Description

W. MEHLER'. GARMENT DISPLAY DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED D3017, 190a.
Patented Feb. 9. 1909.
WITNESSES ATTOR/VE Y WILLIAM MEHLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GARMENT-DISPLAY DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1909.
Application filed December 17, 1908. Serial No. 467,970.
To all Qohmn it may concern."
The main horizontal bar a from which Be it known that I, WILLIAM MEHLER, a some of the clothes are suspended is rigidly citizenof the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented Ini rovements in Garment- Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The class of garment display devices to which this invention relates comprises the use of a horizontal bar on which the clothes are suspended and means for setting the bar in two positions, within and outside of a containing cabinet.
This invention consists in providing an auxiliary suspension bar having means by which it may be attached to the main bar so as to be moved therewith and hang in vertical planes below it when in its two posltions.
. It also consists of controlling and locking devices for limiting the movement of the auxiliary bar to the two bounding vertical planes of the main bar and for looking or olding the auxiliary bar in said positions. By the use of this auxiliary bar the hen ing capacity for comparatively short clot es, for exhibition purposes &c., of display devices of this character is doubled, the height of the auxiliary bar being about one-half that of the main bar, and the hanging con nections are such that theauxiliary bar may be readily detached and stored away, as for instance in the rear of the inclosing cabinet,
when it is desired to exhibit long clothes, as overcoats &c., which by reason of their length would not hang properly from the main bar were the auxilliary bar present.
A construction with these and minor features will now be described by reference had to the accompanying drawings. in which- Figure 1 is a transverse section of a device embodying my present invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the upper part of the device,
showing the horizontal suspension bars in outer positions; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the upper part, and Fig. 4 is a plan taken on the section line 4, 4, Fig. 1.
The particular kind of clothes display device, having a movable horizontal suspension bar, to which the auxiliary suspension bar of this invention is shown applied in the drawings is the one shown and de-' scribed in an application for Letters Patent by me May 20, 1908, Serial Number 433,854, so a brief description of the main features will here only be necessary.
connected'a't its ends to the upper ends of the supporting rods byfitted to rock from their lower ends by being there provided with shoes 0, having rounded b68.Il11gSUl-.
faces and held in bracket supports d.
For the purpose of this invention it will be understood that pivotal or other connections may be used at the lower ends of l the rods 6 which provide for the free inward and outwardmo'vements of the main bar a.
The bar a and the rods 1) are moved and controlled by a lever e pivoted at f to a bracket g, having a slot which embraces a stud at the side of the rod 6 and a handle 7L ofiset therefrom to extend in a plane within the inner face of the rod 1) for the easy manipulation of the device by means of said handle' The handle may be duplicated at the other end of the device as shown by the dotted lines, Fig. 3.
The device may be inclosed in a cabinet, shown by the dotted lines '5, and attached thereto as in the before-mentioned application, or the bracket supports d may be secured to the floor, but preferably to a board 7', to hold them in proper relative positions, which inturn may be secured. to the floor; and the upper bracket g maybe secured to the wall, or where two are used they may be secured'to a board, shown by the dotted lines 7c, Fig. 3, which may be secured to the wall. Fastening the controlling connections to boards 7' and is will greatly faciitate the erection of the device when applied for use without a containing cabinet.
The manner in which the rods 1) are rocked and the bar an easily movedfroni its inner position, F-ig. 1, to its outer'position, Fig, 2, and reversely, and held in said two positions by the lever 6 will be understood from an inspection of the drawings.
The auxiliary suspension'bar Zis of such length as to ass between the two side rods 1). It is rigidly connected at its ends to rods m, m, which at their upper ends are provided with hook shaped sockets a, n formed to seat over the rounded upper ends of the rods, b, b and to have a partial rocking action thereon. The rods m, m may of course be made to hook over the bar a, alongside of the side rods 1), b. To prevent the bar I swinging beyond positions vertical to the bar a strap pieces 0, 0 are secured to the rods 6, b, are so located as to exten laterally and have their ends bent to act as stops p for limiting the movements of the bar I as before described; and to hold thebar l in the two outer positions knobs or projections q'are formed on the faces of the straps in such positions as to hold the rods m against the stops p, as clearly shown" in Figs. 1, 2 and 4; the said straps having sufficient resiliency to permit the rods m passing over the holding knobs when the suspension bars are moved from one position to the other. This auxiliary suspension bar converts a garment display device of the character described made for the exhibition of long clothes into one adapted clothes, and in so doing doubles. the clothes hanging capacity'of the device, the clothes being suspended from the bars by any suitable hangers, as r, 'r", and as the auxiliary bar is readily detachable by simply lilting its upper hooks off the rod b, the device is then again adapted for the exhibition &c. of long clothes.
I claim as my invention 1. In a garment displaydevice, comprising a horizontal bar and its supports and means for setting it and holding it in difl'erent positions, the combination o f an auxilr I bar located directly iary suspending bar rovided'with end hanging rods adapted to ang at their upper ends at the ends of the -main bar with the auxiliary bar located directl below the main bar in all ositions occupie by it. 7
2. n a garment display device, comprising a horizontal bar. and its supports and means for setting it and holding it in different positions, the combination of an auxil means for setting and holding it in difierent positions, the combination of an auxiliary suspending bar provided with end hanging rods adapted to ang at their u per ends at the ends of the main bar with t lie auxiliary below the main bar in all ositions occupled by it, and means carried by the supports of the main bar for arresting the movements of the auxiliary bar beyond vertical planes passing through the main bar when it is in the inner and outer limiting positions. 1 a v 4. In a garmentdisplay device, compris ing a horizontal bar and its supports and for holding short means for setting and holding it in different positions, the. combination of an auxiliary suspending bar rovided with end hanging rods adapted to ang at their u per ends at the ends of the main barwith t e auxiliary bar located directly below the main bar in all positions occupied by it, and means for locking the auxiliary bar vertically under the main bar. in the two limited positions.
5. In a garment display device, comprising a horizontal bar and its su ports and means for setting and holding it in difierent positions, the combination of an auxiliary suspending bar rovided with end han 'ng positions occupied by it, and means carried by the supports of the main bar for locking the auxiliary bar vertically under the main bar in the two limited ositions.
6. In a garment displity device, in combination, a horizontal suspension bar, supporting rods connected at their u per ends to the sus ension bar and provide at their lower en s with swinging connections, means for rocking the supporting rods to set the suspension bar in inner and outer positions, an auxiliary suspension bar having end rods pro-' vided with hooks adapted toengage with the upper ends of the main bar supportin rods and by which the auxiliary bar is he (1 beneath the main bar, stops connected to the main bar supporting rods to limit the moves ments of the auxiliary bar and those of the main suspension bar.
1 7. In a garment display device, in combination, a horizontal suspension bar, supporting rods connected attheir u per ends to the sus ension bar and provide at their lower GDL s with swingin connections,-means for rocking the supporting rods to set the suspension bar in inner and outer positions, an auxiliary sus ension bar having end rods provided wit hooks adapted to engage with the upper ends of the mainban supportin rods an by which the auxiliary-bar is he (i beneath the main bar, resilient strapsconnected to the main bar supporting rods provided with stops and locking means arranged to act on end rods of the auxiliary bar-for holding. the auxiliary bar directly underthe main suspension bar when in the inner and outer positions.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto Witnesses: I
