To all whom 'Zt-may concern:

Be it known that I, HARVEY E. TURNER, a citizenaof the United States, residing at William, in the county of Tucker and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new vand useful Improvements in Horseshoe- Blanks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved horseshoe blank, and the primary object of the invention is to construct a horseshoe blank of metal, from which a horseshoe may be formed by turning the toe extensions and heel extensions, so as to obviate the welding of calks upon the toes and heels of the shoe.

Another object of the invention is to provide a horseshoe blank which is stamped in a novel form and adapted to furnish a complete article in which the toe and heels are formed integrally with the body of the shoe and in which said toe and heels may be turned primarily or left temporarily in an unturned position, for shaping the same as desired.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of a blank of a horseshoe as stamped from a single section of metal in the embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the shoe after the toe and heels have been turned.

Referring to the drawings in detail, there is shown a horseshoe 10, the side portions 11 of which are of the usual form and provided with a series of openings 12 through which the fastening nails for securing the shoe to a horses hoof are adapted to be passed, it being understood that these openings may be'stamped through said sidel portions at the same time that the blank is cut from a single section of metal or after the blank shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings has been cut as shall be found desirable. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the horseshoe blank is formed or stamped with a forward extension 13 and provided with Specification of Letters Patent.

notches 14 extending vertically from the top to the bottom, at the ends of the said extension or toe piece to permit easy and accurate turning of the latter in a straight line between the inner extremities of said notches and the side portions 11. The notches also enable the toe calk to be located inwardly of the body of the horseshoe, when formed, so that it does not project unduly beyond the forward end of the body of the horseshoe. The rear end portions of the body or blank are formed with heel extensions 15. W'hen the blank is shaped to form a horseshoe, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the extension 13 is bent downwardly and when thus shaped forms the toe calk of the shoe while the extensions 15 are 'similarly bent to form the heel calks thus obviating the necessity and arduous task of heating the shoe and welding on the toe and heel calks as is now generally done. It will also be seen that by extending or forming the notches 14 within the body of the shoe the extension -or projection 15 will be bent on a line connecting the inner extremities of the notches so that the toe calk thus formed will lie within the area of the body instead of projecting forwardly thereof and the notches thereby closed during the heating of the shoe when the projection is bent.

A horseshoe blank formed with a forward toe calk extension and with a notch in the body of the blank adjacent each end of said extension, thus facilitating the bending of the forward extension on a line between the inner extremities of said notches and for inwardly locating the toe calk relative to the body when the blank is bent on said line.
