.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Vrnus N. STONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quebeck, in the county of l Vhite and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Package-Ties, of which the following is a specification' This invention relates to package ties, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, cheap and effective device for securely fastening packages or bundles of papers, the invention being particularly designed with references to the needs of the Post Ofiice Department in securing mail matter in packages for transportation purposes.
The package tie of this invention is capable of being quickly applied to and removed from bundles of mail matter and may be repeatedly used without material deterioration, thereby ei'lecting a great saving in the quantity of cord or string now consumed by department.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a plan view of the tie in its applied position. Fig. 2 is a side or edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the plate.
The tying device of this invention comprises essentially four elements, namely, a plate 1, a cord or string 2, a button 3 and a cleat l.
The plate is preferably flat and rectangular as clearly shown in -r-igs. l and 3 and is provided adjacent to one side edge thereof with a hole 5, in which the cord or string is secured at one end, the said cord or string being of sui'licient length to pass twice around the package, once lengthwise and once cross-wise. The length of the cord or string may, however, be varied to suit special conditions or requirements.
The cleat 4 is arranged adjacent to the opposite side oi the plate from the hole 5 and is provided with a recessed shoulder 6 in transverse alinement with the point of attachment of the cord, or in other words, the hole 5, so that after the string has been passed around the package as shown in Fig. 1, the cord is placed in engagement with the shoulder 6 and then carried along the inner side of the cleat as shown in Fig. 1, thus bringing the tension on the spring and plate at opposite points, which prevents the tendency of the plate to twist under the tension of the cord.
The button 3 is located adjacent to one end of the plate with the shank 7 thereof ap proximately in longitudinal alinement with the inner edge of the cleat 4 as clearly shown in the plan view, Fig. 1 so that after the string or cord has been passed around the cleat and carried lengthwise around the package and then wrapped one or more times around the shank of the button, said cord leads straight from the shank of the button along the inner side of the cleat for the second time, when it is secured by deiiecting the same laterally between the aws 8 and 9 of the cleat 4. The end of the string may then be carried reversely along the outer side of the cleat and passed a second time along the recessed shoulder 6 as clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.
The jaw 8 or the cleat constitutes a rigid jaw, while the upper jaw 9 may be a spring j aw and, if desired, said jaw 9 may be provided with a terminal shoulder 10 which will insure the retention of the spring between the jaws 8 and 9.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that the package tie may be quickly and easily applied to a package of any size and as easily removed therefrom without cutting or injuring the cord; iurthermore, this may be done repeatedly without renewing the cord.
Elaving described the invention, 1 claim A package tie comprising a plate, a button located at one side of the center thereof, a cord attached at one end to the plate near one side thereof, and a cleat on said plate having one side thereof approximately in longitudinal alinement with the shank of the button and also proviced with a recessed shoulder in transverse alinement with the point of attachment of the cord, and a biiurcated end portion adapted to receive and hold the cord.
