDER-LIGHT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN C. Bnonancn, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stage Border- Lights, of which the following is a spcciiica tion.
This invention relates to stage border lights and my object is to produce a structure of this character which is thoroughly fireproof in which the lamps are protected from breakage by moving scenery or other cause, and which can be easily and quickly secured in or removed from operative position.
A further object is to produce a border light containing a plurality of lamps to one or more of which easy and quick access may be had for repair or other purposes.
WVith these objects in view and others as hereinafter appear, the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and organization as hereinafter described and claimed. and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a front view of a stage border light embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is an enlarged vertical cross section of the same, on line IIII of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a top plan View of one end of the same with the cover Omitted. Fig. 1, is a perspective view of a part of the body portion of the structure. Fig. 5, is a perspective view of a part of the cover of the structure. Fig. 6, is an enlarged vertical section of a part of the structure in the lane of one of the hangers. Fig. 7, is a sim' ar view in the plane of one of the hinge brackets for the guard.
Before proceeding with a detailed description it should be stated that this border light is intended primarily as a proscenium arch light, that is a light which is supported at or near the top of the arch at the stage side of the same.
In the said drawings a sheet metal angle plate in length greater than the width of the arch by preference, com )rises the vertical arm 1 and the horizonta arm 2, the lower end of the former terminating in a sti'll'ening flange 3. The forward edge of arm 2 is doubled back upon itself to form a stiffening bead 4. The arm 2 is formed with a U- Specification of Letters Patent.

shaped depression 5 for its full length and at the upper edges and opposite ends of the depression is formed with incisions 6.
7 indicates inclined braces bolted between said arms, the lower ends of the braces being bolted as at 8 to arm 1 and their upper ends as at 9 to arm 2 forward of its depressed portion 5.
10 indicates substantially right angle shaped hangers having their horizontal arms projecting forward and bolted at 11 to arm 2, and provided with arched portions 12 over the depressed portion 5. A cover of sheet metal comprises a plurality of sections 13 of inverted-U sha )e in cross section, these sections being ongitudinally alined and conjointly equal in length to the angle plate. They lit over and upon the arched portions 12 of the hangers and terminate in horizontal flanges 14 which rest upon the portions of arm 2, at opposite sides of the depressed portions 5 of said arm and arebolted to said arm at 15. In vertical alinement with the hangers the cover sections are stamped upward to provide grooves 16 to receive and accommodate the hangers and at its outer ends the cover composed of said sections is provided with incisions 17 registering with incisions 6.
18 indicates a cap closing the ends of the longitudinal passages formed by and between the depressed portion 5 and arched portions 13 of the cover, said cap having flanges 19 projecting into the incisions 6 and 17, bottom flanges 20 underlying the de pressed portion 5 and riveted thereto at 21, and top illanges 22, which underlie the ends of the arched portion of the cover. One of said caps is provided with a pair of openings 23 to receive eyelets 24 of porcelain or equivalent material through which the electric feed wires 25 extend, said wires being conneeted in the usual or any preferred manner to incandescent lamp sockets 26 secured to and depending through the depressed portion 5 of the angle plate, said sections being equipped with incandescent lamps 27.
A still wire guard 28 of substantially right angle form in end view is inverted with respect to the angle plate and secured to the latter so as to protect the lamps from injury from any cause, the lower edge of the guard i being secured to metal hooks 29 extending through the angle plate and secured thereto by spring cotters 30, the upper edge of the guard being secured to angle shaped hooks 31 depending through arm 2 of the angle plate and riveted at 32 to arm 2.
The structure is supported at the desired height in any suitable manner, the preferred method of supporting it being to form the hangers with eyes 34 at their upper ends to receive the lower ends of supporting cables 35, the cable being upheld by any suitable means not shown which will permit of the quick and easy lowering of the structure to Within convenient reach of a person on the stage. As such means for supporting the cable is old and well known it has not been illustrated or described.
In the event of the breakage of a filament of a lamp or lamps, the structure can be easily lowered. The spring cotters 30 are then withdrawn to permit the wire guard to be swung outward to give access to the dead lamp or lamps, the guard being resecured in position quickly and easily. If it is necessary to obtain access to the passage containing the electric wires and sockets at any particular point, the overlying cover section is removed by simply removing the securing bolts 15. After the diiliculty is remedied the cover section is rebolted in position. It will be seen that the removal of one or more of the sections of the cover may be effected and that practically any other repair may take place without disengaging the structure from the supporting cables and that for this reason repairs can be made easily and quickly and economically.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a fireproof border light for stages embodying the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of invention and I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be restricted to the exact details of construction and organization shown and described as various modifications will suggest themselves to one skilled in the art.
