To all whom it may concern:

Be it. known that I, NOAH Bnmns'rmn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Geneva, in the county of Adams and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence- Posts and Anchors Therefor, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improved fence post and anchoring means therefor.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be sixnple, inexpensive, strong and durable in construction, and which will effectively brace the post in an upright position and prevent it from sagging. 7

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:

In the drawings 1 denotes a fence post preferably a wooden one of rectangular shape having in one face adjacent to its bottom a transverse groove or recess 2 and in the same face adjacent to its top a recess 3 which forms a seat for the beveled upper end of a diagonal brace 4. The lower end of this brace is adapted to engage the ground a suitable distance from the post so as to effectively brace the latter against movement in one direction, and its upper end is retained in the recess or notch 3 by a U-shaped strap 5 which straddles the post and is secured thereon in an inclined position by a bolt 6 dpassed through the post and the ends of sai strap. The lower end of the brace is prevented from shifting by means of an ad ustable tie rod or bolt 7, the ends 8, 9 of which are screw threaded. The end 8 of this tie-rod is passed through an opening 10 in the brace and is provided with a washer 11 and a nut 12. The other end 9 of the tierod passes through an opening 13 in the post and is provided with a washer 14 and a nut 15. The tie-rod also passes through a. centrally arranged opening 16 in a cross piece or strap 17 of a U-shaped bracing and anchoring member 18. The latter is embedded in the ground in an inclined or diagonal position and in a plane substantially at right angles to that of the diagonal brace 4. Said member 18 is adapted to prevent nmvement of the post in the opposite longitudinal direction, and also to effectively anchor the post to the ground. Said member 18 is in the form of a large U-shaped bolt and in its closed end 19 may be arranged a large stone or block to more effectively prevent it from shifting in the ground when the post is under strain. The screw threaded ends 20 of the U-shaped member 18 extend across the front and rear faces of the post, and through openings 21 formed in the twist-ed or offset ends 22 of the cross piece 17, which latter has its central portion seated in the groove or recess 2 in the post so that it cannot shift vertically upon the post. Adjusting nuts 23 are provided upon the threaded ends 20 of the member 18 so that the latter may be adjusted.

In order to brace the post against lateral movement a substantially triangular brad ing member 242 is attached to its lower end. Said member 24 has a straight base portion 25 arranged transversely upon ,the bottom of the post and secured thereto by a screw 26, and it also has two side portions 27 which incline u wardly and inwardly from the ends of tlie base portion 25 and have their vertically projecting upper ends secured upon the front and rear faces of the post by a bolt 28 which passes through the post.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the invention provides a sim lo and practical post anchor which will c ectively secure it in an upright position. The provision of the adjustable tie rod 7 and the adjustable anchoring and bracing member 18,enablo the post to be straightened up in case it tilts or inclines when the fence is stretched or after it has been in extended use. The simple construction of the device enables it to e produced at a small cost and to be easily set up for use.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

The combination of a post having a rectangular body formed in one of its flat faces adjacent to its top and bottom with trans verse grooves, the post body being also formed with an opening in communication with the lower groove, a diagonal brace having its upper end seated in the upper groove in the post body and its lower end formed With an opening, a flat metal cross strap having its central portion seated in the lower groove in the post body and formed with a central opening to re ister with the opening in the post body, the ends of the strap projecting beyond the groove being twisted angularly and formed with apertures, a horizontal tie-rod passed through the opening in the brace and the registering openings in the post body and strap, the ends of the tie-rod. being screw threaded, nuts upon said threaded ends of the tie-rod, a U-shaped anchoring member disposed at right angles to the diagonal brace and upon the opposite side of the post. body, said memher having the ends of its parallel arms screw-threaded and passed through the apertures in the twisted ends of the strap, nuts upon the threaded ends of the member and engaged With the flat faces of the angularly twisted ends of the strap, and a transverse bracing member secured n on the bottom of the post body, substantially as shown and described.
