UNITED STATES EDWARD SMITH, 0F BUFFALO, NEW YORK.'
113LUMINATIEIDINi'DICATOIB. DEVICE.
Application illed September 25, 1922. Serial No. 590,459.
To all whom t may concer/n.' f
Be it known that I, EDWARD SMITH, a citizen of the United States, yresidin'gat Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Illuminated-Indioator Devices, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relatesto an illuminated indicator preferably adapted for speciic application to residences and other uildings, whereby the identification numbers thereof may be visible at all times.
The primary object of the invention is the revision of a relatively smplle and compact illuminatednumber plate, w ich embodies a novel numeral positioningr arrangement.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above mentioned character, which is adapted for application to a supporting frame -or casing in suc manner that the various parts thereof will be compactly seated within y a f socket provided in the supporting casing.
i Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description. n p
f in the accompanying drawing, forming a art of this specification, and wherein similar yreference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 1s a.' front elevation of the improved illuminated indicatmg device.
Figure 2 is a transverse cross sectionaly view, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figur-e 1. y y
Figure 3 is a transverse cross sectional view, taken thi-(nigh. a frame arrangement embodied in this invention.
Figure @i is a transverse crossl sectional view, taken through certain details of this invention,- showing the specific application ef a diaphanous yplate member `through a casin lngthe drawing, whereinV fer the 'purpose of illustration is shown but the "preferred embodiment of this invention, the letter A indicates the improved illuminated identicaton device, which vmore specifically comprises a casing B'' indicia C; frame D;
and illuminating lmeans E.
The housing arrangement B preferabl includes a casing 10 which may be. .of meta lic construction and of rectangular formation, including the end walls 11 and 12, and
the side walls 13 and 14. A bottom plate 15 may be provided, and the entire top of the casing left open as vaccess to thev chamber 16 defined by the walls and bottom ofthe casing 10. Lugs 18 and A19 preferably extend outwardly at right angles from the' end walls 11 and 12.respectively, said lugs 18 and 19 preferably being disposed at the top marginal edges of said end walls and having openings 21 provided theiethrou'gh'for ceivmg attaching screws or like elements yIn the mounting of the improved casing 10 toa casing or other supporting structure 25, the latter is provided with a socket or pocket opening 26 into which the casing 10 fits with the top surfaces 27 of the lugs 18 and 19 preferably lying flush with the top surface 28 of the structure 25.
A transparent or diaphanous plate 30 is h preferably provided, which may be supportedlin the openingy of the casing 10 so that the Atop surface 31 thereof lies flush with the top surfaces'27f of the casing lugs 18 and 19, substantially as is illustrated 1n Figure 2 of the drawing. This late 30 may be supported in the o eningo the casing l() as by strips 32` T ree4 of the strips 32 may be provided, one of'them attached as by screw members 33 to the central portion y of the end wall 11,- and the other two strips 32 being attached to the side walls 13 and 14 directly opposite each other adjacentl the end wall 10. The top edgesof these. strips 32 extend inwardly of the casingfchainberl 16 for receiving the transparent plate 30 thereon.
The numerals 35 are referably included as part of the identification arrangement each of said numerals 35 having Vupper and lower tongues 36 extending therefrom.y
be of any material and is preferably of rectangular formation,y providing a peripheral groove 38' inwardly of the facing edges of the side and end strips 39 and 40 respectively of the frame. The end strips 39 may have` certain openings 41 extending transversely therethrough 'for receiving screw elements 42, or the like, which are adapted for screw threaded insertion into certain sockets 45 rovided in the casin juncture o the lugs 18 and19 terewith;
The box or casing 10 having be'enassein-v bled in its socket 26 of the door or other supporting construction 45, the numerals 35 are Referring to the frame D, the same Vmay 10, at the,
positioned over the diaphanous plate 30, soV
` 42 above mentioned, the tongues 36 will be clamped intermediate the frame B and the 4 plate member 30, so that the-numerals 35 will be rigidly positioned to provide an identification of the building upon which the improved device A is mounted. The inside and outside edges 47 and 48 of the frame strips 39 and 4 0 maybe bevelled, substantially as is illustrated in the drawin Referring'to the lilluminating means the same preferably includesva socket member 51, which may be detachably positioned within the chamber 16 of the casing 10 upon an end Wall 12 thereof, asby the screw members 52; th'e same being adapted for receiving anelectric'bulb 53, or the like, which is of an elongated formation and extends longitudinally within the chamber `16. The lead wires 53 may extend through an insulated bushing 54 provided in the casing bottom 15. c From theforegoing description of this invention, it canbe seen that an improved illuminated number plate has been provided, which is simple in 4construction, and so compactly arranged that the same may be 'of practical` application to supporting con-` or housing attaching elementsA 22, said frame throng lthe recess of said support with the lugs overalso 'cooperating in `accurately vpositioning and supporting thein'dicating numerals 35.
Various changes in the shape, size and arrangementfof parts may be made to the form (if the invention herein shown and de-y scribed, without departing from the spirit of'thisinvention or the scope of the claims.
I claim: f
