ALICE OSBORNE BRIGANCE, OF NAVASOTA, TEXAS.
FIREPROOF COVERING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1909.
Application filed August 14, 1908. Serial No. 448,626.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Auen OsoRNn BRIGANCE, a citizen of the United States of AmericaJ residing at Navasota, in the county of Grimes and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fireproof Coverings, of which the following is a speci- Iication.
rI`his invention relates to fire )roof coverings for bales of cotton and "or covering other inflammable materials or articles designedto be shipped from place to place, and one of the principal objects of the saine is to provide a covering or inclosure for a bale or package which will completely envelop the materials and which wi. present a practically fireproof barrier.
Another object of the invention is to provide a telesco ic covering for bales and other packages mac e of a practically fireproof material, such as asbestos and wire cloth properly united to form a flexible sheet material.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bale covered by a te escopic inclosure made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a blank cut te form one member of the telesco ic covering. Fig. 3 is a sectional view ta en through a piece of the material from which I form the covering.
In carrying out my invention I provide a suitable iireproof fabric consisting of a layer of asbestos, mineral wool or other iireproof or non-conducting material l which may be mixed with a small percentage of cement in order to give it the required properties of adhesion and flexibility. Properly embedded into this fireproof layer is a wire ycloth netting 2 Which may be made up of aluminum strands to provide a flexible body or of other suitable metallic wire. Cut from a sheet of this 'lireproof fabric, as shown in Fig. telescopic covering is made by slitting the blank a at the ends, as at b, and by :folding the blank on the dotted line c. Perf 1atio1is d are made in the end tabs7 and the blank is then folded to form the member A or B, and suitable fastenings C are passed through the holes d in the end tabs to form the telescopic member. The bale ties D may be of any suitable character and serve to hold the two sections A and B of the covering together.
A covering such as I have described may be placed Within a cotton press, and the cotton compressed within the cover, after which the bale ties are applied.
My invention may be produced at comparatively slight cost and will result in a great saving of cotton or other materials and in many instances save property and lives.
I claim The herein described iireproof covering for cotton bales comprising a sheet of asbestos fabric having an aluminum wire cloth netting embedded therein, said fabric being cut and folded to form telescopic members to inclose the bale of cotton therein, the ends of said telescopic members being adjustable to permit inspection of the cotton without mutilating the covering, and bale ties surrounding said telescopic members.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses,
ALICE OSBORNE BRIGANCE.
