Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1909,.
Application filed. April 1, 1907. Serial No. 366,631.
To all whom it may concerns Beitknown that I, JO N J. MCGUIRE, of
Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new'and useful Im-' rovements in Water-Closets, of' which the ollowing is a s ecification.
The object o my invention is to provide an improved connection between the water closet base and waste pipe, whereby the ordinary lead bend may be dispensed with and all danger of leakage arising from breaks in the joints through settling of the floor or for other causes will be entirely avoided.
The invention consists generally in providing a base having a connection with the waste pipe and on which base the water closet is secured. f
In the accompanying drawings, forming art of this specification, Figure 1' is a view illustrating my invention in use, the base and connection with the waste pi e being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a detai view partially in section of the pipe connection between the closet base and the waste pipe. Fig. 3 is a view of the under side ofthe base.
In the drawing, 2 represents the iioor, 3 the waste pipe and 4 the lower portion of a water closet. Generally these closets are secured to the floor by bolts or screws and connected by a lead bend with. the w ste pipe. .It is difiicult to secure the closet to a tile or cement floor and it often happenswhen the floor settles or becomes uneven through any cause, that the closet will be tilted suiliciently to breakthe joint between it and the waste pipe connection. and causea leak. Furthermore, owing to the position of the waste pipe it is often difilcult to make the connection with. the closet. To obviate all these objections, I provide a base 5, preferably of cast metal, having a depending flange 6 on its edge that corresponds in width substantially to the thickness of the finish floor so that the top of the base will be flush with the floor. A series of holes 7 are provided in the base to receive bolts 8 which secure the closet to the base, and ribs 9 are referably formed on each side of the said Near one end' the base is provided with a comparatively largeopenin 10 having a tie-- PQH lng ange 11 011 1175 un erside provided adapted to fit an oppositely curved surface 13 in the end of a pipe 14. These surfaces when, placed together form in 'efiecta ball and socket 'oint and allow the pipe to be tilted up or own or to the side in httin it to the waste or soil ipe, so that the plumber in with a curved bearing surface 12' that is putting in the c os'et can easily adjust the" pipe to fit the connections without disturb- %gl the horizontal position of the base.
en the pipe has been fitted the bolts are tightened and the joint formed by the ball and socket will be rigid and immovable. The pipe 14. has a horizontal flange 15 around the surface 18, said flange having curved slots 16 therein and bolts 17 which pass through said slots and'into holes 18 in said base on each side of the openin 10 therein. The holes 18 are counter-sun to receive the heads of the bolts and the nuts are tightened, on the under side of the flange 15-to hold the base and pipe securely together after connection has been made with the waste pipe. \The slots 16 are of Sllffi".
cient length to allow the pipe to be revolved with respect to the base or'the base turned on the pipe to permitconvenient connection to the waste pipe regardless of its positionwith respect to the closet. This constructionwill be found very convenient as'it is often diflicult to make a satisfactory connection between the closet and the Waste pipe.
The ipe 14 has a vent 19 either right or left han and connections 20 and 21 for the tub and lavatory. The end of the pi e 14 that extends to the waste pipe is provi edwith a. series of annular grooves 22 so that the plumber can easily and. quickly adapt the pipe for the distance between the closet and waste pipe, sawing off the pipe in one of the grooves until the requisite length is ob tained. These bases are made of any suitable size and their shape may be varied without altering the character of my invention.
I claim as my invention: 1. The combination with a water-closet and a vertical waste pipe located at one side thereof, of a pipe connection havin an upwardl T turned elbow at one end an 'a horizonta portion at its other end, said elbow and horizontal portion being formed in one piece and said elbow end having a laterally extending flange provided with curved slots and bolts passing through said. -slots and per- 'mit'tin rotary or horizontal adjustment of u said el ow end and said horizontal portion go; I I $11,742!
and said eiioow end having a bell and socket I portion being formed in one bearing on the baseiof said Water-closet and the connections between said elbow end and said water-closet permitting the horizontal end ortion of said pipe connection to be tilte up or down or to one side or moved horizontally to adapt it to the position of the of said stmightpipe section to accommodate inlet 0 ening of said waste pipe whereby the said pipe to the position of the inlet opening ieco end said I I I I I I I I use of end bends and joints is avoided, subin sznd Waste pipe, substantially es'deselihed. I
I I I I I elbow end having; a intern 1y extendin flange and provided with ouwed slots {H15 boitsrpossing through said slots and into said base and permitting rotrirv movement ofsoid elbow and the holizontni adjustment 10 stantioiiy as described. In xxiiness hereof, I have hereunto set "h 2. The combination gifii n water-closet my hand this 30ih day of March 1907.
