To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. SEIB, citizen of the United States, and'resident of cient means of the character speclfied.
Tothe above and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of devices to be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters indicate correspond-' ing parts in the various views, Figure 1 1s an end elevation partly in section of a typewriter carriage equipped with the devices of my invention, the parts in this yiew being shown in normal position. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same with some of the parts omitted, this view illustrating the disposition of the parts when the feed rollers are released. Fig. 3 is a top view of the carriage with the platen omitted and parts broken away. Fig. is anenlarged detail perspective view of a device forming part of the means for supporting the lateII scale. Fig. 5 ,is an enlarged detail ottom view showing the means for effecting 'anadjustment of the bearing of a pivoted transmitting device to be hereinafter more fully described.
I have shown my invention in the present instance applied to a Monarch machine but it should be understood that the invention may be embodied in other styles of machines.
The platen frame or carriage 5 comprises a rear cross or traverse bar 1 grooved on opposite sides at 2 for cooperation with anti-fric tion: balls or rollers which are likewise re-i ceived in grooved fixed guide rails (not shown). Projecting forwardly from the traverse bar are end plates 3 which are provided with bearing openings for a platen shaft 4 which supports a rotative platen 5. Ears 6 are formed upon the traverse bar and extend forwardly therefrom. These ears receive feed roll hangers 7 pivoted at 8 to said ears.
Springs 9 are coiled at one end portion as at 10 around the pivots 8 and each bears at one end as at 11 against the traverse bar and -.bears at the opposite end 12 against the under side of the associated hanger to ress it towards the laten. is connected at 1ts ends to the hanger arms 7 and supports independently movable mainpaper feed rollers 14 which are spaced apart y slee'ves 15 which surround the shaft 13.

A rock shaft 17 is mounted in the en 'lates 3 of the carriage and projectsibeyou the left-hand end plate and carries at its extendedend' a finger piece 18 by which the rock shaft may be controlled. Stop ins '19 and 20 projectoutwardly from the efthand end plate 3 on opposite sides of the fingerpiece or crank arm 18 in order to limit its movement in opposite directions. -A- pa er apron 21 is bent to conform substantia ly to the curvature of the platen and is provided withears 22 at the upper rear side thereof. These ears loosely surround the rock shaft 17 sons to pivotally connect the paper apron to the rock shaft. Feed roll angers 23 are likewise pivoted to the ears 6 as indicated at 24. Springs 25 are each coiled at one end ortion around one of the'pivots 24 and eac 1 bears at 26 against the traverse'bar 1. The'opposite end of each spring bears against the bottom of the associated hanger arm 23. The hanger arms 23 have leaf springs 31 riveted thereto at 32, the free ends of said leaf springs bearing u-pqwardly against the forward end'portion of t e paper apron to maintain it in operative position bearing against the platen. When the hanger arms 7 and 23 are lowered the springs 31 will likewise be lowered, thus freeing the paper apron from pressure and allowing the paper apron todrop away froin the face of the platen.

Each pair of'these ears receives between I them a device 37 which may be of the form shown in detail in Fig. 4.v This device is 'provided'mwith cars 38 received between the ears 36-and apertured to receive a pivot 39 which pivotally connects thehvicc to the bracket arm. leaf spring 43 is connected to, each bracket arm 34 by a-rivet 44 and bears at its free end against a portion 45 of the associated pivoted device 37, the tension of the spring tending to turn the platen scale about the pivots 39. so as bu ress. the upper edge of said scale against t e platen.-
One or both of'the pivoted devices 37 may be provided with an oil-set and rearwardly extending arm 46. In the present instance mwardl at its free end to form a finger 51 which 1s received beneath the right-hand hanger arm 7 of the main paper feed rollers. The bearing 49 for the pivoted actuating device 47 48-50,is adjustably secured to the bottom of the right-hand bracket 34 by headed screws 52 which pass through slots 53 in the bearing in order to afford an adjustment of the bearing and the ivoted device carried thereby fore and aft 0 the machine.
' The effect of this adjustment is to vary the extent of throw transmitted to the laten scale through an actuation of the pivoted device 47-48-50. It may be found desirable to provide one of these pivoted devices at each end of the platen to cooperate with each of the devices 37, but in most instances downwardly (especially wherea short laten is em loyed) one of the devices will e found su cient. When the parts are in normal position as shown in Fig. 1 the feed rollers, paper a ron and platen scale are adjacent to or ear against the face of the platen under the ressure of the various springs whlch contro the parts. When, however, the finger piece 18 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 2 it is V effective to turn the rock shaft 17 tobrin the projections or studs 54 into contact wit the anger arm's 7 thus forcing the arms around the pivots 8. The e fiect'of this movement is to transmit motion to the hanger arms 23, thus movingthe. away from the forward set ofufeed rollers p aten. This same movement of the ham er arms 7 efiects a vibration of-the pivoted evice 47-48-50, causin the arm 47 thereof to turn the right-hand evice 37 to effect a mpvement of the platen scale around the pivots 39 to the position-shown in Fig. 2, thus relieving all of the paper feeding and controllin devices from ressure and releasing them rom contact with the platen. As hereinbefore pointed out an ad ustment of vary the throw ofthe laten scale.
While I have referre herein to the part 41 as a platen scale, the term usually employed stances provided with a scale and I do not with a scale.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, paper feed devices, means for releasing said paper feed devices, a pivoted platen scale, means for moving the platen scale away from the platen when the paper feed devices are released, said moving means comprisin a pivoted device actuated b said releasing means and actuating said pivoted platen-scale, and means for effecting an adjustment of certain of said parts to vary the throw of the platen scale.
5. In a, typewriting -machine, the combination of a platen, paper feed devices, means for releasing said paper feed devices, a pivoted laten scale, means for moving the platen sca e away from the platen: when the paper feed devices are released, said movm means comprising a pivoted device actuate pivoted platen scale, and means for effecting an adjustment of said pivoted device.
