MARY RYAN, OF BELOIT, WISCONSIN.
SKIRT-MARKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1909.
Application filed August 7, 1908. Serial No. 447,443.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY RYAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Beloit, county of Rock, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Markers, of which the following is a full and clear specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus set up ready for use; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken through the overlapped parts of the loop and showing the chalk carrier; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the chalk carrier; Fig. 4 is a detail horizontal section through the overlapped parts of the hoop; and, Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the screw clamps.
This invention has relation to that class of skirt-markers in which the gage-ring or hoop consists of a flexible steel or other metal band overlapped and clamped adjustably at its ends and adjustably mounted on a series of standards, and the invention consists of certain novel features of construction hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings by reference letters, a designates a series of standards graduated alike and adapted to rest upon the floor and to adjustably support the guide ring or hoop b which consists of a flexible metal strap whose ends are overlapped and provided with a series of registering perforations 0, whereby with the aid of clamp screws the ring or hoop may be readily increased or reduced in diameter to adapt it for skirts of different sizes.
The clamp screws consist each of a headed screw 6 passed outwardly through the registering holes and having screwed on its outer end a thumb-nut (Z adapted to clamp against the outer face of the band. The band is supported on the standards by means of outwardly projecting posts 9 each provided with a vertical transverse hole for the passage of the standard and with a set screw h to hold the parts in their adjusted position I preferably employ three of these standards and arrange them approximately equidistantly around the band.
A chalk-carrier i is mounted upon the band and provided on its top with a chalk clamp This chalk carrier consists of a clip-like strap of metal engaging over the upper and lower edges of the band, the fit being sufficiently loose to permit the carrier to slide along over the overlapped ends of the band as well as over the single-ply portion of the band. The outer side of the clip is open, that is, the outer wall of the clip is cut away, leaving upwardly and down wardly extending lips 70 which terminate short of the middle of the band. The object of this is to permit the chalk carrier to pass freely entirely around the hand without interference with the clamp screws or the posts g, these screws and posts being, as shown, arranged midway between the upper and lower edges of the band for this purpose.
It will be observed that my device is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction and is so constructed that the chalk-carrier may be quickly and easily slid entirely around the band, the chalk mark being made on the exterior of the garment.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A skirt-marker consisting of a flexible band having its ends overlapped, devices for clamping the overlapped ends adjustably upon each other, outwardly-extending posts on the band carrying set screws, these posts as well as the clamping devices being arranged on a line between the upper and lower edges of the band, and a chalk-carrying clip slidably mounted on the band and having its outer wall. open in order to pass by said posts and clamping devices, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses this 5 day of Aug. 1908.
MARY RYAN. WVitnesses HENRY L. MILLER, J. A. Love.
