HORSE SHOE Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that we, JOHN P. DUNN and ARCHIBALD MOKAIG, Sr., both citizens of the United States, residing at Bu'alo, in the county of Erie and'State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in horseshoes and particularly contemplates a shoe that is formed as an entirety from an integral section of metal.

The invention primarily aims to provide a one-piece horseshoe, embodying in its blank form a toe-calk and clip formed integral with the body of the shoe.

The detailed description will appear in the course of the following descriptionrin which reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, like numerals designating like parts throughout the several views, wherein,- l

Figure 1 is a rear plan view of the horseshoe blank from which the horseshoe is formed. Fig. 2 is 'a bottom plan view of a nished blank. Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal section on line 4 4, Fig. 3, and Fig. y5 is a side elevation of a complete horseshoe formed from the blank illustrated in the preceding gures.

In the practical embodiment of our invention we preferably employ a blank -1 comprising an elongated bar, which is of substantially rectangular cross-sectional shape and has formed thereupon a depending projection 2, constituting the toe-calk. `When using a blank thus formed to construct our improved shoe, it is bent to horseshoe form by an approved apparatus, and the calk 2 is curved, as at 6, so that its radius is-greater than the peripheral curvature of the body of the shoe. Said calk is also tapered in width and length, as at 7, to give it the desired shape. A portion of the material of the calk 2 is struck up by being wedged or drafted therefrom, to form a forwardly projecting portion 3, which is flattened and pointed and constitutes a toe-clip. Said toe-clip is offset or slightly raised above the upper surface of the body of the shoe, as at 4, to facilitate bending the clip 3 to the conformation of the hoof, in order to receive the thrust thereof.

In the completed shoe shown in Fig. 5, the

clip is bent to perpendicular position, and

the legs 8 having been reduced to the proper length, are formed upon their ends with heel-calks 9 in the well known manner.

i/Vhile the elements herein shown and described are well adapted to serve the purpose set forth, it is obvious that various minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim is,*

l. As a new article of manufacture, a horseshoe comprising a metallicblankformed with an integral depending rounded toe-calk having a curve of greater radius than the body of the shoe, and a forwardly projecting flattened and pointed toeclip offset from and raised above the upper surface of the body of the shoe.

2. A horseshoe having a forwardly projecting and pointed toe-clip provided with a fiat upper face, the clip being raised above and offset from the upper surface of the body of the shoe on a line with the outer periphery of the latter.

3. A horseshoe formed of a straight bar rectangular in cross-section and provided at a point midlength or approximately so with a depending projection, said bar when formed into horseshoe shape having its projection curved-to form a toe-calk whose radius is greater than-the periphery of the shoe and having a forwardly projecting tongue offset ifrom and raised above the upper surface of the body of the shoe.
