This invention refers to improvements in means for illumination, particularly the interior of buildings such as stores, and is of the type generally known as concealed light- Ihe present invention involves improvements in construction of the mounting of the iluminating lamp in relation to a vertical cavity forming a portion of a supporting column, and is incidental to the general scheme of illumination disclosed in my copending applications Serial No. 487,254, and Serial No. 487,255, filed herewith.
The particular object in view is to provide means for mounting a lamp, in connection with an enclosing coping or shell positioned in proper operative relation to the accompanying elements of both horizontal and vertical panel-enclosed light distributing cavities, as shown in said applications.
The lighting element or lamp is located at the upper end of a vertical corner space of a column or the like, for projection of the light rays downwardly through the vertical corner cavity within and behind appropriate cornice members of the architecture whereby the con fined area of the cavity is utilized for diffusion of light rays through a series of removable corner panels of glass or the like, for lateral illumination of an adjacent space.
The construction here illustrated is in the manner above suggested and in connection with a supporting column, or a corner portion thereof, and in convenient operative relation to upper laterally and diver-gently arranged illuminating cavities having rear reflecting surfaces and outer enclosing panels, the end wall of one such reflector being preferably utilized as a mounting base for the lamp socket.

Referring to Fig. 1, 2 represents a main ceiling area of a circumscribed rectangular or other suitable form within surrounding downwardly projecting cross beams 3 extending at right angles from the top ofa supporting post or column 4.
Such column is substantially rectangular in cross section at its base, composed of any suitable interior weight-supporting elements, surrounded by flat or otherwise shaped panels, and with the upper portion of the column designed and'constructed whereby to provide for the mounting therein of the removable panels 5a which cover and enclose the interior vertical well or cavity 6.
Such cavity is of any suitable construction, having a maximum cross sectional area at its upper portion for a certain distance downwardly and then off-set, for area diminution toward the bottom, as may be desired.
As shown in said companion applications the vertical cavity 6 communicates at its up per portion with corresponding longitudinal laterally extending cavities within and behind the cornice construction of ceiling beams 3 which are provlded with a plurality of lamps behind the series of horizontally arranged panels 50, and in front of rear reflecting walls 7, indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, such reflecting walls being fixedly incorporated within and behind the horizontally arranged panels 50 of the beam cornices.
The column 4 above its main generally rectangular base portion is covered with a series of flat panels extending upwardly throughout the middle portion of the column against the adjacent edge 8 of the main wall construction, and forming an extension of an inner sheet metal lining or back wall member 12 which is held in place within the column construction by any suitable means.
Back wall 12 is provided with a rear diagonally arranged flat base portion 12a extending vertically for a suitable distance along the rear portion of cavity 6, the casing or lining member being also preferably utilized as a reflecting surface for the light rays of a lamp A.
Such lamp is mounted in a suitable receiving socket 13 which is fixedly attached by securing plate 14 to theend wall 15 of sheet metal reflector 7, by screws 16 or other suitable means.
The conductor wires 17 are introduced through the center of the socket in the usual manner, leading from any available source of current.
For the purpose of surrounding the lamp A and confining all of the light rays so as to deflect them downwardly through cavity 6, I utilize a cylindrical shell 18 having an upper domeshaped or concaved reflecting top 19 forming a top closure thereof.
The lower portion of the casing 18 is provided with a downwardly extending vertically adjustable cylindrical extension 20, in telescoping engagement with casing 18, adapted to be fixedly secured thereto by tight cning and loosening screws 21, operating through suitable slotted vertical openings 21a in the extension, as in Fig. 4, for adjustment upwardly or downwardly as desired. By such adjustment the divergence of the light rays from lamp A may be regulated with regard to the reflecting wall 12a and the panels 5a and 5b.
The casing 18 is fixedly mounted against diagonal wall 12a by means of a post 22, as shown in Fig. 4. Said post is welded or otherise secured against the outer side of casing 18, as at 23, and extends downwardly within and against the inner face of wall 12a, to which it is secured in any suitable manner, as by rivets or screws 24. An abutment 25 of post 22 rests upon the upper edge of wall 1266, by which construction the casing-18 is fixedly maintained in position.
The side of casing 18, adjacent to socket 13, hasan opening 26, through which the lamp A may be passed for insertion in socket 13, the lamp being introduced upwardly through the sufliciently large opening of casing 18 and its extension 20, and opening 26, one or more of the corner panels 5a having been previously removed.
The construction above described provides apermanent and fixedly operative mounting for the lamp and its reflecting and directing casing, at the upper portion of the vertical cavity 6, readily accessible and providing for easy manipulationand removal or insertion of the several parts, with facility for cleaning or polishing of interior surfaces, as will be readily understood.
As thus arranged, the elements utilized c0- operate in a highly satisfactory and eflicient manner, and contribute materially to the general illuminating eflect of the entire construction.
Having described my invention, what I claim is V 1. In combination with an upper support and a lower adjacent columnar construction having a vertical corner cavity provided with an inner vertical back wall and outer translucent panels, a lamp socket mounted on the upper support, a lamp therein, and a closed top reflecting casing surrounding the lamp and mounted on the vertical back wall. provided with an adjustable telescoping lower extension adapted to control divergence oflight rays againstthe back wall and the outer panels.
2. In combination with an upper support and a lower adjacent columnar construction having a vertical corner cavity provided with 1 an inner vertical back walland outer translucent'panels, a lamp socket mounted on the upper support, a lamp therein, a cylindrical reflecting casing provided with a top surrounding the lamp mounted on the vertical back wall and provided with a lower adj ustable telescoping extension and a vertical slot, and a securing screw extending through said slot, whereby the extension may be located at varying distances with relation to the lamp for limiting divergence of light rays against the back wall and the outer panels.
3. In combination with a vertical longitudinally hollow columnar construction providing a corner cavity within an inner vertical back wall and outer translucent angular panels and a lamp mounted at the top thereof, an arm secured to and extending upwardly from the back wall, a closed top reflecting casing surrounding, the lamp and secured. to
said arm and provided with a downwardly extending skirt adapted to control divergence of light rays against the back wall and the panels. 7
4. In combination with a vertical longitudinally hollow columnar construction providing a corner cavity within an inner vertical back wall and outer translucent angular panels and a lamp mounted at the top thereof, an arm secured to and extending upwardly from the back .wall, a closed top reflecting casing surrounding the lamp and secured to said arm and provided with a downwardly extending skirt provided with an adjustable telescoping lower-extension adapted to control divergence of light rays against the back wall and the panels.
