Description
W. L. IWAN.
PIPE HANGER. APPLICATION FILED AUG. 23,1906.
Patented Feb. 9, 1909.
\ NITED STATES PATENT onnio WILLIAM L. IWAN, OF STREATOR, ILLINOIS.
PIPE-HANGER.
7 Application filed August 23,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WlLLIAM L. 'IWAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Streator, in the county of Lasalle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to means for fastening pipes to Walls; and my primary obj eet is to provide adevice for the purpose indicated which can be cheaply manufactured, and which "is perfectly adapted to its purpose.
The invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawing, in Which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a corner of a building having a pipe secured to a wall thereof by means of my improved pipe-hangers; Fig. 2, a perspective viewfof one of the hangers; and Fig. 3, a section takenas indicated at line 3 of Fig. 2;
A represents a building Wall; E a pipe; and (7, my improved plpe-hanger. The hanger C comprises a tapering shank c, and curved pipe-engaging portion carried thereby.
The. device is stamped from sheet-metal or bar-metal, and the portion 0 is then bent in the plane of the'metal, i, e., edgewise, from the condition indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2 to the conditionindicated in full lines ,in said figure The part c tapers somewhat atits free extremity, asshown.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1909. 1906, Serial no. 331,723.
At the junction of the portion 0} with the shank c, an oliset c is formed on one ed e of the device, affording a head having a shoulder a which may be struck by a hammer in driving the device into a Wall. Near the base of the shank c, the metal is struck laterally to form a wedge-shaped boss 0 This boss enters as a wedge when the shank is driven into a wall, and aids in stiifening the hanger against lateral play. It serves, also, to mark the depth to which the shank should be driven. The shoulder 0 serves to receive the blows of a hammer in driving the hanger into the wall Hangers of the improved construction may be economieally cut from sheet-metal, or barmetal, without waste of material, and are very strong and durable.
' What I regard as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pipe-hanger formed of sheet-metal, having a tapering shank and a portion curved edgewise of the metal and forming a pipeengaging portion, the hanger-having also a laterally struck wedge-shaped boss at the base of the shank and an olfset shoulder at the base of the convex edge of the curved portion, for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM L. IWAN.
In the presence of- J. H. LANDES, C. IV. WASIIBUBNE.
