ILLUMINATED HOUSE NUMBER Filed March 22f 1927 /ffs 5596,45; v

Voluired to complete the Patented May 8, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NELS IBERGN, 0F RACINE, WISCONSIN.
ILLUMINATED HoUsE NUMBER.
Application led March 22, 1927. Serial No. 177,398.
My invention relates to improvements in house numbers of thatl character designed to be afiixed to dwellings and illuminated electrically from within by appliances readily ncontrolled for lighting the number when de- .Fig 3; Fig. 5, a detail section taken on the dotted line 5-5 in Fig. 3; Fig. 6, a perspective of a numbering card or panel which I employ; and Fig. 7, is a detail sectional view taken on the dotted line 7-7 in Fig. 3.
In said drawing 5 indicates the number containing section of the casing, which embodies atop, 6, having a grooved flange, 7 along its rear edge. The front wall, 8 of the casing is inclined inwardly, and formed with an outwardly projecting or offset rim, 10, the lower end of' the wall being provided with ears or clips, 11. Within therim 1t) I position outer and inner transparent plates, 12, 12', which may be of glass, and, between which plates are placed the required numbered panels, 13, the numerals being preferably cut therethrough. As the cards or panels are individually numbered it will be understood that any combination of numerals can be assembled to produce a desired total number, and blank fillers, 14, may be used to fill the space between plates 12, 12', according to the lesser or greater number of panels-rehouse number. Within each side of the wall 8 I secure suitable keepers, 15, which may be adjusted to retain the plates 12, 12', in the casing, and to be disengaged from said plates when it is desired to insert and change figures or complete numbers. l
The back Wall section, 20, which constitutes part of the casing, embodies an up er and a lower fiange 21, 22, and is provided with screw holes, 23, through which, and projections 24 (Fig. 4) at the rear side thereof, screws 25 are inserted for securing saidback wall 20 to a building, 26, or other support, so that the same will stand away from the building to provide Ventilating space. On the inner side of said back wall I attach a lamp holder, 27, of spring material in which a commercial electric lamp, 28, is secured, the cord, 29, running therefrom passing through an insulator, 30, which is held in a socket, 3l, secured to the back plate or wall by a nut, 32. It will be understood, of course, that the building wall is bored, as at 33, through which the insulator 30 and cord 29 are passed, and in which the socket 31 is inserted, the insulator being fixedly held in position by a screw follower, 34, in a well known manner.
When the back wall 20 has been installed substantially as shown in Fig. 5, the outer casing 5 may be readily attached thereto by fitting the grooved flange 7 thereof upon the upper flange 21 of the back wall, which properly alines these elements, and their bending theV clips or ears 'l1 about the lower flange 22 of the back wall, which unifies the structure into the triangular shape indicated in Figs. 1 and 5. It will be observed that the back wall 20 is provided with openin s, 35, which, in connection with the space tween saidwall andthe structure to which it vis secured, provide means for Ventilating the interior of the house number from the atmosphere. It will be also understood that the lamp 28 can be controlled by a switch communicating with the wires, 36 ofthe cord 29, to be readily lighted and extinguished as desired, or a common and well known plug 29 may be employed.
In the manner disclosed I provide an illaminated house number of simple construction comprising but two sections, which may be readily installed, removed and repaired or changed with slight effort and skill, and the back wall 2O thereof being composed of polished metal acts as a reflector to project the light through the cut figures in the inclined' front walll of the casing, which inclination serves to throw the light downwardly and the discernment of the figures thus facilitated.
I claim as my invention:
1..In an illuminated house number, a wall, means for securing said wall to a building, a number containing casing embodying a grooved flange adapted to detachably-engage the upper end of said wall, said casin having a horizontal top and a down-y ward y inclined front wall, means at the lowerside of said casing for clamping the same to said Wall, a socket 1n the Wall, a lamp in said casmg energizing means for 'said lamp connected thereto and passing through said socket, and means associated with said energizing means adapted to be secured to a source of electrical energy.
2. In an illuminated house number, a flanged wall, means for securing the Wall to a building, a number containing 4casing embodying a downwardly inclined transparent number bearing wall,.said easing having a flange detachably connecting the upper end of the casing to said flanged Wall, clips on the lower end of the casinor adapted to be attached about the lower end` of said flanged wall for securing the casing to the wall, a lamp holder in the casing, a lamp detachably secured to the holder, a socket on said wall, an insulator in said socket, a cord connected to the lamp and passing through said insulator, and a fixture secured to the cord for connecting the latter to a source of electrical energy.
3. In an illuminated house number, a wall flanged at its upper and lower sides, a number containing casing embodying a grooved flange adapted to detachably engage the upper flange of said wall, means at the lower end of the casing for cla'mpmg the same to the lower flange of the Wall, trans-v 'for detachably securing the lower 'ends of said sections, means for vsecuring the casing in spaced relation to a building, an illuminating lamp in the Casing, a cord connected to the lamp, means connected to the wall section through which said cord passes into the interior of' a building, andl means connected to the cord for detachably securing the same to a source of electrical energy.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature,
NELS BERGAN.
