T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALONZO E. Rrronnns, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Hopec ale, county of \Vorcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Filling-Stop-Signaling Devices for Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like cnaracters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of means to indicate to the weaver the cause of stoppage of an automatic filling replenishing loom of the so called feeler type when, owing to certain circumstances it would be dlflicult to locate quickly the trouble. Looms of this type have bee provided with two detectors or forks, arranged to cause loom stoppage upon detection of filling absence by either fork, and with means to arrest take-up, so that no pick will occur in the cloth in which filling is partly or wholly absent, such a loom forming the subject matter of United States Patent No. 763,441, granted June 28, 1904 to V. I. Stimpson.
By the arrangement shown thin places are prevented, as the prompt stoppage of the loom upon detection of filling absence gives the weaver the opportunity to take out the faulty pick. There are times when it is difficult for the weaver to determine promptly why the loom has stopped, for if the filling breaks on the pick to the left hand side of the loom just the feeler device calls for replenishment the loom will stop, through the action of the left hand fork, while the shuttle will have a full bobbin therein, and the weaver would have to examine the various parts of the loom to ascertain what particular fault caused stoppage. The feeler might for some reason act so tardily that there would not be enough filling left to lay a complete pick before running out, so that the right hand fork would effect stoppage while the shuttle would receive a fresh bobbin, due to feeler action. So, too, the forks, one or the other, might operate improperly, to stop the loom when the filling is intact. In the first two cases the imperfect pick would be beaten in before stoppage and should be taken out and the pick matched by hand before starting the loom, but the time required for the weaver to ascertain the nature of the fault would stop production on the loom, and would detract the weavers attention from the other looms in the set.
My present invention has for its object the production of means to indicate and automatically, by means of a signal device, whenever the loom has stopped as the result of the action of one of the detectors or forks, so that the weaver at a glance knows that warp faults have nothing to do with the stoppage, but that a filling fault or an improper fork action is the cause.
The novel features of my invention will be fully described in the subjoined specification and particularly pointed out in the following claims.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a sufficient portion of a loom such as shown in the patent referred to, with one embodiment of my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail in side elevation of the signal device, to more clearly illustrate the construction and operation thereof.
Referring to Fig. l the lay if having at the shipper side the shuttle-box B arranged to be intermittingly entered by the feeler 1, the autoinatically-self-threading shuttle 8*, the transferrer j'" and filling-feeder F of the replenishing mechanism (shown in part) the rock-shaft (Z to control the operation of said mechanism; the filling detectors or forks f and g and their slides f 9*, the adjacentweft-hannners or vibrators W, the shipper S, and knock-off lever 12 cooperating with the slide f and with the arm 14-, fast on the sleeve 13 surrounding the shaft d; the second arm 15 fast on the sleeve and cooperating with the slide 9*; and the arm (Z faston the shaft (Z and having the latch 9 and moved into position to be engaged by the hunter 40* when the feeler detects predetermined filling exhaustion in the running shuttle, may be and are all as in the patent referred to, and operate as therein set forth. The fork f detects on the flight of the shuttle to the shipper side of the loom, and the fork g detects on the opposite flight, either fork cansin loom stoppage when absence of filling is detected, but as the loom generally turns over before coming to a stop the feeler action, if concurrent with the detecting ac tion of either fork, will cause replenishment so that the shuttle has a fresh bobbin therein when the loom comes to a stop, and ordinarily with not-hing to indicate the cause of the stop.
In accordance with my present invention I secure to the fork stand or guide, as f, a holder 5, between which and the side of the stand is pivoted at 6 the end of an arm 7, enlarged at its rear end at 8 and preferably painted red or some other easily distinguishable'color, the arm normally resting on a pin 9 extended laterally from the adjacent fork-slide, the arm being curved or camshaped, as shown in Fig. 2. Normally the signal head or portion 8 occupies the full line position, Fig. 2, below the top of the slide and in an inconspicuous position, but if the slide is moved outward the pin 9 acts upon the under edge of and elevates the signal arm into dotted line position, so that the signal is clearly visible for a distance, the arm being'frictionally held in such position between the holder 5 and the fork-stand until pushed down by hand into normal position. Each fork is provided with a signal device, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the weaver knows instantly, by a glance at a stopped loom, that one of the forks has operated to cause the stoppage and that the fault is with the filling, so that no time is lost in looking over the mechanism. After the fault has been arrested the weaver returns the signal to normal, non-signaling position and starts up the loom.
By means of the signal device much of the Weavers time is saved, and this is of great importance when there may be from eight to sixteen or more looms in the set under the care of one weaver.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettors Patent is 1. In a loom adapted to replenish automatically the filling in the running shuttle, means to cause replenishment prior to complete exhaustion of the running filling, a detector adapted to effect stoppage of the loom upon detection of filling absence, and a signal device adjacent the detector and moved into abnormal, signaling position by detecting action of the detector.
2. In a loom adapted to replenish automatically the filling in the running shuttle, means to cause replenishment prior to complet-e exhaustion of the running filling, a detector to detect filling failure, means to cause a change in the operation of the loom by detecting action of the detector, a signal device, and means to move it into signaling position by the action of the detector upon detection of filling failure.
3. In a loom, mechanism to provide the running shuttle'with fresh filling prior to complete exhaustion, two filling-detectors to detect filling absence on alternate picks, stopping means for the loom operated by or through detecting action of either detector, and a visual signal for each detector, moved automatically into signaling position by de tecting action thereof.
4. In a loom, mechanism to provide the running shuttle with fresh filling prior to complete exhaustion, two filling-detectors to detect filling absence on alternate picks, stopping means for the loom operated by or through detecting action of either detector, a normally lowered signal adjacent each detector,and means operative upon detecting action of a detector to raise its signal to indicating position.
5. In a loom, mechanism to provide the running shuttle with fresh filling prior to complete exhaustion, two filling-forks and their slides, located at opposite sides of the loom, a signal device mounted on a fixed fulcrum adjacent each slide, and a projection on the slide to cooperate with the adjacent signal and move it into signaling position by outward movement of the slide.
6. In a loom, a shipper, two filling-detectors to detect filling absence on alternate picks, means to effect release of the shipper when either detector detects filling absence, and a visual signal for each detector and moved. automatically into abnormal, signal ing position by or through detecting action of its detector.
