JOHN H. MORSE, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND HENRY W. WELLS, OI" SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 91,359, dated June 15, 1869; antedated May 28, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN PERMUTATION-LOCKS.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part of the sama.
To all whom'tt ma/y concern Be it known thatI, JOHN H. MORSE, of Peoria, county of Peoria, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safe-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description lof' the same, reference being had to the accompanying dl'awings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. l
Figure 1 is a perspective view of back of lock, with the back-plate removed.
Figure 2 is a sectional View of said lock.
Figure 3 represents the changeable wheel A,with its rim L.
Figure 4 represents a sectional view of rim L of wheel A.
Figure 5, sectional views of the nut or core B, with movable pin t.
Figure 6, lever J.
Figure 7, an edge view of same.
Figure 8, the adjustable nut D, and sectional view of same. l
Figure 9, dial O, showing the unequal cuts and spaces.
My improvement consists in providing the inner end of spindle O, that passes through the door of a safe or vault, with a changeable wheel, A, for the purpose of disconnecting the lng-bar N, and the slotted tumblers or wheels E F G, in a safe-lock.
Also, in placing a friction-Wheel, h, on rim L of wheel A, and in placing the lever J in such a position that the friction-wheel' h coming in contact with it,
(the bolt R Rbeingattached to said lever by the stud.
s, this stud s Sliding in the slot x in lever J the bolt R R will he turned into position shown by fig. 1.
In the present position of lever J, the wheel A may be revolved, and the friction-wheel It not come in contact with it; but if the bolt B R is thrown up, as show n in red dotted lines, fig. 1, the friction-wheel h, in passing around, will strike the lever J, (see dotted line, fig. 1,) and force the bolt back again into position shown.
The wheel A consists of three parts: the body, the nut or core B, and the rim L.
The nut B, figs. 2 and 5, is secured upon the spindle O at f.' (See g. 2.)
Ou this nut B the wheel A revolves, iig. 3, the nut B forming its core.
Through this nut B or corea number of holes, c c, are drilled. (See ig. 5.) In the wheel Acne hole is drilled, through which passes the screw fm, (sce figs. 1
and 3,) into one of the holes in the core B, securing the wheel A and c'ore B together.
The wheel A has a rim, L. (See fig. 3.) In the outer edge of it a slot, e, is cut, andnearly opposite, on the face of said rim, the friction-wheel h is secured by a screw, upon which it revolves, `ligs. 1 and 3.
The body of spindle O is formed thus Beginning at g, (see iig. 2, dotted lines,) the spindle is about seven-eighths of an inch in diameter; running toward the end Z, itis straight for one-quarter of an inch, to o then an offset with a receding cut, forming a sharp cutting-edge; then tapers one-quarter ofan inch, to s then straight one-quarter of an inch, to o then another receding cut, and so on, until three or four of these receding cutting-edges o o o are formed (See fi 2.
gWh)en an attempt to drive in the spindle O is made, these cutting-edges o o o will out into the soft iron of the safe-door, and close it around the taper part of spindle at s s s, and prevent the said spindle from r being driven inor wedged in the door.
To change the wheel A, or set it on some other hgure on the dial, turn the dial or knob O until the slot e in rim L, (see iig. 1,) comes directly under the lug u, with its rubber-tired friction-wheel a on lug-bar N. (See iigs. 1 and 2.)
Now take the screw m halfway out, hold the wheel A securely with the lingers of the left hand, turn the dial C with the right hand, until the gure selected to set it on is noted by the dial O. Put in the screw m, and the point of said screw will enter one of the holes c e in core B, and secure them together. The po sition of the slot e will now be noted by the dial O at the cut, t, on rim H. (See iig. 9.)
The working of the changeable wheel A is as follows:
The friction-wheel a, with its rubber tire, runs upon the rim L of wheel A, (see lig. 1,) keeping the lug p (see fig. 1) on lng-bar N, from coming in contact with slotted wheels E F G, except when the slot e in rim L is passing the rubber-tired friction-wheel a. This prevents the mapping ont of slotted wheels E F G, and finding the slots k. (See fig. l.)
The rubber on friction-wheel a prevents sound or noise as the wheel A is revolved, and the slot epasses the wheel a.
In working the lock, much depends upon knowing the position of slot e in rim L of wheel A.
The holt It R is withdrawn by the lug fn, with its rubber-tired friction-wheel a, dropping into said slot e, by turning the dial O, (the slotted wheels E F G being in position to receive the lug 11,) (see fig. 1,) and theV operator, not knowing the position of slot e, in turning the dial O, in an attempt to find its position, may withdraw the holt R, and bring the friction-wheel h, on rim L of wheel A, against the lever J, and force the bolt R back again into position, or lock it.
To adjust the spindle O to doors not of the same thickness, take out the screw d, and take oli' the cap, D. (See figs. 1 and 8.) And the said spindle may be lengthened or shortened by holding the wheel A in the lingers of the left hand, and screwing up or unscrewing the spindle O, as may be required. Put on the cap, and secure it to th`e core B with the screw d.
The cap, D, with its screw d, is used to hold the wheel A securely on the spindle O, and prevent its unserewing from the core B, thereby changing the position of the dial O and changeable wheel A, or withdrawing the spindle, and leaving a hole in the door.
The dial O is laid ofi` into unequal cuts and spaces, for preventing the working out of the combination on which the lock may be locked with a michrometer, or other machine which bnrglars use.
The hand and eye will work to cuts and spaces on the dial O, without regard to their irregularity, while a machine with teeth and pinions will not.
