COPY HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 8, 1908.

WALTER A. OLIVE, or
INDIANOLA, IOWA. a
COPY-HOLDER.
. Sp ecification Letters Patent,
Patented Feb. s, 1909.
Applieati on filed June 8,1908- Serial No..437,3Q1.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WALTER A.'OLIVE, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Indianola, in the county of Warren and State of Iowa, have invented a'certain new and useful Copy-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
'The object of my invention is to provide' a copy-holder of simple, durable and inex-' pensive construction designed to be placed upon a table or other horizontal support and to hold a sheet of paper, or a number of sheets of paper, at any desired angle, so that the user may readily read the notes upon the n sheet of paper and so that the paper will be.
held firmly in position and will, not be af-; fected by ordinary drafts of Wind.
A further obj ect= is to provide .a device of this kind that is also adapted for use as a.
paper weight. p
' My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the Variousparts of the device, whereby the objects con-' templated are attained, as hereinafter more;
fullyset forth, pointed outin my claims,
' and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- 7 Figure 1 shows a top 'or plan view ofa device embodying my invention. Fig. 2
shows a sectional view of same on the line' 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a top'orpl'a'n viewof a modified form of the invention,
'andFig. 4 shows a sectional view on the line 47-4: of Fig. 3. In this figure a-sheet of paper -is shown supported in ppsition for use. i
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
,rthe frame of the device in the form shown in Figsfland 2, comprises a sheet-metal cyl-- 40 inder -10, taperedftoward its upper end and having a horizontal partition 11 spaced apart frointhe upper end. This partition, is provided with an openirw 12 through which shot13, or any'other suitable Weight, may be inserted intothe lower part .of the cylinder as required to give the device the necessary stability and weight. Mounted upon the top of the partition. 11, is a guide 14 and Y in this guide I have slidinggly mounted the ends 15 of a wire paoer hol er The central portionlti of the wire paper In the modified'formshown in Figs. 3f
land 4, I have shown the trams of the ma;- i chine formed complete of a single piece of unaterial such as glass, the body'portion 'ibeing indicated by the numeral 18. At its upper portion is a substantially cylindrical recess 19 and in this recess is a paper holding arm 20, of substantially the same outline as the wire paper holder herein described.
The armoQO is formed integral with the bodyportion 18 and is not adjustable. I
: In practical use with either form of the invention and assuming that it is desired to hold a single sheet of-paper, then the op erator bends the paper along a longitudi nally central line and places the lower central portion of the sheet of paper between thepaper holding arm and the adjacent side of the body portion as clearly shown in Fig.
4. I have found that when a sheet-of paper.
'isTlilmrtadong a central line and placed 'in said position, the sides of the body portion'will engage the paper in such a manner a as to hold its lower portion in position with the, lower-edges of thepaper bent upwardly and whenin' 'said'position'an ordinary sheet of'writing paperwill be firmly supported.
In the form shown in Figs. 1 and'2, the paper holding arm may be moved in the slide 14: to and from. the adjacent side of the body portionlO, hence, by this arrangement the devlce. maybe adapted for holding a single sheet of paper at any desired angle, and it may also beadapted for holding a book or a large number of sheets oztpaper.
I claim as my invention.
1. An improved copy holder, comprising a body portion having a recessijn' its top,
and an arm lin said recess extending upwardlyand toward one side of the recess.
2.- An improved copy-holder, comprising a body portion having a recess in its top,- and an arm insaid recess extending upwardlyand toward one side of the recess, said arm being slidinglysupported.
.- .,3.. An improved copy holder, comprising asheet metal body portion, with its walls holder eatendsfupwar'dly andat an obtuse j tapered toward its upper end, a horizontal partition therein spaced apart from the top and having an opening therein a guide on said partition, and a single piece of Wire doubled at its central portion and having its ends slidingly mounted in said guide, said Wire being extended upwardly from the partition and toward one side of the body and then downwardly to a point below the top I of the body, substantially as and for the I purposes stated. 10
