EDWARD J. MILLER, or SHAMOKIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
ATTACI-HWENT FOE SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1909.
Application filed December 2, 1908. Serial No. 465,610.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, EDWARD J. MILLER, a and a resident in the county of Northumberland and State'of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to attachments for sewing machines, and more particularly to such as are adapted to be removably secured to the balance wheels of the machines. and each of which consists of a frame having a grinding rim formed of emery, carborunof a sewing machine;
dum or the like, arranged thereon, and adjustable means forremovably securing the frame to any ordinary balance wheel.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described, simple and serviceable in construction and inexpensive to manufacture, which can easily be attachedto the balance wheelof a sewing machine for the sharpening of knives, scissors or the like.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation having parts in section, and showing an embodiment of my invention applied to the balancewheel and Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the attachment, having a part broken away.
In the specific form shown in the drawings, I provide an annular frame 1 formed of any suitable metal, and having an annular peripheral rib 9, as shown most clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The rib isundercut and is similar in cross section to a dovetail. Extending radially and inwardly, and being integral with the frame 1 are lugs or ears 2. These lugs are provided with slots 3, for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
. The under sides of the lugs are cutaway, as
shown most clearly in Fig. 1.
Adapted to be received by the slots 3 of the lugs, are hook bolts a, the latter having said lugs having slots their ends 5which project through the slots-threaded to receive correspondingly threaded butterfly-nuts 6. 7 of the bolts are adapted to engage the btilancc wheel rim, so that the frame 1 can be securely clamped thereon. The provision of slots in the lugs in place of circular openings, and the lugs being undercut, allows the bolts & a considerable range of adjustment, to adapt the attachment to various types and sizes of Wheels. v
a Formed to be carried by the frame, and to be held in place by therib'on the periphery of the latter, is a grinding rim 8 of any suitable material, such as emery, carborundum, or the like. Preferably the grinding rim is molded in place on the frame.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a device of the class described, an annular frame provided with a peripheral rib, said frame having inwardly disposed lugs provided with slots, hook bolts, each having one end projecting through one of said slots, and having the other end adapted to engage a balance wheel removably to secure said frame thereon, and a grinding rim molded upon said frame.
2. An emery wheel adapted to be removably secured to the balance Wheel of a sewing machine, comprising an annular frame provided with an undercut rib,'said frame having inwardly disposed undercut lugs,
extending longitudinally thereof, hook bolts adapted to project through said slots and serving operatively to engage the balance wheel of said sewing machine, butterfly nuts on said bolts for siecuring said frame to said wheel, and a grinding rim carried by said frame.
In testimony whereof I have name to this specification in the two subscribing witnesses.
EDIVARD J. MILLER.
