DENTAL ARTICULATOR.

Be it known that I, GEORGE B. SNow, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Articulators, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is supplementary to the one described in Letters Patent No. 870,909, issued November 12, 1907, to which reference is hereby made.

It relates to what have been termed anatomical articulators; in which certain devices are combined whereby the dentist is enabled to imitate in the articulator the lateral and protrusive movements of the mandible incident to mastication.

The object of my improvement is to facilitate the adjustment of the joint slides of the articulator to the correct angle for imitating the condyle movements of the mandible of the patient. I attain this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of an articulator embodying` my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the articulator on the line a-"o, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view of one of the joints, the point of view being from the middle of the articulator, looking outwards.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

The articulator consists of an upper section 1 and a lower section 2 having removable arms or loops 3-4 for the attachment of the plaster models of the alveolar ridges to which .the contemplated sets of artificial teeth are to be fitted. The lower section 2 has outwardly extending arms into which are screwed or otherwise fastened the inwardly projecting pins or journals 5. Interposed between the ends of section 1, and section 2 are the joint slides 6. These swivel upon inwardly projecting cylindrical journals 7 which are received in gripping sockets in the ends of section 1, and are rotatable therein g being secured at any desired inclination by tightening the pinching screws 18. The inner end of one of these journals in its gripping socket is shown at 7, Fig. 4. The joint slides 6 are slotted, as shown at 8, Fig. 1, for the reception of the tips of the journal screws 5.

Upon the rear edge of section 1 and in its middle is a fiange 9, projecting backwards and downwards at an angle of about 45, which supports a spring 10. The outer end of the spring abuts against a shoulder 11 upon the rod 12 which passes through the center of the spring and a hole in the flange 9; terminating in a hook 13; which hook detachably engages a cross pin 1.4 which connects two lugs 15 which project upwards and backwards from the middle of section 2. The cross pin 14, the journals 7 of the joint slides and the journal pins 5 which are received in the slots S are all in line, and the spring 10 exercises an even pressure upon section 1 as it rotates upon the journal screws 5; retaining said screws at the rear ends of the slots S.

When it is desired to adjust the joint slides 6 to the proper inclination to imitate the condyle movement of the inaudible of the patient, it is necessary to move section 2 forwards; causing the oint pins 5 to move forwards in the slots S. This movement is resisted by the spring 10, and I therefore provide for its being put out of action at such times by diseiigaging the hook 13 from the cross pin 14. For the purpose of enabling the dentist to have two or more sets of teeth in progress at the same time, using the same articulator, the loops 3 and 4 have been made removable and exchangeable for similar loops as described in Patent Number 629,531.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination in a dental articulator of the sections 1 and 2, the joint slides 6 j ournaled into gripping sockets 7 in the ends of section 1, joint pins 5 secured in section 2 and received into slots 8 in the joint slides G, and the spring 10 bearing upon the flange 9 and detachably secured to the cross pin 14 by means of the hooked rod 12.
